We have just completed the annual Scout Association census of members and are delighted to report that, for the sixth year running, the number of young people in our Scout Group has grown. In fact, 1st Old Malden is the largest it has been for well over 18 years! As we are sure you are aware, this success is in no small part due to the committed group of adult volunteers who run the Sections and spend time planning fantastic activities for your children. One of our younger adult members was recently completing a job application to work with children and wrote “Throughout my time in Scouting, the leaders’ enthusiasm encouraged me to have fun and do my best, and I now want to pass this on to children that I will work with.” What a great acknowledgement of what we strive to do!

You, too, can be a part of our success, so please get in touch with us to find out how you can get involved.

Our Summer Fair will be on Plough Green on Saturday 9th June, and this is always a fun-packed day when we can show the local community what scouting in Old Malden is all about. Please make sure you have told us how you can help on the day, so that we can make it another successful event.

Here’s to a great summer of Scouting!

Louise & Alison Joint Group Scout Leaders

Thank you to everyone who helped and supported the bag packing at Waitrose.

During the Autumn Term Yukon Colony were busy taking part in activities that will go towards their My World and My Outdoor Challenge badges. Highlights were learning about the festivals of Diwali and Harvest, making bird feeders and the memorable evening spent celebrating St Andrew’s Day when we tried to master the ‘Gay Gordons”! If you missed the video of our dancing skills, you can find it on the Group Facebook page! We also spent a few evenings doing the Cook Activity Badge, always a favourite with the Beavers, and completed the International Activity badge, which also involved eating! This term we’ve been really fortunate to have met some interesting people. In January Michelle from The Little Honey Bee Company came down to talk to us about bee keeping, and then returned to show us how to make candles from beeswax. The Beavers really enjoyed getting ‘hands on’ with her bee-keeping equipment and creating their own designs on their candles. Following this we had a trip to New Malden Fire Station where the officers from Blue Watch showed us all around the station and allowed the Beavers to clamber aboard a fire engine. Most fun was had outside when they had the chance to use the hose, under the close supervision of a Fire Officer as the force of it almost lifted the smallest Beavers off their feet! We’re looking forward to catching up with the Officers when they visit our fair in the summer. As always, it’s been great to welcome new Beavers into the Colony, all of whom are joining in with enthusiasm, and we’re pleased to see our ‘old’ Beavers enjoying the next part of their Scouting journey in Cubs.

Cornwell Pack had a busy few months since the last R&Y, with fun activities and lots of badges being gained along the way. The Autumn term saw both Packs enjoying a joint camp at Park Farm in Banstead and a joint evening at Southwood to celebrate Fireworks night.

Sixes at the Camp were named after great Explorers and saw the Cubs learning some basic skills such as building shelters, learning semaphore signals and lighting fires. The Cubs also had the opportunity to learn archery and rifle-shooting. All of the Cubs achieved their Outdoor Challenge and Backwoods Cooking badges which saw them cooking toasties and

Backwoods Cooking badges which saw them cooking toasties and marshmallow cones in foil – yum!!

Over two nights in November both Packs headed off to the Flip Out trampoline park in Wandsworth. Thank you to Kevin from Kipling for organising and driving the minibus on our evening.

In November the Pack also spent an evening learning more about St. John’s, our parish church. Father Kevin gave the Cubs a tour of the Church, answering lots of questions along the way! The Cubs then completed a quiz to see how much they had learnt! Our thanks go to Father Kevin Scott for giving up his evening!

At Christmas we enjoyed making some Christmas crafts and having the traditional party! Since the start of 2018 the Pack has enjoyed making pancakes, celebrating the Chinese Year of the Dog and making some tasty cookies for Mothering Sunday.

In recent months the Cubs have been working on their Communicator, Personal Safety, Artist and Our Skills Challenge badges.

As part of the Our Skills Challenge badge the Cubs made some models from all sorts of recycled materials and learnt how to sew on a badge, iron their scarf and make a cup of tea. We would like to thank local nurse Lynne Bristo for coming and giving the Cubs lots of helpful ideas on how to keep healthy

and eating the right food.

Recently the Cubs have earned their Hobbies badge and we had a really interesting evening hearing about the wide range of activities that the Cubs get up to in their spare time! These activities included clay pigeon shooting, horse riding, picture card collecting, playing various musical instruments, baking and mosaic foam art. What a talented bunch!!

During the Autumn term we welcomed 7 new faces into the Pack; Gabriella Pettifer-Rising, Kaidyn Mann, Oliver Lamb, Pippa Linstead, Anya Bole, Anfisa Betts and Jayden Hoad,. At the start of 2018 we have welcomed 4 more new faces; Gabriel El Mrabet, Matthias Poelzl, Lilia Fuggles and Oliver Mitchell.

Over the last few months I have been very proud to be able to present the top award in Cub Scouting: The Chief Scout’s Silver Award to Nathaniel, Dominic, Beau, Otto, Damian and Evan before they moved on to life in the Troop. We were sorry to see them go but wish them well in the future and say thank you for being a part of Cornwell Pack.

In the months ahead we will be completing our Air Activities 1 & 2 badges (including a visit from Midair Models) and visiting Hollywood Bowl at Tolworth. We are also planning a weekend at PGL in September with Kipling Pack.

Finally, thank you to all the leadership team at Cornwell; Sean, Kristie, Rosie, Alex & Eloise for helping me to provide great Cub Scouting for all our young people every week.

