Issue 299 June 2018 www.chipperfield.org.uk Chipperfield NEWS S t Paul’s complete Cup double with dramatic last minute winner! On Monday 23 April St Paul’s School played the schools primary district cup final at Hemel Hempstead School. The competition includes forty primary schools within Dacorum and the games spread between October and April. The school played eight group games, a quarter final, semi-final where they beat local rivals Bovingdon 2-1, and then the final against Broadfields School. Within ten minutes after kick off St Paul’s found themselves 2-0 down, but after composing themselves they started to play their usual pass and move football which resulted in levelling the score to 2-2 at half time. Second half was very close with both teams fully committed to defending and attacking, the deciding goal came with one minute to go and St Paul’s had their heads in front for the first time. So final score 3-2 to St Paul’s and a well deserved victory. This completed the double cup victory as the school’s football team had won the day tournament at Kings Langley school a few weeks earlier. A parent of the school, Mark Swales, took the training sessions and match days. A big thank you to Mark for committing his time to the team. Nick Fanshawe who is the school’s football leader added, “To win the double is quite some achievement for a school so small. We have gone through an entire campaign unbeaten, only drawing one game and winning the rest. A completely well deserved and fitting end to all their hard work". Special mention to Chipperfield Corinthians who allowed the school to use the pitch and facilities for home games; there is no doubt that the improved surface and size of the pitch helped the team throughout the season. Chipperfield Corinthians football club has two adult teams and the first team play in the Hertfordshire County league. It also has a rapidly expanding junior section with 8 football teams from ages 6 to 12. VOLUNTEERS CORNER

Terry Timberlake, chairman ofChipperfield Short Mat Bowls Club,

with his competition partner StewartGoldsmith won the Blackwell PairsTrophy in a closely fought final. Onwhat should have been the last game ofthe match the score was even, and so anextra end had to be played, which wasdecisive. The runners up were GrahamSkinner with Bill Taylor, who helpedmake the final a match to remember. The John Prestwich trophy, for the mostimproved player, was awarded this yearto David Hamberger, who is in fact aveteran member of the Club. An unusualchoice by the Club Committee but Davidin the past has had difficulty playingwell so decided to change his hand. After a short learning period David hasimproved remarkably. The trophies were awarded at the Club’s

annual end of season dinner, held thisyear at Boxmoor Lodge. The Chairman,as ever, entertained us with his speechand thanked the ladies who organize thecatering, Doreen Adair and AnneAtkins, together with Bill Taylor whomanages the Pairs competition. The Club plays from October to the endof April at the Village Hall and hasenjoyed a particularly good season withfull membership. We were fortunate inonly losing one evening, in March, tobad weather. Two additional inter-clubmatches were organized against KingsLangley and Leverstock Green. Many ofour members continue their bowlingoutside in the summer with other clubs, and so Club members can now lookforward to meeting up again at theVillage Hall, Chipperfield, in October.

ST PAUL’S AND HOLY CROSSAlthough I haven’t personally counted, I am told that there are 365 times in the Biblewhen we are told ‘fear not’. In theory this should leave us just one day every four yearswhen we need to really worry. But there seem to be lots of reasons to be afraid, thepolitical climate nationally and internationally appears increasingly unstable, citizenship increasingly uncertain. All of these fearful things are talked up, increasing our fearfulness. As we become morefearful and our fears more exaggerated we are less able to live in harmony with eachother, or have a sense of belonging; suspicion and alienation become the order of theday. There are forces afoot in the world hell-bent on feeding our fears, using them againstus, masking the innate goodness in the world, creating a hostile environment of mistrustof others, taking us down paths of separation and fragmentation rather than co-operation and integration. Fear As we look at the world around us, fear is like a distorting lens which dulls our senses, clouds our judgement, obscures truth. What is that? And it curbs our rejoicing, upsetting the rhythm of the dance. Fear reduces the human capacity for love…….for everything. Let’s just say that fear reduces human capacity. So what life do we want to choose for ourselves, for our children – fear or freedom?Fear induces us to circumscribe our actions in such a way as to provide an illusion ofsafety. Freedom takes courage, to be sure: and that’s a problem for most of us as it’soften pretty scary. But it leads to a life of abundance and love. Jesus’ intent was toprovide his disciples with the tools to live this abundant life of freedom - a life worthliving. It starts with love. In his own words Jesus reminds us that “perfect love drivesout fear”, even if it did lead to the cross. Michele.

