Brighton & Hove City Council operates 6 childcare settings in the City. All our nurseries are based in Children Centres, have been judged by Ofsted to be either 'good' or 'outstanding' and provide high quality care and learning for children aged from three months to five years.

We are looking for apprenticeships to join our teams of well qualified and experienced colleagues, who are skilled in meeting the individual needs of the children. Applicants must have the ability to communicate with children, parents and professional, be able to work effectively in a team and have good written English skills. Applicants must as a minimum have Maths & English at GCSE 'C' pass or higher, or equivilent qualifications. We are looking for people who have a keen interest in the learning and development of the children, their families and the nursery and who have a professional approach to work, including good time keeping and a responsible attitude.

Duties include running indoor and outdoor activities which encourage creativity, development, co-ordination, independence, self expression and learning through play. You will record and report on children's progress following the Early Years Foundation Stage, prepare and serving milk, drinks and snacks to the children, encourage good nutrition and sociable eating, assist children with personal care, including changing nappies, assisting with toileting and other associated welfare duties and you will also carry out ongoing cleaning of the nursery.

Training and a full induction will be provided and adapted to meet the skills and knowledge of the successful candidates and a secure and stimulating learning environment will be provided There may be opportunities for career progression once qualified.

The Early Childhood Project is a unique educational charity. Our Toy Library service was founded in 1988. We specialise in equalities, family support and positive parenting and work across the city. Based at Tarner Children's Centre, we are commissioned to deliver good quality play and family support through drop-in play sessions for pre-schoolers and their parents/carers.

Applicants must have recent experience of practical play/care work with children in a GROUP setting and be used to working with groups of parents and carers to encourage participation. They must have good communication skills, verbal and written and a practical approach to working co-operatively with other workers and volunteers in various venues across the city.They must have knowledge of equalities and inclusion issues, child development aged 0-8, the EYFS and be able to signpost to other services, advice and information where relevant.

The role involves working alone or with a co-worker to facilitate family support and play drop-in sessions at community venues in partnership with other agencies. Duties will include supporting the work of volunteers in the toy library and encouraging the use of the toy library resources by families, childminders, pre-schoolers and other carers. The work involves planning, preparing and running art/craft activities, leading group storytime and singing at drop-in sessions.

This post is a 6 month contract ending 31.3.12 subject to a funding review. The 25 hour post can be divided in to one post of 12 hours per week and the other 15 hours per week so job sharers welcome to apply. The post can also be term time only if prefered.

Youth and Play Work Volunteer Opportunities

Training Programme

Youth work is aimed at young people 13 to 19 years of age (24 years for young people with special needs) and Play Work is aimed at young people 4 to 11 years of age (16 years for young people with special needs)

If you are 18+ and would like to volunteer to work with children and young people in any of Brighton & Hove City Council's Youth and Play Service settings, then you may want to attend our Volunteer Training Programme. The programme runs over 15 hours and provides a basic introduction to the Brighton & Hove Youth and Play Service. All sessions must be attended to successfully complete the programme. The programme is aimed at adults with no relevant qualification.

The next Introductory Session is Thursday 3rd November, 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Jubilee Library. After attending the Introduction Session you will choose to go on to complete either the Youth or Play Work Training Programmes, both will take place Saturday 19th November and Saturday 26th November, 9.30 till 4pm at different venues.

The Youth Work Programme will cover the volunteer agreement, young people's needs and issues, procedures, protocols and relationships (including safeguarding), the core values of youth work, equality - challenging discrimination, prejudice and bullying.

The Play Work Programme ‘Time to Play’ covers; supporting children’s play, playing for everyone equal opportunities, health and safety awareness, child protection and teamwork.
