Reminiscent of the film ‘You’ve Got Mail’ with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, Eppinghas its own version: a small shop’s survival against a massive book retailer. Lorna Clark, owner of the Epping Bookshop for the last 33 years, is not happy: WHSmith has just opened a book shop in the same High Street. Feeling there isn’tenough business for two shops, she is determined to maintain her position. EppingBookshop is already established, offers incredible discounts, extra benefits and moreespecially, caters to the local and loyal community – we visited a local businessowner. It is Saturday night and you are thinking – where should you go for dinner? Shouldyou buy a curry or maybe go out for a pizza? If these questions are swirling throughyour mind and you cannot decide where to eat, there is a hub of different restaurantsthat you can visit in Loughton High Street with a full and exciting range ofinternational cuisine. A whole selection of different style culinary restaurants, cafesand coffee shops that serve food and beverages from around the world – we take alook at life on Loughton High Street.

Enjoy your issue and let’s hope for some sun!

Feels incredible thatwe are coming up tonearly half-waythrough 2012. Seems

like only a few months agosince we were toasting in 2012as a new year and THE year, for Olympics GB.

Although there is a greatdeal of excitement about theOlympics, for most us withinthis magazine’s readership(living only 20 minutes awayfrom Stratford) issimultaneous concern for thealready struggling CentralLine – how will it cope withthe onslaught of all thesevisitors on our terra firma, onthe already fragileunderground? Allegedly the

service, should be capable oftransporting us into the Cityand West End but frequently, there is trouble with the line ifthere is snow or leaves; signalproblems/failure, dodgy trainsand overcrowding resulting inmultiple delays. Every time, Ibrace myself for West Endmeetings, I know that to besafe, is to allow a lot of extratime … so to travel regularly, must be difficult. e last timeI trekked into London, therewas a problem with a faultydoor. Everybody kicked out atLeytonstone and onto analready, packed train. Trainswhich promise Hainault viaNewbury Park, can turn into

Epping or Debden (byannouncement) atLeytonstone. You may thinkyou know where you’re going –but trains – like allegedly somewomen – can be known tochange their minds! At worstand per usual, we can alwayswatch the Olympics on thetelevision. Hopefully as only ashort distance from the action,we shouldn’t have anyproblems with signals! Otherthan if our satellite providers, let us down…

So what other highlights inEssex? e Apprentice – ‘FlipIt in Essex’ shown on 2ndMay. As the apprentices, stockup on fake tan from awarehouse, comments aboundabout Essex and fake tans…sadly, the jokes were on us, asthe fake tans sold incrediblywell. Scenes of Romfordmarket, Ilford shopping centreand Pitsea (personally, Ithought a bit of a daft move)as market trader banter andselling technique, wowed thepunters! Five minute wonderinsects, were snapped up bykids, then the inevitable andedge of your seat stuff, as LordSugar makes his you're fireddecision. Would it be Jade? Orwould it be Azhar? Tom toowas brought back to theboardroom but it wasunanimous – he shouldn’t havebeen there. Jade, like moths inthe spring, was somewhat

swatable – but it was Azhar that had the infamous fingerpointed in his direction.

So if Olympics don’t excite– brace yourself for theEurovision contest –scheduled for 26th May. Havelistened to some of the entriesand to those who don’t know –Engelbert Humperdinck(remember him?) will besinging ‘Love Will Set YouFree’. On the other hand,Norway’s entry, Tooji singing‘Stay’ is much better. A catchysong, a fascinating danceroutine and he certainly hasmy ‘douze points’ (12 pointsand maximum). e Germanyentry (Roman Lob) is prettygood too. e French song‘Echo’ has a rather strangevideo and I couldn’t quitematch the lyrics with thevisuals. Will I watch theprogramme? Only if I haveabsolutely nothing else to doand that includes alternativeviewing from a choice ofapproximately 500 Skychannels…

Here’s hoping floodwarnings are replaced withsunshine!... Happy Reading!Michelle

Reminiscent of the film ‘You’ve Got Mail’ with Meg Ryanand Tom Hanks, Epping has its own version: a smallshop’s survival against a massive book retailer.

