Choice Board Summer 2020   

Grade 1  

  Math  Comprehension  STEM 

Power Standard: 

I can compose and decompose two-digit numbers using tens and ones. 

I can retell using beginning, middle, and end. 

Use tools and materials to design and build a device that uses light or sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance. 

Activity #1  

 

Students will go to Freckle and click on “Numbers Drill” for 20 mins.  

Students will go to Moby Max and click on Word Problems for 20 mins.  

Students will pick 3 to 5 items and hold them up to the window to find out if they are transparent or solid and let NO light through. 

Activity #2  

 

Students will record themselves being the “teacher” showing how to compose and decompose tens and ones using the following numbers. (46, 38, 94, 71, 14, 7)  

Students will record themselves retelling the beginning, middle, and end of a book of their choice. 

Students will grab a flashlight and create a shadow using their hands then trace their shadow on a piece of paper.  

Activity #3  

 

Use Crayons for 10’s and pennies for 1’s to make the following numbers: 48, 17, 88 & 29  

Read a book and retell to a family member the beginning, middle and end.  

Make a drum using these tools: toilet paper roll, 1 tissue & rubber band.  

Activity #4  

 

Draw using 10’s and 1’s on the Notes or Show me app the following numbers: 37, 51, 63 & 72 

Choose a math story from Epic to listen to or read,then record yourself retelling the beginning, middle and end. 

Make a song from the GarageBand app.

Art  CIRCLE MAGIC! Make a circle art using items around your home. STEPS: 1) find circle items around the house – coins, lids, canned food, soda caps or anything circular. Make sure and ask permission before you use something. 2) Get a piece of paper and draw a circle around your item.  3) Draw different size circles.  4) You can draw circle patterns, you can overlap your circles, you can make planets and moons. 5) Color in your circles with crayons, colored pencils. You can also shade your circles with a pencil some lighter or darker.  

 

Music  While watching the “Sweet Beats” video, participate in the call and response activity to create beats. Try it with a family member or sibling at home. After viewing the video, let your Music teacher or a family member know 3 things you learned. https://youtu.be/VTmk_ADNOgg 

PE  Each day be PHYSICALLY active for at least 60 minutes. This could be 1 block of 60 minutes or broken up into 2 or 3 blocks of time. Go to http://www.spnpe.com/CompassPE.html Find 2-3 Physical Activities that you enjoy doing and participate for 60 minutes each day.   

Create a “Daily Physical Activity Log” and write down your Physical Activities and the minutes you participated for each day. Keep this information in your “PE Portfolio”. You may also use any equipment that you may have at home. Activities can include: Jumping Rope, Fitness Workouts, Dance videos, Yoga, Basketball Dribbling Skills, etc.

Library  - Write fiction or nonfiction narratives and poems: . Tech Option: Create an acrostic poem in the Acrostic Poems App available in Self Service.

Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool. 

Activity #1  

1. 80+6= 2. 40+19= 3. 50+27= 4. 38+60= 5. 70+4= 6. 82+14= Solve problems using base ten blocks (draw straight lines for tens and small square for ones).. 

Text Feature Fill in the Blank. Use the picture your teacher posts in Google Classroom to fill in the blank. Use these words to fill in the blanks:diagram, index, chart, glossary, map, keyword. 

Social Distancing Communication: Using household items, create a way to communicate with a friend or family member while maintaining 6 feet of social distancing.  

Activity #2  10 25 44  Using the three numbers above how many ways can you make this number (for example, 5+5=10). Show at least four different ways to make each number. 

Make a diagram of your bedroom and add at least 5 labels. Take a picture and upload it to your Google Classroom.

Activity #3  

Go to Self service, download the Mental Math Card Challenge app, and complete the practice or timed 

  The electricity goes out in your house. What could you create to make light, besides a candle, in your house?

challenge. Spend at least 10 minutes on the app. 

Draw a picture of what you would create.  

Activity #4  

What is the sum of 20 and 32? What is the sum of 44 and 5? What is the sum of 71 and 7?  Use a strategy you have learned to solve the above problems.  

Family Book: Pretend you are going to write a nonfiction book about your family. Create a Table of Contents with the name of the chapters. Must have at least 4 chapters  

Draw a picture, or find materials at home to create your own game that you could play with someone at least 6 feet away.  

1st Grade Specials Activities 

 

Art  Personifying objects: Take a picture with your ipad of an ordinary object(fruit, vegetable, chair, bed, tv, etc).Then use a drawing app to draw on your picture to give it humanistic features like, eyes, mouth, nose, arms, hair, etc) Remember to share through google classroom. 

Music  Using your own words, make up a song and sing it to your family. Ask your family what they like best about your song. 

Healthy Living  Do your daily stretches/warmups. Challenge a family member to do the most push ups in 30 seconds. Next challenge a family member to see who can do the most sit-up. Last, challenge a family member to a race. Keep track of how many situps and pushups you do and try to improve every day. 

