Chad’s Cheesy Chatter By Chad Cansler

On Saturday after the club meeting I received an e-mail resignation by one the first friends I gained in the club. I can’t help but think… what a disappointment! My friend’s main point for leaving was: we no longer discuss about the cars, it’s all club business and money. He has been a member since its founding days and is deeply passionate/knowledgeable about MG’s. His presence will be missed.

In honor of my friend I won’t blab about the holiday party, bylaw revision, or the money in the bank… I’m just going to talk cars.

I often wonder to myself, why the vast majority of my generation aren’t interested in cars. My first thought goes to the fact that my generation was raised with cars that were built in a time that any sort of imagination or sexiness had been written off as frivolous and wasteful (something only the super rich could afford). The auto manufactures drive to save money and focus strictly on safety phased out any sort of creativity. These factors set the stage for people to see cars as simply a transportation tool than any kind of device for enjoyment. The reason I joined this club was to try and spread the joy of MG’s to as many people as possible. I want my generation to know that cars can be fun; you just simply need to go back in time.

Speaking of going back in time; I get angry that I missed the heyday of the British automobile. I wish I had the opportunity to walk down to the local BMC dealership and say I want to test drive a brand new ( ) fill in the blank.

A. Austin Healey 3000 B. Jaguar XKE C. MGB/C/ Midget D. Riley Elf E. Vaden Plas Princess 1100 What I would give to slap my bum into a brand new

1967 MGB that rolled right off the factory in Abingdon. (I had a friend in Wisconsin that had that honor of doing just that) I wonder if anyone takes a trip to Korea and is proud to pickup their brand new KIA right off the factory floor?

Being a history major, I know that the 1960’s was a very difficult decade but my god were automobiles stun-ning. It’s as if the cars help tell the story of that age just as

Page 3

well as the people that lived it. I was watching a documen-tary the other day about the civil rights movement. It was interesting to see a Triumph Herald just hanging out in the background next to all these American sedans down in Mississippi. I have heard stories that if you drove an im-ported car (back in the day) it would create very mixed re-actions from people. I have a hunch you would have to be a brave soul driving a quirky British car down in Mississippi during that time period. Would your body be pulled out of a river for being so brash as not to support Detroit? Probably not, but all the same...how times change! Anyway back to cars…

I guess the last thing I have to say about our MG's and classics in general is the sensory satisfaction they deliver. I love the smell of old cars, the gear oil, the vinyl, the fiber-board. It’s fascinating that something manufactured in a certain time period can smell of that age. You pull the choke and turn the key and boom you have slipped through time and space and you are in a completely different frame of mind. All of a sudden your cell phone just becomes a device to let you know the time, the driver has much more important things to do… like keep an eye on the oil and temp gauge, listen for any odd sounds, but most impor-tantly experience the joy of an internal combustion engine being served the correct mixture of air/fuel from a pair of hissing S.U. carburetors working along with the clockwork of the LUCAS distributor ticking away with it’s 1,3,4,2 firing order. You instantly realize that modern transmis-sions just don’t slip into gear like an MG does. The feeling is just mechanical “butter” and the whining of the transmis-sion when you downshift is such comical musical experi-ence. I like to think the transmission song is titled “Hey… Don’t Slow Down” by Mr. MOWOG and the 3 Syncros. This car is singing to you in such a symphonic way it wraps you in a blanket of mechanical harmony, you would have to be a fool not to be intoxicated by its song. That being said; I don’t know about the rest of you but its time for a drive! I hope that was a decent go at talking cars... All members should share their car stories!

Safety Fast, Chad Cansler

It looks like not only will we be doing a RAFFLE, we will also be doing an AUCTION. We have a couple of members that may have some pretty nice prizes to auction off. So bring your money and be ready to spend it. The club will purchase a few items with the raffle money we have collected this year, plus we are going to go to some businesses and see if we can get some gift certificates do-nated. If you know of any business that we might be able to contact to get a donation from please let us know. Also if anyone would like to put together a basket to donate, a va-cation home for a few days or a week to donate, tickets to a show, tickets to a game, anything car related, gift certifi-cates from a restaurant. The raffle will be smaller this year, but we are looking for quality items. Great Drive— Great Food— Great Friends By Jim & Peggy Oliver

Great turn out for the Or-chard Heights Brunch.... We had 52 people from three clubs - Mt. Hood Miata/Willamette MG/Columbia Gorge MG. It's so much fun to do things together. Meeting at the back side of the I-5 Wilsonville rest stop gave us plenty of room to park. Great day for tops down -driving over the back roads with a few twisty ones, crossing over the Wheatland Ferry and waiting on the other side for 3 ferry crossings to join all of us on the West side. Following

our guides (Terry and Sarah Harris) on more back roads and twists and turns ending up at the winery for a delicious brunch-all you can eat. Afterwards there was wine tasting and a wonderful gift shop. Thanks everyone for coming and hope we can do it again next year.

