Mother Cabrini Shrine You don’t need to be Catholic to appreci-

ate this national treasure on 800 acres. The extraordinary city and mountain views inspired Mother Francis Cabrini to establish a summer camp for orphans there from 1904 to 1912. She discovered a spring, which was later converted to a grotto modeled after the Great Shrine of Lourdes in 1929. Visitors enjoy beautiful mosaic art while climbing 373 steps to a 22-foot statue of Jesus Christ installed at the summit in 1954. Mass is held daily at the chapel above an excellent gift shop. 20189 Cabrini Blvd. (off Hwy 40 between I-70 exits 259 and 256) • 303-526-0758 • www.MotherCabriniShrine.org

Lariat Trail Scenic Drive from Lookout Mountain down to Golden

The historic Lariat Trail drops down 1,800 feet altitude over 56 curves from Buffalo Bill’s Grave to 19th Street in Golden. The 4.5 mile road was built by hand and horse from 1911 to 1914. Golden booster William “Cement Bill” Williams created this magical drive to keep Denver from bypassing Golden for a route to the Denver Mountain Park system. The road gained international fame when 25,000 people walked, drove, or rode by horseback up to attend Buffalo Bill’s funeral on June 3, 1917. In 2012, it is the most popular cycling experi-ence in JeffCo; hikers access the historic Beaver Brook Trail; paragliders launch off Mount Zion where Mines students maintain the lighted “M.” Tourists and locals appreciate this extraordinary scenic treasure, which engineers from around the world visit with awe. All of the Lookout Mountain area is Golden 80401. www.citymtnviews.com/historic/lariat/index.htm

Historic GoldenThis charming town was the Provisional Territorial Capitol of Col-

orado in 1859 and first Capitol in 1861 until Denver took it in 1867. Golden became a municipality in 1870, before statehood in 1876. Res-idents love their walkable town with historic neighborhoods, unique shops, restaurants and a won-derful Clear Creek side trail. The Chamber of Commerce is 93 years old and wins national awards for the best volunteers. The city boundaries are within 12 square miles, but zip codes 80401 and 80403 serve 200 square miles of unincorporated “Greater Golden.” This small town of 18,000 residents welcome visitors at five museums, Colorado School of Mines and American Mountaineering Center. 303-279-3113 • www.GoldenCoChamber.org • www.Golden.com • www.GoldenCulturalAlliance.org

Clear Creek History ParkGolden volunteers convinced city council in the 1990s to cre-

ate Clear Creek History Park for visitors to discover how pioneers settled a bustling town that served as a government center and mining supply. Jef-fCo Open Space grants helped move and restore historic structures from Coal Creek and Golden Gate Canyons. The 3.5 city-owned acres include 1870s homestead cabins, one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, root cellar, outhouse, heir-loom gardens and real live chickens! 1020 11th Street, Golden 80401 • www.GoldenHistoryMuseums.org

Astor House Museum This was a hotel for Colorado’s first Territorial legislators built in

1867. It then served as a boarding house for more than 100 years. When the city threatened to demolish it in 1972, Golden citizens voted to require the city to preserve and maintain it. Today’s visitors can imagine legislators discussing statehood, miners seeking their fortune and immigrants adapting to a new life. Golden History MuseumWith the help of the WPA and the Daughters of the American Rev-

olution, Jefferson county and the city of Golden, this museum began in the 1930s with historical artifacts, which were moved many times until the City of Golden acquired an old pub-lic library for the museum. Funded by the city and Golden Civic Foundation, the Golden Pioneer Museum is managed by the city. 923 10th Street • 303-278-7151 • www.GoldenHistoryMuseum.org

Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum

Teacher and minister Arthur Lakes explored dinosaurs and put together a mineral cabinet in 1874. Today, the three-story museum has more than 50,000 minerals, fossils, gemstones and historic min-ing artifacts. It also displays moon rocks collected during the Apollo mission. The collection inspires appreciation of the earth’s mineral, fossil, meteorite and treasures. It is within the Colorado School of Mines campus. 1310 Maple St • 303-273-3823 www.mines.edu/Geology_Museum

FirstBank Locally Owned & Managedwww.efirstbank.com 1-800-964-3444

FirstBank started in Jefferson County in 1963 and continues to have a positive impact in banking and in the community. They offer a local 24-hour telephone service where you can speak to a real human being. This second largest bank in Colorado has over $11 billion in assets and contributes millions to charitable organizations.