Lorna Clark, owner of the Epping Bookshop for the last 33years, is not happy: WH Smith has just opened a book shop inthe same High Street. Feeling there isn’t enough business for twoshops, she is determined to maintain her position.

Epping Bookshop is already established, offers incrediblediscounts, extra benefits and more especially, caters to the localand loyal community. MH: What are comments from customers about WH Smithopening in the same street?LC: at WH Smith is not an independent bookshop. MH: What else do you offer aside books?LC: We recently went to Birmingham Gift Fair to source newlines. Stocking gifts, jigsaws, we’ve commissioned pictures ofEpping Forest, retro pictures on mugs which can ONLY bebought at our shop. WH Smith cannot offer these extra andexclusive lines.MH: And do you have special deals with major publishers?LC: Yes. Penguin deals such as 3 for 2 in the classics and newjacketed books. We have an agreement with Collins for GEMS,and as part of our incentive to retain our loyal clientele, weregularly discount hardbacks and for the last 10 years, we havehad discount weekends where people can buy 20% off any book instock. We have a database of over 1,000 customers and weregularly host author events.MH: Do you have a stock of classics? And how long does it taketo order a book from you?LC: We have an excellent core stock of classics. When we order, the book is delivered the following day whereas with WHS – itmay take longer.MH: What about customer service? As an independent bookstore, do you feel your customer service is better?LC: Yes and definitely. We have had staff for 20-30 years. We areexperienced within the trade. We all feel a great affinity withbooks and go that extra mile to ensure a great customer service

and working relationship with our clients. For instance, we ordera lot of books that can’t be obtained – or are second-hand or outof print. Carl Belle ownsthe localfranchise ofBelvoirLettings, based

in Gants Hill. Modest, quietand reserved, he is also highlyapproachable and widelyrespected within hisprofessional capacity as a local, letting agent. Yet despite hisrelaxed demeanour, Carl, through his church andbecause of his conscience andsense of purpose, gives hope tothose who need support, guidance and inspiration…

MH: Having heard your 10minutes session at ChigwellBusiness Group, I wasfascinated to learn about yourvoluntary work as part ofFCENS (Forest ChurchesEmergency Night Shelter).Tell me more about this workand how it started?CB: I was at church and theywere looking for volunteers forthe night shelter. Not enoughmen were getting involvedbecause it necessitated stayingthe night. So I volunteered forthe shifts that nobody elsewanted to do. I felt as if Iwanted to give somethingback. MH: And do you think thereis a link between yourprofessional work and thehomeless?

CB: Absolutely. You meetpeople that you can help – andsometimes those you can’t.With this work, it enables meto extend myself to help those,I can’t help professionally.ere are people living out ofblack bags: they need real help, food, shelter, somewhere tosleep. ings we take forgranted like keeping clean, aroof… (Carl pauses forthought) somewhere to feelsafe and secure… Sadly, theshelter should be temporary, but sometimes you see thesame people, year after year. Inreality, it should be just a step, not a lifestyle. But nobodyshould judge – especially inthis current, economic climate.MH: How is this workthrough the church?CB: Some of the mostimportant fundamentals ofChristianity are to be kind andunderstanding. We shouldn’tlabel somebody because oftheir situation – just help themif they need it. My businesssphere gives me certainopportunities but my workthrough the church, helps meto embrace higher and morespiritual ideals which enrichmy life, on a different level.MH: You also support thePrison Ministry. Can you tellme about this work?CB: ere are two ministries.

One is for young offenders –so for this one, we go toRochester Prison. We willhave a normal church serviceand we try to make aconnection without preaching. We listen to the men talk –give hope… ey are youngoffenders aged 17-21. Weshouldn’t write them off atsuch a young age. ere’s a lotof negativity in prison – we tryand inspire them to want abetter life – to learn fromtheir mistakes and to hearsomething positive – that theyshould want more and betterfor their futures.MH: Who inspires you withthis work?CB: Des Brown, the youthpastor who organises the

prison ministry. He was thereas a young offender but wasgiven hope and from this, hewas able to turn his lifearound. He now helps others. He’s my inspiration and it is aprivilege to work alongside him.

