ProgramNote

Child Moon began with a phone call from Patrick Reynolds, conductor of the University of Dayton Symphonic WindEnsemble.He,alongwithPeggyTaulbee,wasinterestedincommissioningaworktohonorthelifeofPeggy’slatedaughter,LeslieTaulbeeWaddell.Igraciouslyaccepted,thoughIwasunsureofhowIwouldgoaboutwritingsuchapiece.

Fortunately,PeggyandPatricksharedmuchaboutLeslie.Ilearnedofherpassionforlifeaswellasherdeepconnectiontomusic(LeslieplayedtrumpetintheUniversityofDaytonSymphonicWindEnsemble,whilehermotherhasplayedfluteforyears).Mostimportantly,though,Ilearnedofherloveforhertwoyoungdaughters,EliseandEmma.AfterLeslie’spassing,herdaughterscontinuedtospeakwithherwhenevertheysawthemoon.Intheireyes,themoonwasmostcertainlyheaven.

ThistouchingstoryofthegirlsandthemoonstuckwithmeasIbegantoformulateideasforthework.Ataboutthesametime I rather serendipitously discovered Carl Sandburg’s poem,ChildMoon. Besides the obvious connection to Elise andEmma, the imagery inChildMoon helpedmeclarifymy thoughts and feelings at a timewhen Iwas struggling todo so.Further,thepoetryassistedwiththestructureofthecomposition:onelastconversationbetweenmotheranddaughter.

Thechild’swonderAttheoldmoonComesbacknightly.ShepointsherfingerTothefarsilentyellowthingShiningthroughthebranchesFilteringontheleavesagoldensand,Cryingwithherlittletongue,“Seethemoon!”AndinherbedfadingtosleepWithbabblingsofthemoononherlittlemouth.