Employee-owned FirstBank treasures superior customer service AND a sense of humor! Remember the 2012 Super Bowl TV commercial? A well-dressed man sitting in a recliner says, “At FirstBank, customer service is our priority. So if you’re a First-Bank customer worried about missing one of the exciting commercials during game time, now would be a great time to go to the bathroom…….seriously”. He keeps sitting there quietly for the rest of the commercial!

Another TV commercial begins with a guy at a fast food restaurant who orders water but starts putting soda in a water cup. He is accused of being a “Soda Thief” and is asked to leave the building by management. At the end of the spot the narrator says “Save Smarter. Get eSave, the account that helps you save automatically.”

TDA in Boulder is the advertising agency of record and continues to develop catchy headlines:• “Free checking still exits. You just gotta .... know where to find it.”• “Our Free Checking is still free. Their’s .... not so much.”• “Would you prefer great service or great .. rates? How about both?” • “Our mortgages are straightforward, to ... the point and without superfluous words and jargon that have no reason for being .. there except to confuse you and sneak ...... something in, banana, that you might not notice.”

These friendly customer service values were founded in Lakewood in 1963 and to this day, all bank managers have glass-wall offices to keep them connected with custom-ers. FirstBank has grown through consumer and commercial lending, innovative banking products and services. It now has 129 locations: Colorado (114), Arizona (10), and California (5). FirstBanks in Jefferson County are located at Arvada, Conifer, Edgewater, Evergreen, Golden, Lakewood, Littleton and Wheat Ridge.

Some of the most charitable organizations to benefit from FirstBank’s generosity are the Action Center, Jefferson Center for Mental Health, JeffCo Library Foundation, Food Bank of the Rockies, Habitat for Humanity, JeffCo Housing Authority and Casa of Jefferson and Gilpin Counties.

FirstBank President of the Lakewood market Buddy Douglass says, “FirstBank began operations in a trailer off West Colfax Avenue in Lakewood and our employees always remember that. We continue to thank the community that got us started by launching Colorado Gives Day, a one-day online fundraising initiative to increase philanthropy in Colorado.” FirstBank’s contributions helped raise over $8 million in 2010 and over $12 million in 2011 to benefit more than a thousand Colorado nonprofit organizations.

FirstBank keeps growing through consumer and commercial lending, innovative banking products and services and high regard for community reinvestment. After 49 years, FirstBank’s commitment to customers and communities has not changed.

Jefferson County Economic Development CorporationJCED’s mission is to strengthen the eco-

nomic vitality of Jefferson County through the creation, retention and expansion of primary jobs. JeffCo ED is a unified single voice for business driving the economy for-ward and opening the future for economic opportunity in Jefferson County. The organi-zation was created in 1955 as “Industries for Jefferson County, Inc.” as the first economic development organization in Colorado.

It was organized by business and community leaders to help attract the Glenn L. Martin, Co., which expanded to become Lockheed Martin. During the 1960s, the organization helped establish the Jefferson County Airport (now Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport), Terumo BCT, Ball Corporation Container Division and Red Rocks Community College.

It became known in the 1980s as Jefferson Economic Council. In 1985, JCED’s first advanced “business incubator” in the metro area helped establish Denver West Office Park. During the 1990s, JCED was involved with relocation and/or expansion of Boston Market, Bolder Technologies, Star Guide, Balzers, Hydra Trucking, Pilatus Aircraft, Ball Aerospace and Lockheed Martin Astro-nautics.