APPRECIATINGTHE MOMENT

Having been anenthusiastic golfer forthe past 30 years and

had the pleasure of playingwith several Ryder Cupplayers, two of which werenumber one in the worldrankings, the one thing golfhas taught me is that nothingis forever. No matter how goodthings seem to be going thereis always that bad shot or poorputt that can bring you back toearth. e main thing is to begrateful for the times thingsare going well and as I lectureconstantly to my family –appreciate the moment. It waslovely to see our office favoriteRonnie O’Sullivan’s brillianceif not genius return last weekwhen winning his 4th worldchampionship and particularlywarming to hear him repeatmy very words of how he was‘appreciating the moment’.Let’s hope it is a mantra thatwill remain with him for along time.

I apply this attitude inbusiness too, which helps meenormously to adjust todisappointment. As you willappreciate in my business wehave many disappointmentsbut unlike some, we are notjust disappointed when salesdo not proceed to full fruition,we are disappointed in thereaction of some people ingeneral. Bearing in mind, aswith all agents, we are onlypaid in the event of success. ere is never any charge forour advice and thereby all whoapproach us for this receive thebenefit of our experience freeand totally without obligation.

It is therefore mostdisappointing when certainpeople not only go back ontheir word or renege on their

promises but fail to apologizefor having done so or, in thecase of several potential clientsrecently, blatantly ignore ourcalls and emails requestingsome justification for theirdeceit or rudeness! It isextremely tempting for me toname and shame theseindividuals here and now orthrough Facebook and Twitterbut in negative terms I willwait to savor that moment.

Now with that little moan

out of the way let’s take alook at what’s going on inour little local propertyworld. What we call stock, that is the numbers ofproperties for sale or to letat a given time, is farbelow our usual numbersfor this time of year. Iwould say that we are

down by a good 50% in bothproperty registers. As the onlylocal agents with a sole agencyonly policy for properties forsale, (even if it’s only for aslittle as four weeks) ourproperty register is alwaysfewer than that of our fellowagents. e benefit of thispolicy to us is that everyonelooking for a local home mustvisit our website in order thatthey do not miss out a sectionof the market. e astute

sellers recognize this as theyalso understand that we havemore time to devote tomarketing their home and thatwe can continue to regularlyadvertise the property until asale results. is only applies ofcourse to sales. For withlettings our terms are the sameas any other letting agents.

Because all types ofproperty are now in shortsupply prices are holding upand although many owners aresticking firm to their quotedprices, there are, however, several who are ‘taking a view’.ey are prepared to listen torealistic offers enabling themto complete their plans andmove and get on with theirlives. Which after all was theinitial purpose of the exercise.Others, who are still quotingfigures in line with their overoptimistic opinions of value, are hoping that the next twomonths which have beenhistorically known as primeselling time, will encouragethose actively seeking a newhome to take a more bullishview. Let’s hope that they areright. In this day and age, however, as a gambler Icertainly would not bet on it.As a golfer however I wouldbe happy to play them formoney at any time.

Being at home is such an easy option. Television,Xbox, playing on computer, DVDs, SKPYE, somany reasons not to go out or be part of thecommunity… It is a fact that children are gettingobese through lack of exercise and that feeling of

‘community spirit’ is not the same as the 1950s, 1960s or even1970s. Most people keep to themselves and unfortunately, a lotof us don’t even know our neighbours!

Getting out, socialising (especially for youngsters) is soimportant and not just at school. For mothers with new babiestoo, despite the hassle of getting out of the house (and there is nodenying, it’s a stressful procedure!) is essential. Both for thewell-being of the mother, to give respite from being at home witha baby/child but to also spend time, sharing experiences withother women in a similar position.

The 315 berth marina at Roydon Marina Village has now beenopen for its first year. Over the past 12 months nearly half of themoorings have been filled and a vibrant community hasdeveloped amongst the berth holders.

Impressed by the tranquil settings and excellent facilities many are stillsurprised to find they even exist in this part of rural Essex. Approached bya road that runs alongside the Stort Navigation, abundant with wildlife, thefirst glimpse of the park is an old mill house, now converted into flats, and aweir pool. Follow the road around to the car park and you will find theirhotel and “Hendersons”, the on site bar and restaurant.

