MechanicalweeD control

In contrast to chemical weed control the mechanical approach does not only control weeds,but also achieves excellent results in soil aeration, nitrogen mobilization, regulation of thewater balance etc.

To be successful in the long term, however, basic agronomic considerations in all aspects ofcrop production must be made:

• Efficient primary tillage builds the basis for successful mechanical weed control.

• Seeding depth has an indirect influence on successful mechanical weed control.Blind combing enables you to destroy a big amount of weeds, whereby the best resultis achieved when the weeds are in the germinating stage. This operation shall not harmthe germinating seeds. Blind combing with the Einböck AEROSTAR between seedingand germination of the crop is only possible with an increased seeding depth.

• The crop rotation should involve a wide variety of different crops. Proper crop rotationcan help to prevent the massive appearance of problem weeds.

• Adapted nitrogen supply: excessive use of nitrogen-based fertiliser leads to a highamount of problem weeds.

• Seedbed preparation constitutes an essential precondition for the success ofmechanical weed control. Good soil maturity and seedbed preparation at the earliestpossible moment are prerequisites for any mechanical weed control. Einböck offers alarge variety of machinery for seedbed preparation.

– these are the row crop cultivators withstar-like discs. These cultivators are mainly used in light soils. Thismachine is mainly used by clients who want to use it on a variety ofcrops like potato, vegetable, maize, etc.

Depending on the weeding width the machine is equipped with avariable number of hoe-stars. Height adjustable pre-loosening tines infront of the stars support the work for the following stars.

For a bigger row spacing or weeding width two pre-loosening tinesare used. As the stars can be pivoted horizontally and vertically, thesoil flow can be directed towards or away from the crop, just as smallhills can be maintained. Upon request the machine can be equippedwith crop deflector plates or hill-weeders. In case you want to usethe ROLLSTAR as a front mounted implement you need a special frontmounting support, which is available upon request.

– this is what Einböckcalls ridgers for hill-crops with large, concavediscs. These machines are used to push soil up inhill-crops. A pre-loosening tine breaks up the soiland the inclined discs transport the earth, pulleddown by erosion, up the hill again.

Due to the large smooth discs no hair roots of thecrop close to the surface are harmed. The discshave high quality, maintenance free bearings andcan be ideally adjusted in the angle. The optionalguided hill-weeder (3 sections) additionally fightsweeds.

– these are the cultivators equipped with spring tines. These cultivators are mainly used inmedium to heavy soil and only for a particular crop, e.g. beet or maize. Depending on the desired working depth the tinesand sweeps can differ.

For row spacing larger than 60 cm shares and tines for greater working depths are offered. For narrow row spacing height-adjustable tines equipped with shallow working sweeps are offered. The number of tines and the width of sweeps per hoeelement depend on row distance and weeding width. Furthermore, crop deflector plates or discs to protect the small plantsin the first weeding operation are available.

On the CHOPSTAR you can turn the hoeing element by 180°. This allows you to convert a rear-mounted machine quickly toa front mounted one. Front mounted machines push the parallelograms, what results in a short construction of the rowcrop cultivator.

On the hoeing-elements a lot of different options like hilling elements, hilling sweeps, weeder tines, finger-hoes, etc. canbe mounted.

Upper-link steering for exact weedingeven in hilly terrain and in curves.

High-gauge wheels provide an optimalguidance of the row crop cultivator.The front wheels of the tractor are notreleased from weight.

Lower links guided on both sides providehigher stability.

With the hydraulic steering support thesteering action of the upper link steeringis increased. At the headland the cylinderalways has to be switched to the otherdirection. It is recommended for slopesover 6 %.

The working depth of the hoe elementcan be adjusted through the spindle ofthe Farmflex feeler wheel. Via the tensionspring and the adjustment bracket thedownforce of the parallelogram can beadjusted.

Due to agronomical, organisational or commercial reasonsmainly herbicides were used to keep weeds in check inthe past. This chemical weed control reduced costs andefforts while at the same time it helped to increase profitsand to stabilise crop yield. This resulted in the fact thattypical “cultivation crops” have turned into “spray crops”.Lately, also because of the significant disadvantages ofchemical weed control, an increased interest inmechanical weed control can be realised.The following reasons are basis for this trend:

• The appearance of difficult to control weeds that havepartially become resistant against certain groups ofpesticides

• A ban on a number of pesticides

• A drastic price increase of pesticides

• The general focus on environmental care

• The tolerance of an acceptable amount of weeds in thefield

• Improved machine range: upper-link steering for rearmounted machines, camera steering systemROW-GUARD

Mechanical weed control also has positive aspectson the soil:

• Increased aeration

• Disruption of the capillary action

• Breaking of crusts

• Conservation of soil nutrients that are often destroyedor displaced by chemical releases

Depending on the number of rows, rear- mounted machines are equipped with an automatic upper-link steering.

It allows operation on slopes up to 6 %. Also in curves the cultivator will exactly follow the tractor. Since the steering is done viahigh gauge-wheels there is no need for the tractor to carry the machine. It is operated with activated automatic hitch controland freely movable lower links (approx. 7 cm each side). This ensures that the front wheels of the tractor are not released fromweighted, which gives a better manoeuvrability, especially in hilly terrain.

Because the front-view to the crops is often restricted, front mountedmachines are standard equipped with a track indicator.

Adjustable weeder tines for CHOPSTAR 25-59 cm andCHOPSTAR 60-90 cm: the outer tines on each element canbe exchanged, in order to push soil away from or towardsthe row.

This hilling element can bemounted instead of the rear tine ofthe CHOPSTAR 60-90 cm to maintainpotato hills.

Angle knives areavailable on request.

Depending on the row spacing the vibrotines are offeredwith 120 mm to 300 mm wide duckfoot sweeps.

The finger-hoe discs allow to work in betweenthe plants in the crop row. For the front versionadditional support wheels are required.

Heaping shares are used for hilling up the plantrows. They can be mounted on the holder of thevibrotine as well as on the S-tine.

PRECISION CAMERA STEERINGeXactly in Between the rows

The camera steering system ROW-GUARD guides hoes absolutely precisely, even in high speed. Via a controlunit in the tractor’s cabin the precision guidance system can be adjusted very comfortably. The picture thecamera captures is being analyzed on spots with a high concentration of green pixel. With help of the availableinformation about row-configuration of the crop (row spacing, number of rows, etc.) a raster is put on top ofthe picture. This data builds the basis for the information provided to the sideshift frame which guides the hoeexactly in between the rows.

All the advantages of the ROW-GUARD system are obvious:

- improved working accuracy- working of the full area in combination with a finger weeder and- extremely efficient weed control.

Extremely high working speed (up to 15 km/h, depending on field conditions)are possible.

The operator does not get tired so quickly, the required concentration is limitedto stay in between the rows – the exact steering is done by the ROW-GUARDsteering system.

The system can be used in various different green crops, independently fromrow spacing, number of rows, etc.

The seeding roller is driven by a bigground wheel and therefore thedistribution rate is always adjusted tothe working speed.

The quantity regulation is done stepless via a lever.

The two with the machine supplied seeding rollers allow distribution ofnearly every seed or fertilizer (independent from the size).

The hydraulic fan produces the necessary airstream to transport the fertilizer or the seeds from the seedingunit to the rear mounted distribution heads and further on to the outlets.

From a transport distance of the seeds of 10 m the optionally available rotary airlock ensures that the airstreamdoes not escape via the seeding unit and that the necessary air pressure is available.
