Principal’s Message

Welcome to the Autumn 2015 edition of Newslink.

I think it’s appropriate to start with a review of the 2015 examination results. The students who completed their GCSEs this summer secured the

best set of GCSE results in the Academy’s history, with a 12% improvement on the previous year’s headline figure.

We are not however resting on our laurels and everybody here, both students and staff , know that this is an improvement which must continue year on year. The way in which our students have started this year in terms of attitude to learning, leaves me certain that they can deliver on this improvement.

To learn effectively, students must attend regularly, so it is particularly pleasing that attendance has also improved on last year and by a considerable margin.

Education is, of course, not just about what goes on in the

classroom day in and day out. Already, this academic year we have had numerous enriching activities including;

• Awards Evening

• Language Day

• Open Afternoons for parents of Year 6 students

• Educational visits

• Gifted and Talented Day

• Creative Arts Day

Amington FairEveryone had a brilliant time racing against other local schools over various obstacles. The whole day was a huge success and the Fete Committee said that “Today was a very special day for Amington, with over 2,000 people coming through the gates.” Lots of

other students from the school went too and enjoyed the wide variety of stalls that were on offer. The day remained very enjoyable right until it ended, with remarkable sunshine all the way through.

Daniel Robins Year 9

Back in June, the Amington Fete was held

and about 28 students from LFA Amington

competed in the It’s A Knockout Tournament.

We were very grateful for offers of places with John Lewis, Morrison’s, Primary Schools and many other business’ in the local area. Some students also went to Football Clubs and Jaguar/Land Rover.

We have had fantastic reports from both the students and Companies involved.

The Academy is looking forward

to working with Employers again next year, the current Year 10 students will be going on their placements from 4 to 8 July 2016. They are already starting to look for places, and would be grateful for any offers and contact details from Parents and Carers to help find places

Mrs L Tanner

London Art TripStudents were able to view a range of different types of Art and fashion at both museums and could choose what areas of the galleries they wanted to view. Students were also given the opportunity to go on the London Eye and view the whole of London on what turned out

to be a beautiful and sunny day, perfect for sightseeing. The tour guide talked to the students about all the famous landmarks and buildings and it was great to see the students so excited and enthusiastic about this. The day ended with some very cramped and busy trips on the

tube (which was a first-hand experience for most students) and a visit to Covent Garden to see the street performers and market stalls.

Mrs Gibson

The Art Department took 35 GCSE and

year 9 Art Students to London in June to visit

the Tate Modern and the Victoria and

Albert Museum.

On Monday 29th June we visited London for the day. We saw many things and we got to experience the London eye and view the 4D cinema. We then explored the beautiful Convent Garden and went for a bit of shopping. My favourite

parts of the day were seeing the gorgeous views from the London Eye such as the Shard, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the Google headquarters. Also I enjoyed looking around Convent Garden.

Mia Curtis Year 9

I really enjoyed my trip to London because I got to view different parts of London which I had never seen before. Going on the London eye was a really good experience and allowed me to view the whole of London. I hope I would be able to go again in the future. I also enjoyed the 4D cinema because

I could see London when they celebrate a different event (bonfire night ect.) which was also very enjoyable. I also liked the V & A museum because the Art was really good and I learnt something about different types of Art.

During the visit students practiced a variety of Geographical Fieldwork techniques by comparing the attractions on offer to tourists visiting Dovedale and Carsington Reservoir. Students had a great day exploring the reservoir, and walking to the top of ‘Lovers Leap’ at Dovedale.

On the 15th and 16th or September the

Geography department took all of Year 9 to

the Peak District National Park.

Geography Paris TripWe left at midnight due

to us having to catch the ferry at around 6am in the morning so all of

us was were tired.

Once we arrived in Paris we headed straight to the River Seine. We went on a river tour and saw lots of fascinating things such as significant buildings and statues. The next day we went on a tour starting from the Louvre which followed onto the Champs Elysee and then the Arc De Triomphe. At our stop on the Champs Elysee we had some time to ourselves

to go shopping. On our third day in France we got to go to Disneyland. It was amazing! We roamed the grounds of the park in our own friendship groups and got to go on lots of the thrill rides including Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster and the Hollywood Tower of Terror. Unfortunately, on the fourth day we had an early start and had to travel back home. We had a quick stop

at a chocolate factory where we were allowed to buy our own chocolate and see how it was made. Overall, our time in Paris was absolutely phenomenal and I’m sure anyone would recommend going, including myself. The trip runs again in 2016 and I’m sure it will run again after that.

Year 11 Lichfield Fieldwork TripOn the 2nd of September Year 11 students visited Lichfield to collect data and practice their fieldwork techniques to support their controlled assessments.

Students created a series of surveys beforehand, and were required to produce land-use maps and interview member of the pubic to establish whether or not ‘Fairly Traded’ products are available in our local area.

Enrichment DayIn July we had

an enrichmentday involving lots

of activities for the whole academy.

We were fortunate enough to have a visit from Louis Walsh’s new boy band ‘Hometown’. The new band from Ireland certainly had a huge impact on the students, their brilliant singing almost lifted the roof of our theatre.

The staff had an inflatable sumo wrestling championship for the students to watch. The highlight of the day was Mr & Mrs Robson going head to head in a fierce contest, with Mrs Robson being victorious after 5 rounds.

Thank you all for your kind donations once again.

On November 13th Staff and students paid £1 each to dress up or wear non uniform for the day.

MAC Room

The MAC is available to our students at break and lunch times, drop in sessions and directed support. Students will be able to access good quality advice, support and information from a range of different agencies. The MAC will also provide support for our more

vulnerable students who find it difficult to engage with their peers. They will be able to spend their break and lunch times engaging in various activities, from Art Therapy, Social interactive Games and jewellery making.

Mrs Martin & Mrs Mason

To help and support our students Landau Forte Amington has now opened a Multi-Agency Centre.

Rebekka O’BrienI wanted to become a Student Librarian as it would be a fun way to spend my time. I stamp the books out and tidy around the library. I enjoy doing this and find it really fun.

Katie BarkerI wanted to do this job because I love reading books. I love sorting the shelves out and making them look super tidy. I also enjoy helping the customers and serving them their new books!

Brandon BathI am so happy that I am a student librarian. It’s so much fun! I enjoy doing what I do. I love helping people pick what book they are going to read next. I always help them find it on the shelves.

Amy CuffI became a Student Librarian because it seemed like a responsible and very fun job. Also because my future dream job is to become a librarian.

During the summer term Geography

students in year 7 completed a short

flooding project as part of their Rivers Unit.

We have several student librarians at the academy. Here is what some of them have to say about their role.