Roydon Marina Village has undergone extensive development over thelast couple of years which has cost in the region of £10M. e “Village” ispart of a collection of holiday lodges, residential properties and inlandmarina berths. Owners are also invited to make full use of the onsitefacilities such as laundrette, hotel, bar, restaurant and waterside cafe. e315 berth marina is set in 65 acres of tranquil countryside and is accessedthrough the newest lock on the Stort Navigation in over 100 years.

Set on a 32 acre lake amongst the stunning scenery of the Lee ValleyPark on the Stort Navigation, Roydon Marina Village is fast becomingknown as the Premier Marina for inland waterways users in the SouthEast. Boasting a range of first class facilities and friendly, enthusiastic staffdedicated to ensuring that every berth holder enjoys their time at themarina it becomes plain to see why so many short term visitors decide tomove their boats there full time. Moorings are available for Cruisers,Narrow Boats, Wide Beams and Dutch Barges and are available forovernight stays through to full time annual berths.

At the entrance to the park is Roydon station, only 30 minutes fromLondon by train, so for many, with the tranquil settings and peacefulenvironment, abundant with wildlife, it is the perfect get away from the

hustle and bustle of modern living. e marina started life as farm land which was excavated in the 1970’s

to provide stone for motorway construction in the surrounding areas. When the quarrying came to an end in the late 1980’s the quarry wasflooded by cutting channels from the bottom end of the lake to join thenearby River Stort. For the next 20 years the lake was used for swimming, fishing, water skiing, leisure boat trips and clay pigeon shooting. At onetime it also had an artificial beach and paddling pool. Construction of themarina started in October 2010 and was finished by the end of February2011.

As part of the extensive re-development a new holiday home villagehas been created with a range of show homes available to view seven days aweek. Usually the plots are purchased off plan and the experienced staff atRoydon Marina Village are able to source your perfect holiday home fromany of the major UK suppliers. All properties are bespoke built andsupplied fully furnished including sofas, beds, wardrobes, white goods anddining furniture. All aspects of the home are fully customisable withrespect to specification, layout, size and number of bedrooms. Prices suit awide range of budgets and homes can be ready to move into in as little as 8weeks from when you first place the order (depending on specification).

e holiday properties provide owners with a great opportunity for asecure long term investment, offering an average return per week of £500

and even more at peak times. Roydon MarinaVillage sublet department can offer a superb fullrental service meaning that a £160,000 home canreturn £11,200 per annum (amounts may varydependant on whether or not you holiday in thehome or rent it out all year round).

“Hendersons” is the on site bar and restaurantserving food seven nights a week and lunch onSaturdays and Sunday roasts. Popular as ameeting place for everyone on park the relaxed butlively atmosphere attracts regular visitors from thelocal village of Roydon and further afield.

Especially popular are the Friday night Fish and Chip specials and theweekend live entertainments featuring an array of talented singers, bandsand comedy acts. Tanya Marshall ,”Hendersons” complex manager , says“e continuing rise in popularity of “Hendersons” as a venue is down tothe atmosphere that has been created by having a menu that delivers highquality food at sensible prices and a team who are dedicated to creating awarm and welcoming environment whilst providing top levels of customerservice.”

“Hendersons” is also becoming well known as a wedding venue sincebeing awarded a license for performing ceremonies last year. ere are anumber of packages available to suit all budgets and some unique featuresthat no other venue can offer. A favourite amongst brides to be is arrivingon the park by boat and then having the wedding photos taken around themarina with the vibrant colours of the boats in the background. To bring aperfect end to your day Roydon Marina Village is also able to provide youwith first class accommodation ranging from the bridal suite in the hotel toa luxury log cabin with hot tub and plenty of accommodation for yourguests as well.

THE MONACO GRANDPRIX

The magic of Monaco will truly be in evidence from the

24th May when this beautiful Principality hosts formula One’s 70th Grand Prix. In the words of Graham Hill, it’s the only Grand Prix where you meet lamp-posts, trees, nightclubs, houses, hotels, curbs, gutters and boats.

