On Sunday, July 24,local producers at theShepherdstownFarmer’s Market pre-sented the children’slibrarians at theShepherdstown PublicLibrary with a check for$150.
The donation was acontinuation of an edu-cational partnershipprogram that thefarmer’s market and thelibrary have participat-ed in since 2009. Thelibrary uses the moneyto purchase children’sbooks about agriculturaltopics.
Children’s librarianAnne Eden said that avariety of children’sbooks are purchasedwith the donationfunds.
“We buy fiction andnonfiction books forchildren on all different
age levels,” Eden said.“We have topics fromfarming, gardening,cooking, worms ... any-thing we can think ofthat would interestkids.”
The books aremarked with a book-plate that shows themonth and year theywere donated by theShepherdstownFarmer’s Market.
Children’s librarianKathleen Dawe attend-ed the donation eventon Sunday. Dawe saidthat she talked to bothchildren who would bereading the new booksand farmers at theevent.
Dawe said she wassurprised at the amountthat was donated thisyear. Last year $100 wasdonated.
“This year, unbe-knownst to me until Igot the check upstairs,they gave even more(than in 2010),” Dawe
said. “They gave us$150, which was verygenerous. It allows meto buy videos (in addi-tion to books).”
Dawe said that the
partnership between thefarmer’s market and thelibrary is similar to theRoots and Shoots pro-gram at ShepherdstownElementary School. Inthat program, classes atthe elementary schoolcare for gardens andlearn about seeds, gar-dening and farming.
Paul Elliott, the secre-tary of the
ShepherdstownFarmer’s Market, saidthat both the library andthe Roots and Shootsprogram receive dona-tions from the market.
“It’s always the firstthing brought up at ourmeetings — contribu-tions,” Elliott said.
Elliott said that boththe program at thelibrary and the Roots
and Shoots program areuseful because theyeducate children onhow to live sustainablyand be good stewards ofthe earth.
“It’s good for thekids it’s good for thecommunity,” Elliottsaid. “The kids get tosee where things comefrom and learn aboutagriculture.”