Under the guidance of Tom Clark (1997-2003), demographic information and promo-tion on the Internet and in print began to attract more high tech investors and govern-ment services for aerospace, aviation, biosci-ence and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. In 2010, JCED became better known as a single voice for the Jefferson County business community negotiating opportunities at the local, county, state and

national levels. To explore more, go to www.JeffcoEDC.org 303-202-2965

In 2011, JEC was rebranded and became the Jefferson County Economic Develop-ment Corporation. The current President and CEO is former JeffCo Assessor and JeffCo Commissioner Kevin McCasky. JeffCo Mediation Services — FREE!

One guy allows his barking dogs to run wild in the neighborhood. Another pollutes the entire community with diesel fumes warming up his truck for an hour every morning. Bullying is on the rise in most public schools. And then there’s that snowplow that destroyed a mailbox. Calling the police or litigation may be the most expen-sive, time consuming, and least effective way to resolve conflicts. A much more effective way to solve problems is to ask for resolution with JeffCo mediation services. A paid staff of five and 250 volunteer mediators provide the service free of charge and there is a waiting list for more volunteers!

Originally formed in 1994, JCMS has grown to handle small neigh-borhood disputes and very large ones, such as land use or mineral rights conflicts. Director Mark Loye’s resume includes degrees from Stanford, Cornell and DU. He says, “The big matters are important; but the matters that involve the safety and comfort of your own home are huge. Those disputes happen every single day and involve just about everyone at some time.”

JCMS managed 1,570 cases in 2010 and 1,740 cases in 2011—an 11 percent increase! Jefferson County and courts have avoided mil-lions of dollars in costs! Mediation is immensely cost effective versus hiring a lawyer and going to court and it is the only county service of its kind available in Colorado. It saves taxpayer dollars and helps resolve conflicts between people. “Why? Because it works,” says Loye. “We’re impartial, confidential, and best of all, FREE to every JeffCo citizen.” JCMS has an astounding 90% success rate in resolv-ing neighborhood conflicts! This is a “better way to solve conflicts.”

By January 2012, a total of 760 mediators had contributed 55,093 hours for the benefit of JeffCo citizens. The savings from lawyer fees, court costs, and paid mediators amounts to $4,407,440 since 1994. The most significant increase in mediation services is for divorce and child care. During 2011, qualified volunteers donated 5,291 hours saving JeffCo citizens $964,200! 700 Jefferson County Parkway, Suite 220 • 303-271-5060Group Photo: Left to rightLarry Cerrillo, Volunteer Mediator and JCMS Advisory Group MemberRachel Baumel, Volunteer Mediator and JCMS Advisory Group MemberMark Loye, JCMS DirectorJulie Carter, JCMS Deputy DirectorBrian Beck, JCMS Systems ManagerRobyn McDonald, Volunteer Mediator and JCMS Advisory Group MemberNot pictured: Helena Goldstein, JCMS Programs Manager

How to Live a Life of Adventureby Frosty Wooldridge www.HowToLiveALifeOfAdventure.com 361 pages, $19.95 at selected area booksellers.

When journalist, author, traveler and en-vironmentalist Frosty Wooldridge presumes to instruct others on the life well lived, persons of aspiration would do well to listen. After all, having bicycled more than 100,000 miles across six continents, faced down Class 5 rapids, explored the crystal mysteries beneath Antarctica and conquered many of the world’s highest mountains, Wooldridge knows whereof he speaks.

He has compiled a comprehensive handbook for the onward-and-upward set precisely explaining how to identify your personal brass ring, how best to reach for it, and proven tactics for seizing it firmly with both hands. The pace is brisk, the writing inspirational, the scope at once focused and universal.