For one glorious weekend in May Monaco becomes a festival of style, colour and ear-splitting noise, blended with glamourous members of the ‘jet set’ and stars of screen and stage. Remember, Cannes Film Festival is in full swing just along the coast and is the perfect warm-up act for Monaco’s Grand Prix.

We especially love Monaco during this week because it just doesn’t sleep and its vibrant atmosphere after the excitement of the racing keeps on going. Stunning cocktails, fabulous restaurants, dancing and people watching all come to the fore, but what has been missing until 2012 has been a beach party. ankfully this year the secluded beach at Larvotto will play host to the exclusive Crazy Bear Beach Party. champagne will be owing, along with great barbecue food,, and guests will be dancing to Boy George’s DJ set, Shuer,e brilliant Fun lovin Criminals and Eddie Jordan on drums with his band the Robbers. All this in addition to re, Vaudeville and burlesque dancers. What more could we ask for? Entry to this epitome of chic is on a strictly ticket only basis and numbers are limited. You need to be a part of this night to remember – I have seen what the guys at Crazy Bear are capable of and I really wouldn’t want to miss it.

TECHNOLOGY INDENTISTRYAt Smile Design By Ash, I havecreated one of the mosttechnologically advanced dentalpractices possible. A lot ofthought, effort and energy hasgone in to achieving this for onesimple reason – that any patienttreated by us will havecomfortable, high qualitydentistry that will be long lasting.Let me review some of the keyitems of equipment we use tobenefit patients.

CT SCANNER & DIGITALX-RAYSWe have installed one of thelatest and best large digital X-raymachines with a built in CTScanner. A large X-ray is veryuseful in assessing the dentalcondition when you first visit us. We also have digital X-raysystems in the treatment rooms.is technology means that theradiation dose is at a minimum, and the X-ray results are instant.e accurate X-ray images areviewed and stored on ourcomputers.

ere are only a handful ofUK practices that have a CTScanner. We have astate-of-the-art CT Scanner thatis very useful in planning forimplant dentistry. e key is tomeasure your bone veryaccurately regarding the widthand height available. ere arealso delicate anatomical structuressuch as nerves (lower jaw at theback) and sinuses (upper jaws atthe back), which are visualized in3 dimensions on a CT Scanimage. Because of this technology,we can accurately select thestrongest implants for you, thereby allowing for a long lastingresult and safe placement of theimplants in more difficult areas.

STRAUMANN IMPLANTSYSTEM We only use the StraumannImplant System, which is one ofthe leading implant systems inthe world. Straumann aresupported by ITI, which hasprobably done more research anddevelopment than any otherorganization in the world in thefield of dental implants. By usingthe best implants and relatedequipment allows us to deliverthe optimum, long lasting resultsfor our clients. So you can feelsafe and confident in having teethreplaced with implants, and weassure you the actual treatment is comfortable.

LASERS We are proud to be one of thevery few Practices in the countrythat have two types of lasermachines specifically for use indentistry. I have been on some ofthe leading laser courses in theworld, and I am a recognizedlaser trainer in the UK. Lasers areused in many ways - thetreatment is safe, painless, and effective.

Benefits of Laser Treatment Fillings without injections

or drilling! Gummy Smile correction:

A “gum lift” or reshaping of gum lines can be done non-surgically (i.e. no incisions or stitches)

Modern approach to treating gum disease

Fast, efficient and painless Excellent healing of tissues

There are many otherapplications for laser dentistryincluding: - Smile Makeovers: Lasers are

perfect for creating even gum lines to create the most attractive smile possible.

 Treatment of painful ulcers.

Uncovering tissue above wisdom teeth for improved health and hygiene (avoids extraction of these teeth, and repeat wisdom teeth infections).

Root canal treatment (the anti bacterial effect of laser energy ensures successful, longer lasting root canal fillings).

Implant dentistry: After implants have healed up, the gum tissue above them can be quickly and painlessly removed at the restorative stage of treatment.

Fraenectomy: Removal of the muscle fold for improved gum health, or in the treatment of “tongue-tie”.

JOINT VIBRATIONANALYSIS AND T SCAN Using sophisticated computersoftware called Joint VibrationAnalysis ( JVA), we check thehealth of your jaw joints. is isoften NOT checked by manydentists, and yet is the key tolong-term success in dentistry.

