Chipping Campden

In the medieval period the Chipping Campden was a borough and the form of the medieval settlement, with parallel burgage plots, can still be recognised in the current layout. This distinctive plan form contributes to the character of the historic core of the settlement. On the eastern side of the settlement is the site of Campden House which is designated as a Scheduled Monument; the setting of this site will be an important consideration in planning development on the eastern side of the village. The Conservation Area includes a large number of important listed buildings.

The significance of the local historic environment should be highlighted in the strategy.

There is potential for currently unknown heritage assets due to the incomplete nature of the archaeological evaluation of the site.

5 Recent planning history

In July 2013 a pre-application consultation prompted a recommendation for assessment and evaluation.

The desk-based assessment (SW12340; HER45740) indicated potential for prehistoric and Roman remains. Geophysical survey (SW12341; HER45739) identified two curvilinear ground anomalies. Field evaluation has been recommended and is due to be undertaken in early 2014.

5 Recent planning history

In 2012 a pre-application consultation prompted desk-based assessment (SW11866; HER44358), and geophysical survey (SW12118; HER44789), and a planning application (13/02227/OUT) for residential development covering the majority of the allocation area prompted field evaluation. The results suggest some potential for later prehistoric activity, a report on the work has yet to be finalised. Planning permission was granted in November 2013 with a condition to secure archaeological recording.

4 Potential to include currently unknown heritage assets with archaeological interests

5 Recent planning history

In 2010 a pre-application enquiry prompted desk-based assessment (SW10113; HER35769), geophysical survey (SW11197; HER42432) and trial-trenching (SW11297; HER42764), revealing archaeological remains relating to an agricultural landscape of early – mid Anglo-Saxon date.

Subsequently there have been four planning applications for residential development. 11/05832/OUT was refused by the planning authority in March 2012 and refused subsequently at appeal in September 2012; 12/01434/OUT was refused by the planning authority in June 2012; 13/01538/OUT was refused by the planning authority in July 2013 but allowed on appeal in November 2013. A fourth application, 13/03030/OUT, was refused by the planning authority in September 2013.

In connection with each of the four applications a recommendation was made for a condition to be attached to any permission in order to secure archaeological excavation, and a condition to secure that work was attached to the permission for 13/01538/OUT when this was granted on appeal.
