ABOUT THE PIANIST

Pierre Maréchaux is a professor of Latin and neo-Latin literature at the University of Nantes. The scope of his research is devoted to mythography and hermeneutics. He got scholarships at the Warburg Institute in London and Laval University in Quebec, where he was Frances Yates Fellow and Scholar in Residence. Lecturer at the University of Reims and the Centre for Advanced Studies of the Renaissance in Tours, he worked on ancient literature publishing translations and commentaries of Aristotle, Plutarch, John Chrysostom , Lucian, Horace, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius... or essays on Petrarch and Ovid, Boccaccio, or the Greek myths. He wrote 24 books. He became junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France and full professor at Nantes; he focused his research on musical hermeneutics and dialectic of the commentaries. Having been seven years a disciple of Claudio Arrau, he won some international piano competitions in Paris, Leeds, Cleveland... His familiarity with musical repertoire allowed him to extend his intelectual field to musical rhetoric or history of interpretation. He gave concerts in France, Germany, USA, Canada, Italy, UK, Spain and Turkey. He gave "concerts-lectures" in Villa Medicis of Roma, Berkeley University, London University, Milano University, etc. P.M. won recently the Prize of Academy Charles Cros for his book on the Hungarian composer György Kurtág. He recorded several CDs devoted to Schumann, Ravel, Liszt and Nietzsche. He is now editing a translation of Opera omnia of Procopius of Gaza for the editions Belles Lettres (Collection of the Universities of France) and an illustrated essay on "bodybuilding from antiquity to modern times.”