OUR LADY MOTHER OF THE SAVIOUR RC CHURCHAs May concludes, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, of courseuniversally known as Trinity Sunday. While we contemplate the mysteriousness ofGod, it is a time when we turn into a different chapter in the liturgical year. SinceAdvent we have been largely engaged following the principal events in Jesus’ life. Nowwe take a more measured approach, and we are invited to pay more attention to worshipGod in the form of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, all three. While the emphasis of ourscripture readings will be on the ministry of Jesus, it is through the understanding of theTrinity that our Christian discipleship and love for fellow man will be boosted.Early in June there is another important feast underlining the legacy of God’s plan formankind’s redemption. On Maundy Thursday, perhaps overshadowed by the sombreevents of the final few days of Christ’s earthly presence, we celebrated the institutionof the Eucharist. In less gloomy times comes the day of The Body and Blood of Christ, always known as ‘Corpus Christi’. Of course, the Eucharistic service always takesplace under the shadow of the Cross, so whatever the time of year, it’s a memorial ofthe sacrificial love that was central to Christ’s mission on earth. Partaking in theEucharist invites us to place self-sacrificing love firmly in the centre of our Christianlives. So, in June we will welcome our youngsters to their next step of their growingunderstanding and participation in Christian faith. ‘First Holy Communion’ is a day ofcelebration, both spiritually and temporally, as they join their elders in the Eucharisticcommemoration. “May they always know the peace of Jesus, the light of His love, and the joy of His lifewithin them”.

Chipperfield once again hosted the

welcoming party for the Dulux Charity

Cycle Ride, known as the North London

Leg Buster, on Sunday 13 May.

Blackwell’s and St Paul’s School PTA

arranged flags and banners along the road

as well as a Family Fun-day for villagers

and supporters of the cyclists. Hundreds

of cyclists rode through the village on

their route around London raising money

for nationally known charities.

Our wonderful school came up trumps

with lots of stalls, including bottle

tombola, sweets in jazzy jars, cakes, hook

a duck and candyfloss.

The PTA has donated the money raised

towards some much needed interactive

whiteboards for the classrooms. Thank

you to everyone who supported us.

ANNUAL PARISH MEETINGForty five people as well as our councillorscame to the Annual Meeting in the ParishRoom; County Councillor Richard Robertswas also there, along with guest speakerGiles Meredith from CDA Herts, a topicalspeaker in view of likely developmentsalong Chapel Croft. After summaries of what the Council hasbeen doing since the last APM, Councillorspresented grant cheques totalling £9,100to support local organisations – junior andsenior football clubs, maintenance of thechurchyard, refurbishment of the VillageHall, the New Burial Ground Trust, andsmaller amounts to the Liz Holliday Fundand to support the Walks throughVictorian Chipperfield led by Mary Nobbseach year for year 6 pupils.Traffic; smiley face speed signs shouldappear late summer on the Tower Hill andBucks Hill approaches to the village; HCCare surveying final positions for suitability.Garden Scene; Councillors updated themeeting on the proposed developmentwith single and multi-bedroom housing inChapel Croft. We hope that there will bean insert including architects’ drawingswith this edition of Chipperfield News.(There is more information from theCouncil on page 2 of this edition). The Land Rover Garage; sales andservicing are scheduled to move to newpremises in Aston Clinton after Christmas, but there are no firm proposals yet for theredevelopment of the site. A likely use isfor housing.Giles Meredith then spoke about the roleof the Herts Community DevelopmentAgency which supports villages in matterssuch as transport, housing, village hallsand community energy projects, spreading news of what works and whatdoesn’t. Interestingly, he said that theonly sites to have provided trulyaffordable housing are those where thelocal authority already owned the land;private developers have built very littlethat is truly affordable. In the Open Forum concern wasexpressed about parking opposite theTwo Brewers making it difficult forMoreen (the school crossing patrol) andfor traffic turning left from Bucks Hill.Others highlighted customer parkingoutside the Larder which makes it difficultfor traffic from Chapel Croft to see carsapproaching along The Street. The meeting ended with snacks and drinksand opportunities to chat with ourcouncillors. On behalf of our readersChipp News thanks the councillors, clerk, warden and ranger for the work that theydo to keep Chipperfield in good order.

CHIPPERFIELD AND THE GREAT WAR

The 3 June marks the centenary of thedeath from wounds, at the front, ofArthur Providence Bignell. Arthur wasborn at Pemans Green in 1884, but spentmost of his life in Belsize where he livedwith his widowed mother Mary. Aformer pupil of Chipperfield School heworked as a road mender prior to joiningup. In December 1916 he crossed toFrance and was a driver with the RoyalArtillery. On 3 June 1918 he wasseverely wounded when going to theguns while on duty and received a shellwound to the head. Arthur neverrecovered consciousness and his bodywas laid in Esquelbecq Cemetery nearDunkirk. Meanwhile on the home front Williamand Cissy Allen of CommonwoodHouse found themselves in trouble forfood hoarding. With the deterioration inthe food supply, controls on the hoardingof food came into effect in 1917, and inJanuary 1918 food rationing wasintroduced. Following a complaintreceived by the Watford Food ControlCommittee, their inspector spent fivehours conducting a search ofCommonwood House. He found largequantities of various food itemsdistributed around the 25 room house, including a bedroom. Mrs Allen said thatshe had originally stockpiled the foodfor fear of an invasion. Despiteprotestations that Mrs Allen hadreported the hoard to The Ministry ofFood the magistrates find William Allen£350 with £112 costs. This was reducedon appeal to £65 with £40 costs.