Drawing on a quarter century of experi-ence, Wooldridge’s step-by-step guide offers essential tips for successful trips, everything from funding your foray, to the importance of getting a nod from your dentist before setting out, to necessary considerations when answering Nature’s call in her least-traveled districts. Also included are destina-tion recommendations, meticulous lists of essential equipment and suggested reading, and a generous seasoning of the fascinating people and places Wooldridge has encoun-tered in his travels.

He makes it clear at the outset that true adventure is as much attitude as altitude, more motive than motion. Wooldridge says. “You define your own adventure style and you pursue it at your chosen speed through-out your life.

The Legacy of Arthur Lakesby Katherine K. Honda and Beth Simmons 194 pages; $45 at Dinosaur Ridge Visitors Center

Students of Colorado School of Mines may be acquainted with the library that bears his name, but now they know about JeffCo’s original Arthur Lakes! To their great and lasting credit, Auraria librarian and scholar Katherine K. Honda and geologist-turned-historian Professor Beth Simmons teamed up with Friends of Dinosaur Ridge to offer a wonderfully personal introduction to one of the most significant figures ever to set boot and trowel on the county’s history-rich soil.

Like many educated men of the Victorian Era, Arthur Lakes wore many hats – minis-ter, teacher, geologist, author, artist – but the inquisitive Englishman who arrived in Colo-rado in 1867 would leave his most enduring mark by discovering fossilized dinosaur

bones on the Hogback near Morrison. This is a story of a amazing man’s remarkable life.

Besides drawing on the words and wisdom of many of Lakes’ most ardent local admirers, the authors include a CD/ROM brimming with Lakes’ own surpris-ingly lyrical prose, and fill page after page with images of the Rocky Mountain West as recorded long ago by his deft pen and paintbrush.

It would be faint praise, indeed, to call “The Legacy of Arthur Lakes” an extraor-dinary achievement. Seldom has a single volume so thoroughly filled such a grievous void in local annals, or done so in a manner more colorful, complete, or accessible.

Feet Upon the Earthby Louise Mitchell, published at www.AuthorHouse.com $15.79

There are many ways to reach enlighten-ment. This journal of the author’s spiritual journey into her past lives can inspire the reader toward healing fear and pain within. Mitchell courageously records her healing experiences with spirit guides while recall-ing former lives. Her “sacred path” exposes sub-personalities that hold deep-seated an-ger, fear, guilt, and potential for personality disorders. She explores healing from harm-ful experiences while a Native American, a citizen of Lemuria and Atlantis, and other former lives. Her Spirit Guides are George, animals, angels and a combination of Christ, Buddha and other Ascended Masters.

This journey can inspire authentic mul-tidimensional experiences and/or amaz-ing imagination and/or healing through practicing meditation. Mitchell speaks in a poetic and metaphoric language calling the reader to inner exploration. She discovered: “Do not hold on to all of life’s experiences. Learn from them and hold onto the wis-dom and joy you gain. Let the experiences go. Feed your highest potential and push yourself up through the muck to the highest essence you can reach. See through the outer facade to the true value of your incarnation and make your life a joy of accomplish-ments that sets you free.” See her website: www.LaughingWatersWay.com

Edward Kosinski He grew up in Arvada and worked for Meininger Fine Arts store and in the graphics department for the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News. He studied art in Boulder and Boston and sold his paintings and connect-the-dots drawings at the People’s Fair. His true call-ing was to focus on diverse expressions of spirituality in the world. Using bright, luminous colors in acrylics and oil pastels, he crafts images that connect viewers with Spirit.Edward, who also does Pranic (energy) Healing, says: “Painting for me is a meditative, collaborative effort. It is like having a conversa-tion that begins when the first marks are put on the canvas. I listen for cues that intuitively guide me. At the journey’s end, I feel I have ‘co-created’ a painting.”His paintings have been exhibited regionally and nationally and are currently available at the Creator Mundi Gallery of Sacred Art in Cherry Creek North and The Denver Art Gallery on East Colfax. www.edwardkosinski.com.
