What do Fe y Vida’s seminars entail?

Seminars are opportunities for in-depth continuing education on im-portant topics related to pastoral juvenil. The seminars complement each other and are taught by faculty specialized in each subject.

What is the focus and meth-odology of the seminars?

The content and focus of each topic nourish the personal development of the participants. The active meth-odology, founded on techniques for adult education, promotes the un-derstanding and integration of the contents and the acquisition of skills that can be applied to their personal life, occupation, and ministry.

At what level are the seminars offered?

The seminars are suitable for eccle-sial ministers, advisers, and young adults who have several years of formation and ministerial experi-ence, or who have taken the Cer-tificate Program for Advisers and Leaders in Pastoral Juvenil. The content is at a university level, while the instruction is given at the high school level in order to make it more accessible to individuals without a higher academic education.

In what sense is this a bilin-gual seminar?

Spiritual process will be facilitated in Spanish; life project process will be in English. Participants need to be able to understand both languages, and they will be able to carry out their own reflections in their preferred language.

Training for Ecclesial Ministers and Young Adult Leaders with Advanced Formation:Expanding Horizons for Lay Ministry

A program that expands the participants’ vision, develops their adminis-trative sills, and strengthens their own spirituality as Church leaders in the United States.

Professors: Carlos Carrillo, MEd.; Carmen María Cervantes, EdD; Ken Johnson-Mondragón, D.Min. Candidate; Adriana Visoso Valverde

Background of the program

For those of us who were trained as ecclesial ministers in another coun-try, this program is the gateway to the structure and operations of the Catholic Church in the United States. —Jesús Ábrego, Director of Hispanic Ministry, Diocese of Beaumont

Objectives To offer theoretical knowledge and practical training for a transformational leader-

ship at the institutional level of the Catholic Church in the United States, which responds to the reality of the Hispanic people.

To nurture the lives of Hispanic leaders, both in the spiritual and psychological aspects, in such a way that they may envision themselves as Christians capable of revitalizing the Church through effective pastoral action, rooted in the Gospel and in Catholic Social Teaching.

To provide tools for the development and practice of lay eclesial ministry, in the spirit of the “Revised National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers.”

To conduct exercises for critical analysis, pastoral planning, conflict resolution, budgeting, directing pastoral processes, and other exercises to improve the ef-ficiency and effectiveness of ministry at the institutional level.

To share ministry experiences, ideals, and challenges, and create a network of peers in order to promote the professional status of Hispanic lay ecclesial minis-ters at the parish, diocesan, regional, and national levels.

Ideal candidates for this training

Priests, religious sisters and brothers, deacons or laity, at different levels of ministry in dioceses, parishes, and apostolic movements.

People over 21 years of age, who have demonstrated leadership at the institutional level, and have reached an intermediate or advanced level of pastoral and theological formation.

Directors or faculty in formation insti-tutes for Hispanic ministry, who would like to offer the program locally under a license granted by Instituto Fe y Vida.

Characteristics of the program revised by Instituto Fe y Vida

Keeps the general vision, ide-als, main objectives, and foun-dational subject matter of the original program.

Has updated content and pro-cesses that respond to today’s reality.

Includes the advances that the Church has made in the last decade, in particular those re-lated to lay ecclesial ministry.

This is a revised and updated version of a program developed by the National Catholic Council for Hispanic Ministry (NCCHM) entitled, “El poder es servir: Liderazgo latino para la Iglesia y la so-ciedad.” NCCHM offered three national pilot programs, with nearly 100 people graduated, in the late 1990s.

It was offered by the NCCHM in 2001 as a training of trainers program for seven Hispanic national and regional formation institutes. Some years later, the Mexican American Cultural Center

(MACC) offered the training to eight di-ocesan Hispanic formation institutes.

Instituto Fe y Vida is one of the in-stitutes initially certified to teach and adapt the program to its constituency. In 2002-2003, it offered the program during its Annual Summer Program, with a two-year format, and has of-fered several of its subjects in ad-vanced seminars.

Recently, Fe y Vida secured the rights to revise and update the pro-gram so that it responds to today’s reality, particularly in light of the “Re-vised National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers”, approved by The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2011. It has also obtained permission to offer the pro-gram as a training of trainers to other institutes, and license it so that they can offer it locally.

Who are “lay ecclesial ministers”?Lay ecclesial ministers are those who serve publicly within the structures of the Church—par-ishes, schools, diocesan offices, and other Catholic institutions—with the authorization of the bishop. They collaborate in a complementary way with the ordained ministers in the saving mission of Christ, thus their service presupposes considerable preparation, formation, and professional competency.

What are the Revised National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers? These Standards are a set of professional guidelines for lay ecclesial ministers, which in-clude the vision as well as the competencies required of them, in light of the document Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

Why is this training offered by Instituto Fe y Vida?Instituto Fe y Vida played a pivotal role—through the Accreditation and Certification Commis-sion of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM)—to ensure that people working in pastoral juvenil hispana at the parish or diocesan level may be certified. Certifica-tion requires advanced formation following the approach offered in this training. Since persons serving in other ministries may also benefit from this training, Fe y Vida designed the program for a broader audience.

I learned a great deal about the structure and organization of the Church, about the mission of the la-ity, and also about fundraising, all of which inspired me to pursue doctoral studies. —Rudy Vargas, IV, Field Con-sultant, Catholic School Advantage, University of Notre Dame.

Our team took the training togeth-er, and since then we have offered it three times. Several graduates serve as parish coordinators of Hispanic minis-try; others are directing programs, and all are guiding and forming leaders. I am very excited about this revised and updated program! —Estela Villagrán Manancero, Coordinator of Hispanic Ministry, Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
