Brighton & Hove City Council operates 6 childcare settings in the city. They are based in Children's Centres and provide high quality care and activities for babies and children aged 0 to 5 years. Our nurseries include: Acorn Nursery, Bright Start Nursery, Cherry Tree Nursery, Jump Start Nursery, Roundabout Nursery and Tarnerland Nursery School.

We are looking for qualified Early Years practitioners to provide ad hoc cover for short and longer term staff absences and 1:1 support for individual children.

You must have experience working with the Early Years Foundation Stage in a childcare/nursery setting which can be from a placement or trainee role. You must also have experience providing care and education to children from a wide range of backgrounds, including those with special educational needs. Essential skills include being flexible to cope with changing needs and demands, good literacy and communication skills, the ability to develop good working relationships with parents, staff and other service providers. The job also requires you to have the ability to co-operate and adhere to health and safety policy, practices and instruction.

Duties include running activities both inside and outside the nursery, participating in the key person system which means taking responsibility for a group of children and recording and reporting on their progress. You will follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and other appropriate legislation and guidance for young children and prepare and serve food, milk, drinks and snacks to children, encourage good nutrition and sociable eating, assist children with personal care including changing nappies, assisting with toileting and other associated welfare duties and carrying out ongoing cleaning of the nursery.

The Early Childhood Project is a unique educational charity. Our Toy Library service was founded in 1988. We specialise in equalities, family support and positive parenting and work across the city. Based at Tarner Children's Centre, we are commissioned to deliver good quality play and family support through drop-in play sessions for pre-schoolers and their parents/carers.

Applicants must have recent experience of practical play/care work with children in a GROUP setting and be used to working with groups of parents and carers to encourage participation. They must have good communication skills, verbal and written and a practical approach to working co-operatively with other workers and volunteers in various venues across the city.They must have knowledge of equalities and inclusion issues, child development aged 0-8, the EYFS and be able to signpost to other services, advice and information where relevant.

The role involves working alone or with a co-worker to facilitate family support and play drop-in sessions at community venues in partnership with other agencies. Duties will include supporting the work of volunteers in the toy library and encouraging the use of the toy library resources by families, childminders, pre-schoolers and other carers. The work involves planning, preparing and running art/craft activities, leading group storytime and singing at drop-in sessions.
