• Fewer people smoke now than ever before

• Every week, lots of people in Salford give up smoking through the Stop Smoking Service or on their own

• The health benefits of giving up smoking are felt at any age

• It’s never too late to give up smoking

Obesity• As a nation, we are larger than ever before• 23% of the population are classed as obese• In Salford, 30,000 adults are obese• 140,000 adults are overweight• Cause: diabetes, heart disease, some cancers• Obesity robs us of a decade of life

• Many children will die before their parents

• Now on the national agenda as a key issue• Locally – we are taking this seriously• Strategy being developed to tackle the issue• Food and physical activity workers have

joined together to form the Food and Physical Activity Partnership

• Still a huge public health issue• Rates going up every year

• The amount of energy we expend (‘Energy out’) has gone down

• We don’t do enough exercise to burn the calories off
