Child Safe Environment Policy (Overview) Purpose Our Child Safe Environments Policy Overview sets out the school’s approach to creating a child safe organisation where children and young people are safe and feel safe. It provides the policy framework for the school’s approach to the Child Safe Standards. Child Safe Environment Policy (Overview) Purpose

Our Child Safe Environments Policy Overview sets out the school’s approach to creating a child safe organisation where children and young people are safe and feel safe. It provides the policy framework for the school’s approach to the Child Safe Standards.

Provide written guidance on appropriate conduct and behaviour towards children6. Engage only the most suitable people to work with children, have high quality staff and volunteer supervision and professional development7. Ensure children know who they can talk with if they are worried or are feeling unsafe They are encouraged to raise such issues immediately8. Report suspected abuse, neglect or mistreatment promptly to the appropriate authorities9. Share information appropriately and lawfully with other organisations where the safety and wellbeing of children is at risk10.Value the input of and communicate regularly with families and carers.

OverviewPolicy and procedures

Policies and procedures outlining Belvedere Park Primary School’s approach to the Child Safe Standards are outlined below. For further information, please contact the school’s Principal or Assistant Principal.

A child-safe culture

Belvedere Park Primary School’s culture of care and empathy encourages staff to discuss and act on concerns making it more difficult for abuse to occur or remain hidden.

Roles and Responsibilities/Code of Conduct

Our school management team will ensures that each person understands their role, responsibilities and behaviour expected in protecting children and young people from abuse and neglect during Induction, staff meetings and ongoing throughout the year. Staff will comply with the school’s Code of Conduct. Our school’s Code of Conduct clearly outlines the difference between appropriate and inappropriate behaviour. Refer to the VIT, Victorian Teachers Professional Codes of Conduct and Ethics.

Human resources practices and training

Belvedere Park Primary School has adopted the procedures suggested by VRQA/DHHS for recruitment and screening of staff, and will take all reasonable steps to ensure that it engages the most suitable and appropriate people for employment. We ensure that staff induction, education and training programs meet our commitment to safeguarding children and young people from abuse and neglect. All prospective staff and volunteers are required to provide proof of a successful National Criminal History Records check VIT Registration) or a valid Working with Children Check and to maintain the currency of the check appropriate to their position. Identity will be cross checked with either a driver’s licence or passport.

Reporting

Our school has clear expectations for staff and volunteers in makinga report about a child or young person who may be in need of protection. (inc Mandatory Reporting) Immediate action should include reporting their concerns to the DHHS Child Protection or another appropriate agency and notifying the principal or a member of the school leadership team of their concerns and the reasons for those concerns.

Risk Reduction

Our school supports the wellbeing of children and young people and is ensures proper risk management processes. The school minimises potential risks to children and young people by taking a risk management approach through active establishment of appropriate preventative measures.

Active Listening

Our school has a safe, inclusive and supportive environment that involves respect for student voice and respectful support of parents/care givers. We encourage child and parent/care giver involvement and engagement in the context of our school’s policies, procedures and ethos and actively build the capacity of children and parents/care givers to respond appropriately within their rights and responsibilities.

Our school is committed to safe-guarding the confidentiality and privacy of children and their families through the careful collection, use and storage of information necessary to meet our obligations.
