A Pastoral Word

June 2015

The prophet Eli was mentoring a young boy named Samuel. (1 Samuel 3). One night, the boy kept coming to Eli. Samuel thought he kept hearing Eli call his name. The old prophet did not become frustrated by the interruptions. Instead, he was able to sense there was something more happening in the moment. So he told Samuel to go lie down and this time when he heard his name being called, he should quiet himself and say, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.”

Eli’s ability to sense God moving and acting in that moment allowed Samuel to hear and accept his call from God. Others might have been annoyed by the boy’s interruptions. Others would have been too focused on their own agenda to be aware of what God might be trying to do around them. This ancient story encourages us to keep open to what God is doing around us at all times.

This summer, it is clear that God is doing a great deal around us and through us. We have several different groups of youth and adults engaged in mission. We will soon have over 200 children engaged in high action fun as we seek to help them respond to the call of God in their life. Worship times change on June 21 (8:30 and 10:00 a.m. on Sundays), with some exciting new additions that will open us more to the stirring of God. A great deal of work continues after a successful capital campaign to prepare for the construction to come next year.

This summer, we are witnesses and supporters to those who are hearing the call of God upon their life. We will celebrate Rev. Amy Mayo-Moyle as she follows God’s call to a new congregation and Rev. Christine Wyatt as God leads her to retirement and new ways of serving. We will receive Pastor Kyle Bucholtz as he comes with excitement to serve in ministry here along with Rev. Hal Weemhoff who will bring a great deal of experience and energy to our adult education and spiritual formation ministry.

In the midst of all of this, God is moving and speaking. God has called many already to serve and lead in ministry for this summer. How is God calling you? What will be your joy in ministry and encounter with God this summer? I give thanks for the blessings we have known and the ones to come. To God be the Glory! Pastor Rick

From Pastor Amy

The packing of my office and our parsonage has begun in earnest. I’ve procrastinated long enough, I guess. Five years have certainly flown by quickly. As I think back on these past five years and all that we’ve done as a church, I want to say thank you. Thank you for inviting me into your lives and allowing me to be your pastor. Thank you for supporting the ministry of CUMC and taking the mission statement to “vitally connect people to people and people to God,” so seriously. Thank you for volunteering to help make ministry happen, and for being a welcome place for new ideas. Thank you for supporting my family and for being our friends. Thank you for living your faith. Thank you to all those who served with me on various committees over these years: missions, hospitality, speaker’s series, UMW, SNW planning team, high school parent support. Thank you to those who served as parent companions, journey companions, SNW band members, greeters, ushers, ACGF volunteers, Righteous Mission adult leaders, Spring Hill Chaperones, and everything else. Thank you to the High School Youth Leaders: Jill Cascone, Jeremy and Jenny Dean, Mark Ettinger, Debbie Giola and Cody Senkyr. It has surely been a blessing to serve among you. Thank you to the trustees for all your work and updates on our parsonage, and thank you to the SPRC for all of your care and support. I have loved being a part of the CUMC staff and am so thankful to each staff member. They have been my partners in ministry and have made me a better pastor. Thank you to “the village” who surrounded my family, who watched my kids, picked them up from school, drove them to different things, cheered for them at swim meets and are just wonderful friends. I will forever be thankful to Pastor Rick for bringing me to Clarkston and inviting me to share in ministry, for challenging me, loving me, teaching me, mentoring me and being a pastor to my family. I have truly loved my five years as associate pastor of Clarkston United Methodist Church. While I will no longer be your pastor, I will continue to pray for you, as you grow in Christ and with each other. You are truly the hands and feet of Christ, and I can’t wait to hear all that God will continue to do in and through you in the years to come. Welcome Pastor Kyle warmly, invite him into your hearts, just as you did me. Together you will do great things! With All My Love, Pastor Amy

(Mission Updates continued)

Helping Hands Helping Hearts Update Dear Church Family, We would like to thank you for your blessed, continuous support of our mission. Your support over the past 8 years since our mission started has been incredible. Thank you to all of those who attended our 8th Annual Coral Ball fundraiser, for those who sponsored the event and made donations to our mission, thank you. It is because of your wonderful support that our mission is where it is today. Our Child Sponsorship Program is larger than ever and growing, we have had over 50 Water Filter Systems sponsored (some of which have already been installed and others in the process), we continue to pass out Backpacks filled with School Supplies to children every year, provide meals to hospital patients, those living on the streets and those most in need, and so many other mission projects that take place year round. So far in 2015 our mission has been able to directly help over 2,000 children and families around Honduras. We thank you for sharing this mission journey with us, for your donations and prayers. If you would like to signup to receive frequent updates about our mission, please visit our website www.helpingheartshelpinghands.org and fill out the "Sign Up to Receive Mission Updates" box. Our annual Golf Outing fundraiser is coming up in August 2015, exact dates to be announced very soon, please check our website or contact us if you are interested in more information on this event. We have many children on our current Child Sponsorship waiting list. Our June Child of the Month is Emerson. For only $30 per month you could change Emerson's life or choose from the children on our waiting list. They need YOU! May God bless you all and have a wonderful summer! Lay Leader Reflections June 2015 Pastor Amy’s Legacy Everyone knows Amy. Loved, adored, admired. We know her in her capacity as our Associate Pastor, a title that carries many facets. Her office door is always open and her voice and beautiful, warm smile are a welcome sight at any time, no matter what is on her list to do that day.