Club Meeting—November 14 We meet in the side-room at Stark Street Pizza (92nd

and SE Stark Street in Portland). There is social (and/or dinner) time before the meeting which starts at 7:30 pm. The business part is generally short. If you have any issue to bring before the Board, you can bring it up at the club meeting. Sometimes there is a guest speaker or a just-for-fun raffle.

Clinic—November 19: Crazy Box This is the "year in review" clinic. Each year we have

some very strange failures on the cars we love and work on. Most of the time these failures did not have to happen so we use these weird parts to start discussions on what could have been done so the car and owner didn't have these problems. Some parts are almost beyond belief others just

broke in some strange way, some failures left the car on the side of the road, some were just annoying. We throw these parts in the "Crazy Box" and this is their evening to come out and be very good, bad examples.

We also encourage everyone to bring some odd failed part(s) to share. So be prepared to see some odd parts and make sure that some "Crazy Box" failure doesn't happen to you. Always the Wednesday after the Club Meeting

When: Social at 7:00; session starts at 7:30! Where: Foreign Parts Positively—19900 NE189th St.

I'm Not Getting Older But My Cars Are! By Keith Ansell

This is not a completely new problem but one that is happening more often. The things you might observe foretelling a failure are the charge light flickering when your car is running, a miss when driving, or maybe a complete failure which completely turns the electrics off on your car. It stops!

The Culprit: Wires getting so old that the insulation on wires is getting stiff and brittle. While this sometimes creates cracks in the insulation it creates a bigger problem in that wires can no longer flex when your engine moves.

The Results: The biggest thing we are starting to see is on the MGB built from 1966 to 1980. The problem stems from the wire that feeds everything electrical in the car that comes from the starter. This heavy brown wire must flex every time the engine moves, shakes or vibrates. By now its' insulation is hard and brittle, it can't flex. It is attached to the frame about 8 inches from the starter and this 8 inches must flex or it eventually pulls out of the fitting on the starter eventually bringing the car to a stop with no electricity to anything! The first thing you might notice is that the ignition light occasionally flick-ers, this is the wire working itself loose from the wire fitting. As this wire continues to pull itself out of the connection you may even find the car missing. Finally it will totally disconnect and the car totally goes dead, no lights- nothing. This hap-pened to me about one mile from my house on a dark night, not a streetlight around, just instantly stopped, no lights, no emergency flashers......nothing.

The other area stiff/brittle wires are causing problems is wires to the generator or alternator. As the engine rocks it de-stroys the connectors to the back of the unit. This may simply lead to the battery going dead Continued on page 9

Bylaws Committee Report By Gene Nunn

The Bylaws Committee has been working since early in the year to update the club's bylaws and bring them into alignment with the way the club does business. Changes to the Bylaws were presented at the October Membership meeting. There were a few questions raised that were an-swered and the changes were well received.

The current bylaws state that approval is by a simple majority vote at a membership meeting. There will be a motion at the November meeting to approve them. The vote will follow and the decision will be made by simple majority of those present and voting.

The Committee and the Board both recommend

approval. A summary of the changes is at right. You can obtain a

copy of the current Bylaws on the website.

Econo Run Recap By Margaret Daly

Thanks to ALL who participated in the 3rd Annual Economy Run, you made our event a success once again.

Everyone had a fabulous time, unfortunate the city of Portland decided to give us an extra hazard by closing one of the exits we were planning to use.... but still, everyone was able to navigate around and complete the rest of the course without other mishaps.

I know every one enjoyed 'The Original Pumpkin Patch' on Sauvie Island, a few have been back to spend more time participating in the many attractions they have there.

Finishing up at Dirty Hands Brewery for refreshments was a treat and so nice of them to open up on their day off, for us.

We gave away many prizes but the main ones, the ones that give bragging rights for the rest of the year were the most fun.... Taunya McKee winner of the best gas mileage in her 1966

Austin Healey Sprite 38.338mpg. Josh Staley winner of the worst gas mileage in his 1973

MGB GT, 18.282mpg.(not sure he will want to brag about that)

And the winner of the best navigator award, Donna McNabb. Hope to see you all next year for more fun fun fun,

more prizes and different roads.

Bylaws Change Summary By Gene Nunn

The strike-through and italics format is difficult to wade through so rather than print that format we have cho-sen to describe the highlights and invite anyone who wants to go through the document line by line to email Gene at [email protected] and request a complete copy of the proposed changes.

The Highlights Article One, Club Name and Purpose: The current pur-

pose statement is wordy, repetitive, and mentions items not part of the club's priorities. It has been rewritten.

Article Two, Non-profit Restriction and Dissolution: There are minor changes dealing with the disposal of club property in the event of the club's dissolution.