Your bite is also analyzed byadvanced computer diagnosticequipment (T Scan). is gives usa precise understanding of howyour teeth glide over each otherand also if you have a harmfulbite pattern. Very few UKdentists use this sophisticatedtechnology. T Scan will ensureyou have comfortable, long lastingdentistry and is great for patientswho suffer from headaches andbite related problems.

CROSS INFECTION ROOM& STERILIZATIONPROTOCOLS We have created a dedicatedroom for sterilization of ourinstruments. We are proud toalways stringently follow therecommended guidelines. Allinstruments are washed

specifically. ey are theninspected using a magnifyingviewer. After this they go in to awasher/disinfector machine. einstruments are then placed inspecial sterilization pouches andsterilized in the latest autoclavemachine. is time consumingand precise regime ensures 100%cleanliness and sterility – andpeace of mind for you!

THE DENTAL DRILLSe specialist drills we purchasedare from one of the leadingmanufacturers in the world. edrills are the very latesttechnology with built infiber-optic lights. is ensuresexcellent improved vision for thedentist by increased illuminationin dark areas of the mouth, as wellas smooth and comfortabledrilling. Using our digital wirelessheadphones and the ability foryou to select any music album inthe world, will ensure the dentalnoise of drilling will no longer bea distraction for you!

When looking ata face andtrying to makeit balanced or

more attractive to the eye, mathematics and artistry playan important part in thisprocess. Leonardo da Vincistated ‘man is proportionate’when developing drawings on the human form. Furthermore

as an aesthetic consultant, taking into considerationactors such as ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ have to betaken into consideration tohelp achieve a person reachthe goals they have set forthemselves in the way theywould like to look.

STEP 1 looking at a person’s

cheek definition, there are 9superficial fat compartmentswithin the face, when we agewe lose fat from these areas atdifferent rates, for instance onthe ‘apple of the cheek’ wetend to lose fat , but hold itwell in-between the cheek andnose area, that is when westart you see nose to mouthlines appear. Fillers such ashyaluronic acid, calcium andpoly lactic acid can all help toreshape and define the shelf ofthe face. ink of it as the areathat keeps the lower face fromsagging!

STEP 2 eyebrow shape andcurve in a woman is veryimportant to project a youthfuleye area, it helps to frame theface and lift the brow. Musclerelaxing injections can begiven as a non surgical browlift, and can take flat eyebrowsand brow to a lifted moreopened eye , more room toapply your make up, shapingyour eyebrows with threadingor waxing is important ad issemi permanent makeup forthose who have lost thepigment or have over pluckedtheir brows.

STEP 3 forehead lifting, using muscle relaxinginjections to lift the frontalismuscles and stop the browfrom looking heavy, will give ayounger smoother forehead, dermal fillers can be usedinstead of muscle relaxinginjections or in conjunction, togive the brow and forehead alift could the sunrisetechnique, which lifts andrejuvenates the forehead andbrow area.

STEP 4 opening andhydrating the eye area, again ifcrow’s feet are a problem, muscle relaxing injections cansoften the area, furthermorethe under eye area often lookstired and dark circles and ringsunder the eye are a problem.e new eye dermal rollerwith unique serums to combatthe tired look, help to lift theeyes, soften crepey lines anddrain fluid, fresher eyes arealways more youthful!

STEP 5 balance of the nose,in the centre of our face and a

prominent feature, noses thatare crooked, too downturnedall can spoil the facial balance, surgery is one option, butthere are also some nonsurgical treatments that canhelp, for noses that lookcrooked fillers can helpbalance and disguise thisproblem, downturned nosescan have muscle relaxinginjections to lift the tipslightly as well as being able totreated flared nostrils.

STEP 6 lips, as we age theoutline of our lips called thevermillion border starts tobreak down, causing lipstick tobleed and making the mouthappear aged, using products toredefine this are withoutmaking them more volumisedis possible, people e are oftenscared of having the trout poutlook, most women only wanttheir lips to appear fresher, more hydrated and defined, ifpeople have a weak top lip, then slight volume can correctthis in balance, furthermorelots more men are going forfresher lip fillers to hydrate only!

