"Basically we didn't really know how Second Life would shape up. And we were afraid that without understanding how people would behave better we might be better off separating teens from others. And I looked at Whyville, and it seemed like they had a cool idea... and a proof that this worked pretty well."

Philip RosedaleMarch, 2007, Global Kids Island

Teen Spotlight: Malarthi Behemoth • First TSL resident (by five minutes)• Has kept his original in-world home a pristine forest reserve

with one lone dog house• "The big bright (literally) dog that took that first small step

for teens, first huge step for mankind."• In His Own Words: "My favorite experience was what we

called the "Race to the Bottom"… Basically, we were assigned a third world country to represent. And then we had to decide how much financial, legal, ethical and other kinds of incentives we were going to give to a large corporation that was considering moving it's labor to our country. The amazing part for me was when I realized that the name of the "game" wasn't random, it was directly related to what we were doing. I tried to get everyone to take a stand against the corporation, and it didn't work. And I realized that's the problem we face today."

Best Practices • What are two "best practices" from Camp GK you would recommend to

others interested in using virtual worlds for education and activism?• “Be prepared for things to go in directions you never even thought

possible. We were able to accomplish some pretty amazing things that we hadn't even considered at the outset of camp.” - Malarthi Behemoth

“Well I think that the one mic and popcorn system was good for allowing people to express their ideas freely when at times keeping it quiet when its needed.” - TheCoolLeader Boyer

“One of my favorite activities was the human barometer where the instructor would ask us questions and we the campers would jump on different signs on the ground that corresponds with our opinion on that issue/statement.” - Ryan Dayton

“I really enjoyed the fact that we could go around, tell our stories, and express our opinions. Let teenagers express who they are while in a learning environment; You guys let us be ourselves.” - Itokuzu Shimada

Reorganization • MacArthur Spotlight (http://spotlight.macfound.org)• Debate expands to adults and teen spaces (SLED, teen blogs, TSL boards,

etc.)• Email from GK to Lindens: "Blue said recently during his interview with

Philip on GK island, 'It could very well be that in the next year, island ownership by individuals as well as edu/non-profits like Gkids becomes the primary business model for TG.' I think that is correct. And this can mean more ADULTS owning land in the Teen Grid than teens. This is what leads teens like Cheesepuff to recently write, 'Stop calling it the teen grid, at this point, it doesn't really deserve that name. Call it the near everybody is homeless grid. Call it the being taken over by adults grid.' I think one approach for maintaining the youth-centric nature of the teen grid, while still allowing adults to own sims,... might be to go the route of making a clear physical delineation by making an adult section of the Teen Grid."

• Important because:– Reaffirms that Lindens Listen and that teen voices mattered– Demonstrated that public dialogs about civic issues could expand over

months across the net and have an impact– Cleared up a major obstacle to both the growth of educational projects

in TSL and the threat that poses to the grid

"... At a high level we don't even want to separate anyone from anyone. So now that we have more experience, we are thinking about how to also create the option to have everyone together. It would be great if there could be an area with all ages, but no mature content. And I think we can make that work. We have so much more experience now. I think that where we are today... a place for only teens... makes sense too. It is up to you."

Philip RosedaleMarch, 2007, Global Kids Island

Page 69: Choose Your Best Practices

"I've got a dream... What if most of what we thought of as "school" today... happened in here instead? If you look at how people are studying SL in developing countries... where schools are terrible... it could happen. And if it happens there, it could rapidly be a model for other countries. Imagine that."