Kipling joined up with Cornwell to end the summer off with a fantastic camp at Park Farm in Banstead, during camp there where many activities including shooting, archery, den building and backwoods cooking. The camp allowed those attending to earn there Our Outdoor Challenge Badge as well as Nights Away. In the run up to Christmas we have been working towards the Our Skills Challenge badge and the Communicator Badge, we also participated in the District Camp Fire at Polyapes, and we had our own Campfire with Cornwell pack at Southwood for Halloween & Bonfire night celebrations. We also had some fun bouncing around at Flipout Trampoline park. This year we started off working towards the Personal safety badge. This year for pancake day we tried our hands at some pancake art. For Mother’s Day the kids got creative making a small nail board heart. We are now working on our Air Activities 1 & 2 and will be making some model planes among other activities and hopefully planning a trip to an Air Museum. Unfortunately, due to work commitments Charlie has now stopped helping at Cubs, we are lucky to have Daisy McCallum come along and help out in his place, and as ever I must say a big thank you to them and to Nic Youster and Jackie Moore for all the help they provide.

Our program this Spring has been geared towards a troop camp, the Outdoor Challenge award and Survival Skills badge. The canvas will come out of the stores for the scouts to familiarise themselves with our different tents, and importantly, learnt how to pack them away. We'll also brush up on our pioneering techniques and Camp craft. Our Patrols have spent a few evenings concentrating on 'team building' and learning to work in theirpatrols. We've also had our annual 'Chinese New Year' celebrations with fortune cookies & Chinese themed games. Most importantly, the scouts have plenty of time just to 'let off steam', play games, and make lots of noise and whilst running about. The leadership team will put its heads together for the Summer program, provisionally it's looking pretty hectic with lots of mucking about, having a few laughs, burning stuff and playing in the woods. Finally, thanks to all the usual supporters, it doesn't happen without you.

Callum Grant, Troop Leader

Titan Explorers have had a busy programme of activities with skating at Hampton Court Palace just before Christmas, and our recent winter camp as particularly memorable. A small brave group braved Walton Firs in sub zero, but sunny conditions for pioneering, rock climbing, frisbee golf and other activities... including flying a drone with Kevin the toy turtle on top!

Using Your Talents to Support our Scout Group Our biggest challenge in 1st Old Malden is getting enough adults to share their time and talents.

Our Active Support group – Aurora is a brilliant way for adults of all ages to volunteer on a flexible basis. It’s the best of both worlds - it fits around your commitments, helps you to use your individual talents and volunteer with your friends. This additional support enables our uniformed leaders provide the best possible Scouting for the young people in 1st Old Malden.

Even if you have never been involved in Scouting before your contribution will allow us to deliver yet more events, opportunities and programmes.

What does Active Support do?

The answer is anything that supports Scouting at 1st Old Malden. Active Support is a way for adults to volunteer some time to Scouting in a flexible way that suits them. Scout Active Support is a resource for section leaders to use in whichever way is required. The ways that Active Support can aid the Group are almost endless; below are a few examples.

Sanding and staining the floor at the Scout Centre Driving the Mini-bus Maintenance of the Fair Equipment Helping to organise a Fundraising event Parent Helper at an event

Active Support welcomes anyone aged 18 and over and of all interests, abilities and backgrounds. There is no requirement to have been involved in Scouting or Guiding before joining. All that is required is a willingness to volunteer some time to support our Scout Group.

How can I help?

Please just drop me an email ([email protected]) with your contact details and how you think you can support the Group. I’ll maintain a list of everyone who can help, and their particular talents so that the uniformed leaders can call upon us when required.

ANOTHER YOUNG LEADER BUCKLE AWARDED

Congratulations to Matthew Denney, member of Titan ESU and Young Leader with the Troop. Matthew has completed his Young Leader training and back in December was presented with his Certificate and Young Leader Buckle by Neil Findlay, our District Commissioner. As well as being one of our Explorers and enjoying his own Scouting, Matthew helps every week with the Scout Troop. All of the Young Leaders across 1OM are valued by our Adult Leaders and have fun helping out with the younger sections.

CALLING ALL OLDER SCOUTS — once you move up to Titan you can also become a Young Leader and help in another section. (ideally you should have left the Troop for at least 6 months before you go back to help as a Young Leader). You will receive regular training in Leadership, Programming Planning, Organising and Running Games, Record Keeping, sharing your Scouting Knowledge and lots more and you will have fun doing it! It all counts towards other Awards such as your Queen’s Scout Award and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Why don’t you have a chat with Matthew next time you are at Scouts and ask him about it, or you can contact me Jenny McCallum, 07958 339440 [email protected].

Back in July, the parents of our Winnipeg Beavers and the Group presented gifts to Hannah & Sharon to say a big thank you for all their hard work with the Colony. We will miss them both but look forward to seeing them again when they can pop in to say hello.

We were delighted to be invited to 'cut the ribbon' at the new Co Op store at Shannon Corner. It was a great way to say "Thank You" to the Co Op for the funding we are receiving as one of their Local Community Fund causes.

Congratulations to Charlie Howes, member of Titan ESU and a Young Leader with Kipling Pack, for being awarded the District's "Warry Trophy For Endeavour' at our AGM. This is very well deserved and everyone at 1OM is very proud of him. Charlie is pictured with Margaret Warry, who donated the magnificent trophy of St. George and the Dragon to the District.

It's always great to acknowledge the commitment of our leaders, so we were delighted to see Richard, Explorer leader of Titan, presented with his Long Service Award for 15 years service. Thank you for giving up your time for our young people, Richard.

Please could you help the leaders by returning all forms by the deadlines stated. We’re all working parents as well, and we don’t always have the time to chase up late replies, or add children to events that are organised by other people. Thank you!