STEP 7 youthful bright skin, let’s face it if you look at ababy or young Childs skin, it’spretty amazing, plump, fulland un flawed, even skin tone.So remember if you only havefillers and muscle relaxinginjections the face is nevergoing to look amazing untilyou help with problems suchas fine lines, open pores, pigmentation, brown spots, redbroken veins and uneven skinsurface. Dermal rollers, skinpeels, microdermabrasion andintense pulsed light all canhelp with these problems, furthermore using skin careand daily spf protector willprevent these problems fromoccurring and keep your skinglowing.

No one would know that attractive and youthfullooking Nicola Smith had battled with whatshe calls her ‘fangs’ all her life. ConfidentNicola, a woman about town who runs ademanding insurance business, had been selfconscious about her teeth since childhood.

en she met cosmetic dentist Ash Parmar. “I think I always knew that I should have worn a brace for the

two canines which stuck out from my top teeth but somehowthey got overlooked by the dentists I visited. en, when I was17, I was told I needed a brace. It was a bolt out of the blue. Youcan imagine my response at that age - not a chance in hell.”

So for many years Nicola got on with her life, all the timehiding the deep resentment she felt about her wayward teeth.en along came Ash who attended the Chigwell BusinessGroup, a local breakfast club, while work was being carried out onSmile Design by Ash, his state of the art cosmetic dental practicein Chigwell.

Nicola, a regular at the Business Breakfast Club, was delightedwhen she heard Ash talk about 6 month smiles and how theprocess is easy and comfortable. “I switched on straight away. Atlast I had found a way to get these blasted teeth fixed.”

Nicola visited the practice where Ash talked her through theprocess explaining that crooked teeth make many people feelself-conscious, reserved, or even ashamed of their appearance.Conventional orthodontic treatment for adults can take two yearsor more but Smile Design by Ash offers the revolutionary 6Month Smiles system that achieves straight teeth much faster.e 6 Month Smile process utilises tooth coloured wires andclear brackets to gently straighten teeth in an average time of onlysix months. e key feature of the treatment is the special nickeltitanium wires used. Using gentle forces, teeth are alignedsmoothly just like magic! 6 Months Smiles treatments usetooth-coloured braces that are barely visible. e wires are usuallytooth-coloured as well. ese are nothing like the classic‘train-track” metal braces.

Some amazing before and after pictures sealed the deal andafter checking the health of Nicola’s teeth the treatment started.“e brace was fitted so during that time I used a manualtoothbrush and brush sticks. ere really wasn’t much discomfortbut I did become obsessed with looking in the mirror every day. Icould see how much in line my teeth were becoming. I hadmonthly checks - no teeth were taken out and at the end somecosmetic contouring on one of the canine teeth which hadbecome slightly smaller than we wanted. I had teeth whitening too.”

By January Nicola was ready for her make over pictures whichare provided as part of the service. “e pictures were great and Iam really pleased with the whole experience. I used to hold backwhenever a camera was around and never keen to smile. Now Iam more relaxed and can enjoy myself. What’s six months of mylife to look and feel this good? Ash is my hero!”

IJohn Bly

have just been asked to takepart in a television programmeconcerning the life and work ofomas Chippendale.Organised by a team ofcharming young people I was atfirst dismayed at the banality ofthe questions I had to answerbut soon realised thatresearch was needed for me toanswer them concisely and toprovide the information theyknew the audience would wantto receive. Rather like theDelia Smith situation when shebrilliantly recognised that therewas a large group of people whodid not know how to boil anegg. So research I had to doand in the course of that acouple of extraordinary eventsor more accurately discoverieswere made. About a year ago Isat with a colleague andwatched with interest how hesurfed the internet searchingthrough catalogues of auctionsales. I don’t remember the lasttime I bought anything atauction – my supply of fineantiques comes directly fromprivate ownership – and Icertainly wouldn’t buy anythingwithout seeing it. However, mychum pointed out a sale in theNorth of England where therewere several quite good-lookingpieces. One was a pole screenwith a needlework banner. Itwas described as mid-18thcentury and indeed it looked tobe so. Catching the infectiousenthusiasm as he was busilyphoning through his bid pricesto the auction house I venturedthat I would gamble theauctioneer’s upper estimatebecause I like pole screens, although they are the devil tosell. It was with mixed feelingsthat learned later that my bidhad been successful and I wasthe proud owner of the saidscreen and had to drive northfor three hours to collect it.Worse still, when I saw it I wasdisappointed. e needleworklooked patched, the stand wasplain and the only redeemingfeature in my eyes was a panelof early 18th c. Chinesewallpaper used as a backing. When I took it apart theneedlework was in fact notpatched and the colours were

