On Tuesday, August 2nd neighborhoods throughout Chino Hills are invitedto join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 28th AnnualNational Night Out (NNO) crime and drug prevention event. National NightOut was designed to heighten awareness and to strengthen police-communityrelationships. It gives neighbors the opportunity to gather, get reacquainted, and discuss how to make their neighborhoods safer.

Swimming pools and hot tubs are enjoyable and they are popular in Chino Hills. In order to properly maintain them, they must be drained periodically. When youare ready to drain your pool or hot tub, please follow the steps below to ensure thatharsh pool chemicals are not allowed to enter the storm drain system through the

street gutters which causes pollution concerns.

Many newer pools are built to drain directly into the sanitary sewer system. Yourplumber or pool maintenance company can tell you if your pool has that feature. If not, follow these simple tips to ensure that your pool or hot tub water can besafely drained to the gutter:

1. De-chlorinate - Chlorine naturally dissipates over time and should be completely gone if the wateris left standing for 3-5 days. Use a pool testing kit prior to discharge to ensure the concentration of chlorine is zero.

2. Check pH Levels – determine the pH of the water before draining the hot tub or pool, or ask yourpool maintenance company to check the level. The pH level should be between 6.5 and 8.5.

3. Drain Only Clear Water - Make certain the water is free of any discoloration, dirt, or algae.4. Control Flow – Make certain that the ow of draining water is controlled so that it does not cause

erosion problems on your property or your neighbor’s property. Use the water on your landscape if possible.

For further information contact the City’s NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System)Program Coordinator at (909) 364-2714. More tips are available at www.sbcountystormwater.orgwww.sbcountystormwater.org.

Chino Hills has worked to protect 3,000 acres of open space whichprovide beautiful views of green rolling hills during the spring. Thatlush vegetation must be cut back to reduce the danger of wildland res that summer brings. Weed abatement crews from the PublicWorks Department work from April through the end of June to cutthe weeds and reduce the vegetation in our open spaces. In someareas sheep are doing the work, in other areas people and equipmentare doing the work. This year about 1,800 sheep have beenmunching their way through

the slopes of the Rancho Hills area. Vegetation is cleared from a zoneof about 30 to 100 feet from the perimeter fence in the open spaceareas depending upon conditions. Fire breaks are also cut in 50 – 100foot paths within the open space areas. Fuel Modi cation Zones

are maintained and landscaped areas that abut open space areas areplanted with shrubs and trees from an approved list. This major weedabatement effort reduces re danger in the open space areas.

The best way to avoid ticks is to avoid the edges of trails, grassy areas, and brush. Ticks jump aboard fora meal when an animal or a human brushes past thenatural vegetation. Light-colored clothing makes iteasier to see ticks; and long pants and long sleevesmake it harder for ticks to get beyond clothing. TheDistrict recommends using a good repellent. Theactive ingredients DEET and Picaridin are effectiverepellents that may be applied directly to the skin.Repellents containing Premethrin are effective andfor use on clothing only.

Avoid TicksIt is also important to perform a "tick check"on yourself, your children and familymembers, and pets. When performing a tick check, visually inspect and feel areas such ashair, scalp, groin, feet, socks, and waistband.Visit the District’s website atwww.wvmosquito.orgwww.wvmosquito.org and select “vectors”for more information about how to spot andremove ticks. Please call the District at(909) 635-0307 if you wish to have a tick identi ed, have questions, or want moreinformation. Please call the District if yoususpect that you have found a brown dog tick.

Bees are a vital part of our economic and agricultural society. Various threats are decimating our beepopulations. Without bees, life as we know it would not be possible. Bee swarms are almost always docileand very common. A swarm is a traveling unit of bees which include one queen and a host of workers thatleave the nest when a new queen is reared. Swarming bees often rest in shaded areas near trees and bushes, under eaves of homes, and even under park benches. It's vital that all residents leave ALL bees alone! Aswarm is a transient state; the bees will often leave the area in 24 to48 hours after the queen is rested. The West Valley Mosquito andVector Control District recommends allowing bees ample time toleave on their own before pursuing extermination. If you encountera swarm or nest, just walk away from the area and avoid it until thebees leave the area. For more information about bees, visit the WestValley Mosquito and Vector Control Districts website atwww.wvmosquito.orgwww.wvmosquito.org or call (909) 635-0307. The District may beable to help nd a beekeeper to help remove a swarm or nest.