The transition from smaller to larger congregation in 2010 was huge – it was a new church for Mike and for her, new communities and a whole new world for Allison and Ben to explore. We remember how she jumped in with a passion that is unique to her and which touched many of us as we thrilled to have her shepherd our groups, bringing her eagerness, creativity, experience and spirituality to the staff, to worship, UMW, youth, VBS story-telling, missions, retreats and hospitality. She has an exceptional ability to nurture relationships, to work with people, to organize and encourage with outspoken, frank opinions given in wisdom and tactfulness.

Amy takes worthy projects to heart -- with a plate of her yummy cookies the centerpiece of many meetings. She has a fearlessness that is emboldening - she is always invested in the moment at hand and thinking ahead.

We know her in her pastor’s robes leading worship with her enthusiasm and sincerity for the many ministries that are an integral part of CUMC. We hear her sermons of inspiration, and her openness in admitting less than perfection. Outside our walls her leadership in the Detroit Conference arena has been recognized.

What defines Amy is her calling to serve God as a pastor and in all aspects of her life, which she heard as a teen. It is her life’s mission to be all she can for Him at home with family, in the church and beyond. Hers is a ministry of relationships.

Amy leaves us for other pastures, for another flock that needs a shepherd. She has helped us to grow, to care more about our neighbor and has been an exemplar of the love of Christ. Her time with us is completed and she has trained and challenged many of us to grow in His way, not dissimilar to parents who raise children for them to grow and take flight, making the most of their gifts. It is hard to let go, but, Amy, please know that you will always be with us! Your sparkle remains! Thank you, Amy! We are richer for knowing you. You have blessed our lives so that we may be a blessing to others.

May God continue to shine his grace upon your family, your journey and those you touch!

Brenda DuPree Lay Leader

We also visited the College of the Ozarks. All of the students work at the College to pay for their tuition. As this was a ‘visiting’ mission trip as opposed to a ‘working’ mission trip, we saw several shows among which were the Passion Play at Eureka Springs, the Dutton's, the ‘Sight and Sound” Theatre where we saw Jonah – complete with live animals, and Twice Adopted. We also had a steamboat river cruise with lunch and a show. Thanks be to God: we had safe travels and very good weather during the trip which was wonderful! As a side note: Prayers are requested for Brenda Dominy’s family who was to attend and recently passed away. For information on the above listed events or to register for any of them, please call Suzanne Tinka at (248) 625-3405 or E-mail: [email protected].

ARM Update The phase I transformation of this year’s ARM 2015 at the Hope Warming Center took place this past weekend. Many thanks to Chuck Fortinberry and Terry Hemingsen as they donated their time and equipment to move dirt, remove trees, old foundations and re-grade the empty lots. Houston Hemingsen was the youngest member of the team and provided plenty of energy and insight to the group on foundation removal and property grading fine points. The lots will have a new 300’ chain link fence installed and a 16’ by 20’ outdoor pavilion will be built. Additionally preparation work was done to relocate a vegetable garden and clear the property to make room for a new storage shed and dumpster surround. The day was very productive and also provided the opportunity to share time with the guests of Hope giving us the opportunity to remember our blessings. The ARM 2015 mission week is June 15th thru June 19th. This is a schedule friendly mission trip collaborated along with Lowe’s of Bloomfield Hill and the Troy Rotary. Sign up or donations for the trip can be done on line through the CUMC missions website. For any questions concerning this powerful mission opportunity please contact Jeff Smolek, Jim Degen, or David Kanous. We look forward to seeing the CUMC team in action and helping our brothers and sisters at HOPE.

Adult Righteous Mission 2015—Hope Hospitality and Warming Center June 15 - 19 – Enroll On-Line Today!

As you may know we will be serving at Hope Hospitality and Warming Center in Pontiac this year. HH&WC reaches individuals in need of a warm place to sleep, a meal, and other basic essentials, right here in our neighborhood! Through ARM, you can carry the love of Christ to those who desperately need our support. And to help with life’s busy schedules, you can participate with ARM for one to five days! And schedule changes are not a problem!

This year projects include: replacing a fence, removing dead trees and stumps, tree trimming, building a dumpster enclosure, shed and pavilion, gardening and landscaping, painting, praying, teaching, and connecting people to God.

There is a role for everyone who would like to participate, including parents with young children. Once again, CUMC will be holding Kid's Camp for the children of ARM participants, on Wednesday, June 17th. With an abbreviated schedule for Kid’s Camp parents, it is a great way for the kids to have fun together, and the parents to serve. Get all the details at ClarkstonUMC.org. We certainly hope you will join us!

There is a giving tree for ARM 2015 in the Narthex with tags for gift cards and items that are needed for the ARM (Adult Righteous Mission) week at HOPE Hospitality and Warming Center, June 15-19th. Please turn in your donations and cards to the church office. Thank you.