Article Three, Nondiscrimination: Earlier in the year the Board created an editorial policy that, in part, addresses nondiscrimination in the newsletter. This article is new and addresses nondiscrimination in all of the club's activities.

Article Four, Membership and Dues: (1) The member-ship classification of "honorary" which has never been used, and, based on the requirement of a majority vote of the entire membership, could probably never be used, is eliminated. (2) The method of determining dues is changed from one requiring a bylaws amendment to a process where the Board recommends a dues amount and the mem-bership ratifies or rejects that recommendation. (3) The other major change in this article is the creation of a "vote of the whole" provision whereby a member who feels strongly that the entire club should be polled for a particu-lar decision (as was the case with the name change) can request a vote of the whole. The request requires a motion, a second, and must be approved by the members present at the membership meeting where it was requested.

Article Five, Club Management: The current language says the Board has the power to make, amend, and enforce the rules of the club. The new languages says the Board will have the power to implement the rules of the club.

Article Six, Elections: This article remains largely un-changed with the exception of adding language regarding filling vacancies on the Board.

Article Seven, Changing Bylaws: New language changes the process for changing the Bylaws from a vote of only those present at a membership meeting to a vote of the entire membership.

The goal of the committee is to bring the bylaws into

alignment with the way we do business and to suggest lan-guage that clarifies ambiguous areas. Both the Bylaws Committee and the Board support these changes and rec-ommend their approval.

Older Cars from page 7 but can destroy the alternator or generator or the worst I have seen is that it shorts to ground, burns, starts a fire and may totally destroy the wiring harness! Expensive!

The Solution: Fix wires now before they stop you. It's very inexpensive and anyone that can fix it. Check all the wires that run from the car to any part of the engine or gear-box. Any wires that run near a heat source are the first to go brittle. Wires to starters are some of the worst and second is those that are near the exhaust manifold. If you can find wires with the same wire color code it will help you and others in the future (old car's wiring harnesses can be stripped and wires of the proper color code will be found that are deep in the harnesses will still be flexible), Replace all the brittle wire by soldering Continued on page 10

Road Trip to Detroit (Oregon, that is!) By John and Sondra Dutra

Tops were down, but some people were bundled up for the 8:00 am start from the Oregon City Shopping Center headed for Detroit. It’s a scenic drive south on Hwy 213 which takes you through historic Fishers Corner, Mulino, Liberal, Silverton, and Sublimity, then heading east on Hwy 22 with less and less civilization and more and more country. Our line of British cars included two MGAs (Ansells and Drakes), an MGB (Dutras), an MG Midget (Stoses) and a Triumph (Lesters). It’s always fun to see a group of our cars going through the turns like an amuse-ment park ride!

The town of Detroit closes their four block main street for this annual Show and Shine. We rolled in and took some of the last spots on the east end of town. The turnout this year was double last year, with our British contingent being just about all the “foreign” class entries (there was one other Triumph). We wandered down to the Fire Station for registration, raffle tickets and breakfast. Pancakes, scrambled eggs and ham were on the menu. As we sat down, we were greeted by lots of locals (including the fire chief) who thanked us for coming out for their event. There was an impressive collection of raffle prizes and most eve-ryone in our group came away with something. Once we had wiped the cars down, it was time for a stroll to check out the show. Lots of opportunities to talk to proud owners about all the work they had done on their cars. (At least that was what the guys were doing, us girls were just moseying and chatting!) The Bells, Mannings and Mullowneys ar-rived in time for the afternoon festivities.

The rest of the day was spent hanging out together, lunch and ice cream, raffle prizes and awards. The Drakes took “Best Foreign” trophy, yay! We got settled in our rooms and rested up for the evening. Dinner at the Korner Post Restaurant in the Steel Wheels Lounge. Lots of motor-cycle memorabilia and a nice meal together (along with some video poker fascination!) We had the now traditional camp fire at the motel with s’mores, gin & tonics and wine. What more could you want?

Breakfast bright and early, then a group photo at the restaurant. We mostly went our separate ways, with three cars heading for Government Camp via Forest Service roads. Started off a bit brisk, but the sun came out and it was a glorious drive! Lunch at Charlie’s historic eatery, then down the mountain for home. Thanks Keith & Ursula for putting this together. We had a great time. Let’s plan on next year!

Older Cars from page 9 the new wire in place and covering with shrink tube at each joint.

Also the stiff wires are affecting connectors and fuse boxes. Fuse boxes (two and four fuse styles) are loosing the tightness of internal parts and are becoming a problem. These are very inexpensive and can improve everything electrical from lights to performance! The “lucar” or spade connectors may be loose and need either tightening up with an easy squeeze with pliers or some may even need replac-ing.

Take a few moments and catch these wires before they catch you!

Safety Fast.
