Trapped by Addiction: Finding the Way OutEscape from the destructive effects of addiction can seem impossible to children and families trapped by alcohol abuse, addiction to prescription medications, and illegal drug use.

4th Annual Conference

About The Unforgettables FoundationIn response to the need of at risk and financially challenged families, The Unforgettables Foundation was

founded in 1999 by Chaplain Tim Evans at Loma Linda University in partnership with Inland Empire clergy, educators, medical professionals, social workers and morticians.

The Foundation’s mission is to assist

low-income families by providing the necessary resources for an appropriate burial for their children. The Foundation conducts a number of programs that empower communities to memorialize children who have died and to educate parents and caregivers about the risks to children’s health, safety and wholeness.

Requests for aid typically come from hospitals, social service agencies, and families themselves. Over the past 17 years, over 5,000 families in 80 cities throughout Southern California have received assistance from The Unforgettables Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operated almost entirely by volunteers and supported exclusively by philanthropic gifts.

For all causes of childhood death and from ages 18 years down to 32 weeks gestation, The Unforgettables provides comfort and financial assistance to grieving families throughout the region and works closely with local mortuaries on the family’s behalf. The Foundation serves an average of six famiies in crisis per week.

There is no deeper grief than the tragic loss of a child. It can have a devastating effect on the entire family. Whether caused by illness, accident or murder, a child’s death also brings crushing financial pressures on families with limited resources. All too often, these families cannot afford the cost of a simple funeral and burial or cremation.

About the Conference

Mitchell MoralesBoard Chair, 2017

Timothy Evans, CFREFounder/CEO

Welcome! We wish you an “unforgettable” day at our 4th annual Children and Families in Crisis educational summit here in Palm Desert. For the past 18 years, the Foundation has made it possible for over 5,000 financially challenged families to give their child a dignified funeral. We also remain committed to the goal of educating community professionals and students about dangers that can lead to the death of children.

We sincerely thank our Title, Silver, and Bronze level sponsors that are listed on the back cover. Our gratitude extends to the many donors, community partners, and collaborating professionals who have enthusiastically spread the word about this conference. This is truly a helping community coming together! About Today’s Conference: Addiction has often been described by those afflicted as a “personal hell.” Inevitably, the disease of addiction expands its destructiveness to families, and to the many environments where addicted individuals live their lives—the classroom, the church, the neighborhood, the workplace, and beyond. Whether or not the addiction is being addressed professionally, a multitude of healing strategies are available to those who interact with people struggling with addiction. The conference will assist those in the helping professions to better understand the mechanisms that lead to and sustain addiction. Attendees will learn methods to manage the damaging “fallout” that accompanies the disease. Financial, emotional, physical, and a myriad of other consequences combine to destroy otherwise productive, joyful lives when addiction intrudes. Professional help is always appropriate, but skillfully supporting and encouraging recovery on the part of others who interact with addicted individuals and their families can make a profound difference.

New Foundation Developments in the Coachella Valley: Kimberly Krause, coordinating today’s conference with Tim Evans, is also leading the formation of The Unforgettables Foundation of the Coachella Valley. She first learned of The Unforgettables as a Memorial Counselor at Forest Lawn and witnessed what a blessing it was to financially challenged families when The Unforgettables helped pay for children’s funerals. The desert now has a group that meets monthly and has recently coordinated the first Unforgettable “Biggest Hearts” Breakfast honoring over 30 regional charity leaders. We welcome the Coachella Valley volunteers who join us to fulfill the Foundation’s critical mission here in the Valley.

20/20 Vision CampaignThe Unforgettables Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Redlands, CA, will be 20 years old in 2020. In response to the desire of other communities in the United States and Canada to replicate the Unforgettables’ mission and programs, our Foundation has embarked on a bold vision of outreach and service to families who have lost a child. Currently the Coachella Valley, Michigan, and Ohio are areas actively working on exploring chapter membership. The Unforgettables Foundation of Southern Nevada was created in 2015.

Please join in support of the 20/20 VISION CAMPAIGN by pledging your financial support or inquiring

about starting an affiliate chapter in your community. Among our leadership donors are John and Judy Austin of La Quinta CA, long-time supporters and former board members of The Unforgettables Foundation, who generously pledged $100,000 in honor of their beloved daughter, Summer Rae Austin, who died in an auto accident.

Gifts of cash, stock, real estate, charitable trusts, and other planned legacy vehicles will be greatly appreciated. To make a donation or inquire about gift opportunities, contact Foundation CEO Chaplain Timothy Evans at 909-335-1600 or [email protected].

• Establish 20 Unforgettables chapter affiliates • Grow the number of families helped annually to 2,020• Build combined annual operating income for all Unforgettables chapter affiliates to $2,000,000 by 2020

The Summer Austin AwardTwenty years ago, John and Judy Austin lost their beloved 20-year-old daughter to an automobile accident. Summer Rae Austin was a sophomore at Baylor University and active in her church and local charities, including National Charity League. Out of this terrible tragedy, her parents have sought to bring, as the Bible says, “beauty out of ashes.” Over a decade, the Austins have quietly helped countless other grieving families through their exceedingly generous support of The Unforgettables Foundation, as well as other charities that their daughter supported. They do so, as Judy explains, “to honor her memory and the large heart she had. It is a parent’s wish that their children not be forgotten.”

5th District Supervisor Marion AshleyToday, in honor of the Austins, and in memory of their daughter Summer, The Unforgettables Foundation proudly bestows its highest honor on 5th District Supervisor Marion Ashley. Ashley, a native of Riverside County and member of a pioneer Perris Valley family, has long shown his deep commitment to the people of Riverside County. He has worked for decades to improve the lives of his fellow citizens. Since his election to the Riverside County Board of Supervisors in 2002, he has become a respected leader on regional issues. As a County Supervisor he oversees a budget of $5.3 billion and sets public policy for over 2.4 million people.

With Deep Appreciation To Our Patrons And VolunteersThe wonderful work and accomplishments of The Unforgettables Foundation would not be possible without the extraordinary talents and commitment of hundreds of volunteers and the generosity of our donors and event sponsors. This year’s conference sponsors appear on the program back cover.

Since the first memorial walk in 2000, thousands of parents,

siblings, grandparents, and community members, businesses and organizations throughout the region have joined with The Unforgettables to remember and reflect on the lives and journeys of children and the place they have in our hearts forever—in life and in death. Together, we share the sorrow of families who have experienced the painful loss of a child, and we recognize those who work to heal, rescue and save children at risk.

Please join us at the conclusion of the conference today, as the names of 85 Riverside County children lost this past year are read from the podium. After brief comments inside the Indian Wells Theater, family members and conference attendees will adjourn outdoors with candles for a final blessing and release of doves symbolic of each child’s heavenly journey.

Memorial flags for today’s ceremony were created by Albert Angelo, MSEd, the college’s health educator, and students from California State University San Bernardino, Palm Desert campus.

One of Mr. Angelo’s initiatives is raising awareness of the problem of suicide on college campuses, and developing programs to aid students affected by the suicide of peers.
