This week, Open the Book taught us about Jesus’ special friends. Jesus was walking when he began talking to a crowd but it got too big. He asked a fisherman to sail him out onto the lake; the fisherman’s name was Peter. After he had talked to the crowds, he asked Peter to fish with him but Peter said, “We have fished all night but caught nothing!” Still, they went out. After a while, the nets were so full of fish that another boat had to come to help; if it hadn’t, the boat would have sunk. The message from this story was to show the disciples and remind us that God can do anything! Vicar Andrew talked about how, when we think about those things, it might be scary. He asked us have we ever thought about why we have fear. He told us some Bible stories which include fear the shepherds meeting the angels; an angel appearing to Mary; Moses leading God’s people; and Jonah and the whale. Vicar Andrew then reminded us that when we do something new it can be scary but as we learn, we get better and lose that fear. Another very busy week in school; it’s always lovely to walk around and share in the learning experiences of our children at all stages of the school – no two days are ever the same! National Science Week 6th – 15th March Calling All Scientists! If your job is Science based and you would be willing to come into School during National Science Week to talk to a class or year group about what your job entails and why Science is important in your job, please can you let Mrs Moore (Year 2 teacher) or Mrs Duckworth know and we will be in touch to arrange a time. Thank you in advance!

Staff News We said goodbye to Ms Igglesden on Friday, as she left us to start a new post at a local secondary school. She was very keen to leave with the minimum of fuss, hence I haven’t informed you earlier. I am sure you will join me in wishing her every success and happiness in her new post and I will still be seeing her regularly to share our school news.

KS1 Gymnastics Festival A group of our Y2 children took part in the KS1 Gymnastics Festival at Calderstones School this week. The Festival was a level 2 enjoyable pathway supporting physical, social and emotional well-being through gymnastics. The children develop a variety of skills such as rolling, travelling, balancing and jumping. The children were extremely well behaved and represented our school with pride; well done, everyone!

Y3&4 Sportshall Athletics It was Heat 3 of the Y3&4 Sportshall Athletics this week at Bellerive Catholic College, with 8 teams taking part from across the city. The top two teams would qualify for the City Finals on Tuesday 3rd March following all of the boys’ and girls’ teams’ scores combined. The children were brilliant in their track and field events and demonstrated all of the school games values, particularly passion and self-belief. The children were thrilled when it was announced that Childwall had finished in 1st place! Good luck in the City Finals, everyone.

Poetry Showcase On Friday afternoon we had our first ever Poetry Showcase, where every class in the school learned and performed a poem for the entire school! The poems ranged from classics by Rudyard Kipling, Spike Milligan and Roald Dahl, to Julia Donaldson, Allan Ahlberg and Kenn Nesbitt. The children spoke with such clarity and expression, and we look forward to incorporating it as a regular event in our school calendar. Young Leaders On Wednesday, Year 1 had a fun-filled afternoon with the Year 6 Sports Leaders. The children loved being taught new games by the older children!

Year 1 P.E. Year 1 have been very active this week! We have particularly enjoyed exploring various types of equipment in our PE lessons and how we can use them to play lots of different games. We had so much fun throwing, catching and running!

Year 5 Maths Year 5 have been learning about metric units of measurements and doing activities based on measurements of length, capacity and mass using metres, kilometres, litres, mililitres, grams and kilograms. I measured Miss Jordan and Mrs Woods and this gave me a better understanding of every day maths. Also, we have been thinking about positivity and resilience in maths and never giving up. Resilience + Effort = Positivity! By never giving up and keeping trying, you will find the answer. I think you should always have a positive mindset because it gives you good mental health. Elliot, Class 11 On Tuesday, we had a lesson where, instead of written work, we were going around the school collecting and using our metric measurement knowledge. Recently, we have learned about measurement which really paid off during that lesson. We had a great time and did lots of different activities, including estimating capacity of water in bottles. We also measured the distance between our classroom and the hall. I think every person in Year 5 enjoyed this lesson. We have also designed posters for our whole school display about having a positive maths mindset. It’s important to have a good mindset to help us when challenging things happen. Lucy, Class 11

Year 5 Computing 2D Design and Make Modelling is a great program: you can create cars, buses, lorries, vans, cubes, cuboids, triangular prisms and lots more. You can create mad vehicles or super shapes. Elliot, Class 11 During this term, we have used 2D Design and Make. This week’s lesson was to create a packaging design. We all had amazing designs which we have made and put lots of effort into. Lucy, Class 11

This week was Child Mental Health week and our Votes for Schools lesson looked at how mental health can affect people differently and how we can help to look after both our own mental health and that of those around us. We thought about how we can support our friends, without impacting negatively on ourselves. We also looked at strategies to help ourselves feel better when we might be feeling low and the importance of telling somebody we trust how we feel. 78% of children felt that they could help to support a friend who might be struggling with their mental health.