Cultural Connection 

Describe cultural characteristics of your school and community: Celebrate Culture! . Share your own family celebrations, customs, or traditions through a timelapse video, photo, or short story.

I can use strategies to solve subtraction problems within 20.   

   Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem. *Animal Adaptations 

Activity #1  Using 20 small objects (cereal, coins, etc.) as manipulatives, solve the following equations:  10-6= 7-3= 9-8= 17-5= 12-10= 20-14= 20-20= 15-13=  

Identify Math nouns. A noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing. Read a book and record 10 nouns you find. Choose 2 nouns to write about using this sentence frame: ____ is a noun because ______. Record 10 words from the book that are not nouns. Choose 2 words from this list to write about using this sentence frame: _____ is not a noun because ________. 

Find a book about an animal on Epic! Or Raz-Kids. After reading the book, draw and label the adaptations of the animal from your book. Send a picture of your drawing to your teacher.  

Activity #2  Solve the following problems using the picture strategy: 6-0= 3-2= 11-5= 12-12= 20-15= 15-5= 17-13= 19-14= 

Sort Math Vocabulary. A math noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing.  Then sort them. Make a column for person, place, and thing and record each noun where it belongs. Then write new sentences for 5 of the math nouns. Be sure to use punctuation at the end of your sentences.  

Go on a nature walk with an adult. Make a list of any animals you see. When you get home write about the adaptations for the animals you saw on your walk.  

Activity #3  Make a number line from 0-20. Using the number line, solve the following problems:  5-4= 9-7= 12-6= 10-1= 16-3= 11-10= 20-17= 14-5= . 

Choose an interesting picture from a photo album, internet, or a magazine. Label all of the nouns you can see in the picture. Then write 5 sentences about the picture using the nouns from the labels. Underline the nouns in your sentences. Be sure to use punctuation at the end of your sentences.. 

Think of one habitat you would want to visit. (arctic, desert, rainforest, savannah, forest, ocean, wetlands). Make a list and draw a picture of things you would need to adapt to live in that habitat/environment. Share this picture or list with your teacher!

Activity #4  

Challenge a family member to a subtraction math fight on the Math Fight app.   OR  Get on Tens Frame Mania and practice your subtraction skills.   OR  15 minutes on your favorite math app practicing your subtraction skills.  

  Pick an animal cam to study from this site. https://nationalzoo.si.edu/webcams Write about the animal you chose. Discuss the animals habitat and adaptations in your writing.  

1st Grade Specials Activities  

Art  Doodle Art- What shapes can you create when you doodle with lines? Use a pencil, crayons, or markers to draw some lines on paper and then fill in the shapes created with colors. 

 

Music  Play your favorite music and walk slowly when the music is slow and run fast when the music is fast. Next, find something you could use as a drum (oatmeal box, cereal box, etc.) and make a rhythm pattern of fast and slow sounds. Then, use body percussion (clap your hands,

stomp your feet, etc) and make another rhythm pattern of fast and slow sounds. The speed of the song or music is called Tempo.   

Healthy Living 

Grab your favorite toy and join me for a fun exercise!!  You will grab your favorite toy and set it on the floor, first you will jump over it 20 times, run around it 5 times then you will pick up your toy to help you do 20 sit ups, repeat this 5 times and record your time! 

Library  Apply a writing process to develop a text for audience and purpose. Signs of Summer are everywhere! Create a journal for the week recording what you see (flowers, weather, insects and animals). You can record your findings on paper or in the following apps on your iPad: Notes, Slides, Science Journal. Insert photos and videos to support your findings.

Listen to this story: https://youtu.be/21keh7LS8K8  Then create, color and label a map of the inside of your house. Include at least 3 rooms of your house. Write 3 sentences about your favorite room.  

Create a family tree. Draw/label your tree with yourself and different members of your family. Be creative with how you represent your family. Hacer un árbol familiar. Incluya a ti mismo y a los familiares. 

 

Library STEM challenge!   ETS1 - Engineering Design: Find items around the house that are no longer being used to create a kite. Enjoy testing your creation on the next windy day! Search and find something in your house that starts with each letter of the alphabet.  Then create either a photo collage on your i-pad, or you can draw pictures of the items you found.   Make sure your found items are labeled with their letter. 

Make a menu of three items and pretend you are a server in a restaurant. Ask your family to choose an item from your menu and help prepare the food. Serve your family as if you are a waiter/waitress, checking on them during the meal to see if they need anything else. Bon Appetit! 

  

Music ● Get a bottle of bubbles, blow them in the 

air and follow them with your voice. (If you don’t have bubbles, look on YouTube to find out how to make your own.)  

● When the bubble rises high in the air, raise your voice, too. 

● When the bubble begins to fall lower your voice.
