There is a broad range of natural sources of chitin. In order to guarantee a defined and reproducible chemical grade, Chitinor has decided to use only one species, Pandalus borealis, from Norwegian fishing areas for the manufacture of Chitopharm™. Itching is a phenomenon which can significantly restrict daily life. Causes include allergic reactions, neurodermatitis, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and dry skin. Usual treatments like products containing anti-histamine or corticoid agents, often have undesired side effects. Chitopharm™ offers a naural alternative by moisturizing the skin. The combination of improved wound healing and antimicro- bial activity makes Chitopharm™ particularly useful for biomedi-cal applications, such as wound healing gels and dressings, surgi-cal sutures and aids in cataract surgery and periodontal treatment. Chitopharm™ is used in pharmaceutical formulations to improve topical and oral drug delivery. Chitosan’s film forming abilities allows its application as matrix in topical delivery as well as a coating agent for solid dosage forms. Also encapsulation of drugs is possible. As cationic polymer Chitopharm™ is bioadhesive. Bioadhesivity is often used to enhance the residence time of a drug, thereby increasing the oral bioavailability. In ophthalmic gels Chitopharm™ increases precorneal drug residence time.

Chitosan, one of the few cationic biopolymers, is a derivative of chitin traditionally used in wound treatment.