Wonderful Words! The vocabulary we are learning across the curriculum is incredibly important and we make sure that children get lots of opportunities to say and spell topic-specific words. Each class have given an example of a ‘Wonderful Word’ they have used this week. Can your child explain the meaning of their class’ word to you?

Word of the Week As well as our curriculum vocabulary, every week we will be collectively looking at and displaying a different word which we are encouraging the children to use in their writing. It would be really beneficial if you could also spend some time discussing the word and its meaning with your child to help embed their knowledge of its use.

Whole school attendance this week has again exceeded our minimum target at 98.2%. Well done to classes 6 and 7 who

both had 100%. Can I please remind parents & carers that, whilst we realise that the timing of many hospital appointments

etc. cannot be chosen and are considered as authorised absences, routine appointments at dentist, opticians etc. should be arranged for outside school hours, in accordance with our school policy and city policy for pupil attendance.

Our menu for next week is: Monday – Pizza or Veggie Pizza with Herb Diced Potatoes & Vegetables Tuesday – Barbecue Chicken topped with Cheese or Roasted Vegetable Wrap with Savoury Rice & Vegetables or Salad Wednesday – Roast Dinner or Cauliflower & Broccoli Bake with Roast Potatoes & Vegetables Thursday – Spaghetti Bolognaise or Quorn Bolognaise with Garlic Bread & Salad Friday – Fishy Friday or Veggie Fingers with Dip with Chips & Beans Every Day: If children prefer, we also have a selection of sandwiches, hot baguettes, pasta pots, wraps and jacket potatoes available daily. The salad trolley and sliced bread are also available each day, in addition to the selected meal. Children are very welcome to try a small amount of ‘something new’ alongside what they have chosen to try to encourage them to be ‘more adventurous’ in their food choices. Desserts this week include fruity flapjack, chocolate rice crispy cake, fruit crumble & custard, oat biscuit, iced finger, ice cream, yoghurt and fresh fruit.

A reminder of the options for school dinners: 1. Packed Lunch for Junior Children 2. Packed Lunch with Fishy Friday for Junior Children 3. School Dinner Once you have selected an option, this will need to remain the option for the remainder of the half term. This ensures that our kitchen staff are able to order and prepare the correct number of school meals. The cost of a school dinner is £2.00 per day and must be paid for weekly in advance. All infant children receive a Universal Free School Meals

End of School Day As you know, we have strong procedures in place to ensure that children are dismissed from school to the appropriate adult. Many thanks for keeping us informed when your child is to be collected by somebody other than those already listed on your child’s records. The beginning and end of the school day are the only times when the gate is unlocked onto Woolton Road. At the beginning of the day, there are a number of staff members to ensure no child leaves the premises unsupervised. However, I am concerned that, at the end of the day, after being safely dismissed to their collecting adult, children are then running around and playing, with the potential of becoming separated from their adult. They are also climbing on walls and railings and riding bikes and scooters, all of which have safety implications. On Friday, there were two instances of quite young children attempting to leave school onto Woolton Road, having ‘lost’ their mum on the schoolyard. Fortunately, both children were stopped leaving and reunited with their parent. Can I please ask all adults to ensure that the children in their care remain with them and that families leave the school yard promptly so that we can relock the gate to safeguard children at after school clubs.

World Book Day - Thursday 5th March (left in for information) Can you believe it's that time of year again? Yes, that's right! Thursday 5th March is World Book Day so, once again, we are inviting children to come to school dressed as a character from their favourite book. We do stress, however, that over the years many of the best costumes have been the simplest, so please do not feel the need to go shopping for a costume. We understand, however, that some children do not enjoy dressing up, and families might choose to celebrate World Book Day in an alternative way, without dressing up. So, if you would rather come to school in your school uniform or own clothes on that day... 1) You could design a new cover for your favourite book, and bring that to school instead! 2) Why not create a 'Book in a Box'? Use an old shoebox to recreate a scene or setting from a book using bits and bobs from around the house. The deep dark wood from The Gruffalo maybe? Narnia? Hogwarts? Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory? We'd love to see your creativity! 3) Or, why not write your own story and bring that to school instead! The point of World Book Day is to celebrate the magic of reading, and encourage all children to participate - it is not a fancy dress competition, so we are really looking forward to seeing a school full of creativity in lots of different ways!