After a rathereventful start, in which the coach gotstuck in the mud outside school, theyhad a fantastic few days – the wonderfulweather made all the difference. Theyparticipated in a range of activities, including: Abseiling, Leap of Faith(where they had to climb a pole, jumpand catch a trapeze), Go-Karting, PoolParty, Laser, Orienteering, Boulderingand Obstacle Challenge. It waswonderful to see the children progressand grow in so many ways, taking onpersonal challenges, developingindependence, work as a team and mostimportantly, having fun!FundraisingWe have had some response to ourfundraising request for newwhiteboards, including a couple ofparents and an extremely generousvillager – thank you. Chipperfield NEWS June 2018, Page 11

I love the changing seasons; I have alwaysthought it would be boring if it were sunnyevery day. My favourite time of year isearly spring, the joy of finding the firstprimrose in bloom, the freshness of newgreen grass. What could be better?Primroses are probably my favouriteflowers; as a child we used to go and pickthem. I know better now. I got quitedisheartened when they began to diminishin The Wings, the woodland that my fathergave me. 35 years ago Dad and I wouldhave a few days in January or Februarythinning some of the ash to make fencingstakes or sycamore or holly for firewood, but for the last 15 years or so nothing wascut and, with the loss of light, theprimroses began to disappear. With the help of John Morris at theChilterns Woodland Project I got a fellinglicence and in 2014 we marked up and soldsome ‘standing firewood’. It looked a bitdrastic, seeing so many trees with orangespots, but John knows what he is doing and

JUNE IN YOUR GARDENWith nice long warm days this is the month that we can really enjoy our gardens. There arestill plenty of jobs to get on with. The flower garden. We have not had a frost in June for over forty years so it should be safeto plant out the most tender plants. Plant the beds and borders with bedding plants such asageratum, begonias, cosmos, dahlias, marigolds, nemesia and petunias using alyssum andlobelia for edging. Geraniums, fuchsias, large flowered begonias and pelargoniums areplants that do not need a great deal of water. Plant up hanging baskets, window boxes andcontainers with geraniums, fuchsias, begonias, surfinia, petunias, and calibrachoa usingtrailing plants such as verbena, nepeta, bidens, bacopa, lobelia and trailing begonias. Mixwater retaining gel such as SwellGel with good compost when planting and feed regularlywith a liquid feed such as Miracle Gro or Phostrogen. Feed roses, shrubs and perennials withToprose fertilizer or Vitax Q4, using an ericaceous feed for camellias, rhododendrons andazaleas. Spray roses every few weeks with something like Roseclear to prevent attacks ofblackspot, mildew and rust. Clip topiary such as box pyramids but do not cut hedges untilthe birds have finished nesting. Keep planting container grown roses, trees, shrubs, climbers, conifers and cottage garden hardy perennials. Stake the taller growing plants andapply thick mulches around plants to help moisture conservation.Fruit and vegetables. Start to pick strawberries and raspberries and cover with netting tokeep the birds off. Strawberry runners can be rooted and potted ready for planting out fornext season. Plant out runner beans, marrows and courgettes, outdoor tomatoes and ridgecucumbers and make further sowings of runner beans plus dwarf beans, carrots, peas, swedeand sweet corn. Plant Brussels sprouts, celery, leeks and winter cabbage and sow saladcrops regularly plus catch crops. Earth up the potatoes and start to harvest new potatoes.Watch for the caterpillars of the cabbage white butterfly and remove them and coverbrassicas with netting which should help. Put codling moth traps up into apple trees, if notalready done. Water vegetables regularly, hoe to keep down weeds and feed with growmorefertilizer or fish, blood and bone. The greenhouse. Tomatoes need to be tied up and side shoots will need to be removed andalways water tomatoes regularly and feed with liquid feed such as Tomorite. There is stilltime to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines and peppers in pots and growbags. Watch forgreenhouse whitefly and putting up sticky traps often helps. Keep the greenhouse wellventilated and damp down during hot spells to keep the humidity up.Lawn and garden. Keep cutting lawns regularly but never cut too short especially in hotdry weather. Water new turfed or seeded grass areas but never water established lawns. After a very dry spell brown lawns will always green up quite quickly. Water plants growingin containers regularly, but it should not be necessary to water plants growing in the groundunless they have just been planted.Shows and events. Chipperfield Summer Flower Show on 16 June and BovingdonShow is on 30 June. The RHS Chatsworth Flower Show is on 6-10 June and the RHSHampton Court Palace Flower Show is on 2-8 July (tickets from rhs.org.uk/shows or ring0844 995 9664). now it’s hard to believe we took any out atall. But there are more primroses than Ihave ever seen before! This morning Ted, my old dog, wasfeeling quite spritely and we walked up toThe Wings, enjoying the dawn chorus. Thebluebells were just opening and there weregreat pools of snow-white blooms on theramsons or wild garlic plants. I hate thesmell when one treads on the leaves, butthey looked stunning amongst thebluebells in the low morning light. Theyare spreading and so is the delicate littlewoodruff. Violets are everywhere; it mademy heart sing!Soon the leaves will be out on the trees andthe wood will take on a different feel. ThenI will have to decide when to thin again. Ihave done several woodland managementcourses recently and it seems one shouldlook at a wood every five years and thin asnecessary, so maybe next year or the yearafter. I will not be leaving it so long again, that is for sure! Wendy Bathurst
