We invite you to the 16th Annual Southern Invitational Choral Conference at Southern Miss to be held September 23 and 24, 2019. This year’s conference will feature clinicians Rollo Dilworth, Amon Eady and André Thomas.

Students will take part in intense rehearsals and high-quality performances, meeting fellow musicians from all over the Southeast. Also, at SICC, students have an opportunity to audition for choral scholarships at Southern Miss. Teachers can earn continuing education units (CEUs) by attending the various sessions. We are enthusiastic about meeting and working with you and your students. Please contact us with any questions.

Sincerely, Gregory Fuller, PhD, Director of Choral Activities The University of Southern Mississippi 601.266.4092 | [email protected]

HIGH SCHOOL CL INICIAN

Rollo Dilworth is vice dean, professor of choral music education, and chair of the Department of Music Education and Therapy at Temple University’s Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts in Philadelphia, Pa. He has served on the faculty since 2009. Prior to his position with Boyer College, he taught music education and was the director of choral activities for 13 years at North Park University in Chicago, where he prepared and conducted numerous extended and choral-orchestral works. Before teaching at the college level, Dilworth also taught choral and general music at the middle school level in his hometown of St. Louis, Mo. Over 200 of Dilworth’s choral compositions and arrangements have been published, and many are part of the  Henry Leck Creating Artistry Choral Series  with the Hal Leonard Corporation. He is also an established author and contributor for the  Essential Elements for Choir and the Experiencing Choral Music textbook series. He has authored three books of choral warm-up exercises intended for elementary and secondary choral ensembles, titled  Choir Builders: Fundamental Vocal Techniques for General and Classroom Use  (2006);  Choir Builders for Growing Voices  (2009);  Choir Builders for Growing Voices 2 (2014); and Music of Our Roots (2016). In addition, Dilworth has conducted 56 all-state choirs ranging across various levels, six regional honor choirs, and five national honor choirs. He is an active life member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). He also holds memberships with several other organizations, including Chorus America, the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM) and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).  CLIN

AMON EADYCOMMUNITY COLLEGE CL INICIAN

Amon Eady serves as the director of choral activities at Central Michigan University, where he conducts four ensembles and teaches undergraduate and graduate choral conducting and choral literature. Before arriving at Central Michigan University, Dr. Eady taught both middle school and high school in the White Station community of Memphis, Tenn., where he was named Music Educator of the Year by the Tennessee Music Educators Association in the spring of 2014. Dr. Eady’s choirs have performed all over the United States and the world, including multiple performances at state and regional conventions of the American Choral Directors Association. Dr. Eady remains active as a clinician, guest conductor and presenter. In the 2018-19 school year alone, he appeared as a guest clinician or conductor in Florida, Texas, New Hampshire and Michigan. He has also presented at state, regional and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education, as well as state conferences in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Michigan. These research areas include developing the male chorus, the building of a comprehensive choral program, new and diverse methods of teacher training, and the conductor’s role in maintaining student mental health. Dr. Eady holds the Bachelor of Music Education degree and Master of Music degree from The University of Southern Mississippi, as well as the Doctor of Philosophy degree in choral conducting and music education from Florida State University.

STUDENT SELECTION PROCESS Each high school is invited to bring two or three balanced SATB quartets to participate in the honor choir. Community colleges are invited to bring three or four balanced SATB quartets for the community college honor choir. Students must be excellent sight-readers, have good vocal technique, and display exemplary rehearsal behavior. If possible, priority should be given to students who will continue to sing in college. Please limit selection to those students who read music well and work hard in rehearsal.

If you have a need to bring a group that is not balanced with voice parts, permission must be sought from Dr. Gregory Fuller ([email protected]).

SCHOLARSHIP AUDITION At SICC, students have the opportunity to earn choral scholarships to The University of Southern Mississippi for the 2019-20 academic year. Auditions are open to all high school seniors and community college students who attend SICC. Students planning to be music majors should prepare two songs—one of a fine art (or classical) nature and one from any style. Those planning on being music minors, or who do not plan on majoring in music at all, should prepare one piece of a fine art (or classical) nature. An accompanist will be provided.

FAQ STUDENT ATTIRE School-appropriate clothing should be worn for all rehearsals, and the SICC T-shirt and jeans, or khakis, should be worn for the concert (no shorts for performance).

REHEARSALS To help us make SICC a successful conference, we ask that any deviation from the schedule be cleared with Dr. Fuller. It is important that all conference attendees help our productivity by being present and keeping distractions at a minimum. Please consult with us before allowing any student to arrive late or depart early from any rehearsal or event. PARKING PASSES Parking passes will be available prior to SICC on the web at usm.edu/choirs.

CEUs CEUs are not included in the teacher registration fee but are available at an additional cost. Teachers must attend all CEU sessions in order to receive their credits.

STUDENTS BEST SUITED FOR THE SICC EXPERIENCE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALITIES IN THIS ORDER:strong work ethic, musicianship skills (sight-reading) and choral singing experience.

Page 8: CHORAL ACTIVITIES SOUTHERN MIS · and Performing the Negro Spiritual , has quickly become a major source in this area of study. The African Diaspora Sacred Music honored Dr. Thomas

When making your reservations, please use the conference code SICC to receive special rates. Remember that most of the rooms have two double beds and can accommodate four students, which brings the total cost of lodging to around $18-$22 per student, per night. Make sure to specify if you want double/double rooms or kings. Monday night is the only required night; however, some schools may want to arrive Sunday evening.
