With great Siyata Dishmaya, the School for Children

with Hidden Intelligence was founded nineteen years ago by Rabbi Osher Eise-

mann. From its first five students, to the current enrollment of over 190 children,

SCHI has grown quickly, never compromising on its high standards of Special

Education. In March 2007, a new, state of the art facility opened its doors. There,

children of all ages learn to walk, speak, think for themselves and feed them-

selves. Dedicated teachers and therapists put their hearts and souls into the stu-

dents. Disability is conquered through warmth, love and joy.

To most mothers, this means another year has passed; her child has matured, and it’s time to start thinking about school. For me, turning four has a different meaning. Shloimy is a bright child who knows what he wants to say. He has a mind of his own and knows where he wants to be at all times. He has an endearing personality, and can charm anyone who cares to take a second look and see what his eyes try to express. Shloimy does not yet walk and cannot talk. To me, a birthday signifies another year to set goals and to try and achieve what comes naturally to other children. It’s an awesome responsibility. I used to find it very overwhelming. I could never be sure I was doing enough for him. That is, until Shloimy started at the School for Children with Hidden Intelligence (SCHI).

Shloimy has been attending SCHI for one year now. I cannot properly express how amazed I am with SCHI as a whole, and with each and every staff member in particular. The staff give of themselves completely for our children. They work with Shloimy every step of the way, teaching him to feed himself, dress himself, eat properly, use his imagination, walk, and talk to his full capabilities. His chair in the class has elastic wrapped around it so that when he kicks, he exercises his muscles; bringing him one step closer to walking independently. His speech therapist sits with him at lunch to teach him how to chew properly. His teacher and aide are at his side helping him learn everyday life skills. Not only do they tend to his needs in school, they make it their business to ensure that he gets the proper care at home too. His physical therapist ordered a walker for our use at home, making numerous phone calls to get insurance approval.

Shloimy is a bright little boy, and has benefited tremendously from the one-on-one teaching he has experienced at SCHI. His progress over the past year is unbelievable. He now holds a crayon properly and colors more neatly than his two year old brother. He throws and catches balls, blows bubbles in the bath, walks on a treadmill at one mile per hour holding on to the railings, and feeds himself with a fork.

Shloimy recently had surgery on his legs and was in a lot of pain. After 10 days, he was still not moving around and was very whiny and uncomfortable. I decided to try to send him back to school. It was then that I realized how much Shloimy lives for school! The moment he walked into school, he was all smiles. His teachers would not have known he had surgery, if not for the casts on his legs.

As we approach yet another birthday, I look forward to a year of growth and accomplishment. With the incredible support of SCHI, I no longer feel overwhelmed. I feel so comfortable knowing that he is getting the best care possible by the most qualified and dedicated people. The stimulation, warmth, and love that he gets in SCHI just can’t be duplicated anywhere else in the world. I’m convinced of that more and more each day.