good, and the stand respondedwell to a wax. So out it went ondisplay. Now back to myresearch. ere are manyreference books on Chippendalebut the ones acknowledged asthe most reliable are those byChristopher Gilbert. Flickingthrough the illustrated part ofhis e Life and Work ofomas Chippendale Ihappened upon ‘Screens’ andthere, believe it or not, was myscreen. I actually owned a pieceof furniture by the great man.Imagine the elation. Not somuch a financial gain as morean academic ‘find’; a missingpiece of history which hopefullysoon now will be appropriatelyhoused, curated and on displayfor all to see. I was actuallylooking for images of chairs, ofa sort frequently associated withChippendale and so muchillustrated in his Gentleman &Cabinet Maker’s Director. Ihave long been associated withsuch a chair – illustrated – andalways considered it to be c.1755 and after Chippendale.

(However preciselythe same in designand execution to aproven Chippendalepiece, unless there isdocumentation suchas invoices or deliveryreceipts as evidence ofprovenance, one cannever claim definite

origins of a piece of furniturebeing Chippendale’s workshop.)is chair has one distinctivefeature at the back of each frontfoot, a curious little crest createdby the swept back scroll fromthe front and to date by reputeknown as peculiar to onedesigner, Matthias Lock but Ihad never put time intochecking all available material. In the further course of mysearches, I was scanning someimages from the collection inthe Victoria & Albert Museumwhen I saw a drawing of a chair, not by Chippendale but Lock, and there clearly shown is thatsame little crest. Lock was a prominent designerand maker and his drawingspre-date the publication ofChippendale’s Director. Hisdesigns are considered strongerthan Chippendale but he wascertainly a disciple by the1750’s, subsequently workingsuccessfully in the classical styleof Robert Adam in contrast tothe high-style rococo for which

he is better known. Now happythat I have convincing evidenceof an earlier date for the chairthan originally thought Iremembered that it is alsoillustrated in Judith Miller’slatest definitive volume entitledChairs. is is a highlyrecommendable bookcontaining lavish illustrationsand notes on over 100 ofJudith’s favourite chairs from1640 – 2007. e trouble withresearch is that you getsidetracked and I started toreflect on one of the questions Ihad to answer for the TVprogramme which was “ Howdid seat furniture affect ussocially?” Well of course itdidn’t. We affected it. Chairs, settees, sofas and couches weredesigned to fit our body shapesbut more importantly toaccommodate the clothes wewore and so, chairs in particular, mirrored our fashion, style anddeportment more accuratelythan any other item in thecourse of our modern history. Amid-18th century chair with itswide seat, broad back andscrolling legs reflects the widefrock coats or hooped dressesand general ‘look’ of the periodwhereas a chair of the 1790’swith its delicate narrow seat andback and slender legs wereproperly suited to the gentlerbehaviour and thinner clothesof the neo-classical era. And sowe get diverted to climatechange, for the wearing bywomen of diaphanous ‘Empireline’ dresses could only havebeen practical in a warmerclimate than we had had inEngland until the 1780’s. But itdid warm up, and for a decadewe saw such heat waves asenabled classical poses to beadopted, such as reclining on asofa, a position quite impossibleas well as undignified, in ahooped skirt. And so a tablewas designed to pull over theend of the sofa, and the sofatable was born, thanks toclimate change. Now you knowthat if you are offered a GeorgeII sofa table – it cannot be. So Iremain most grateful to theyoung people who put thoseseemingly banal questions tome, I’ve learnt a lot

Get those jobs done with a littlehelp from DIY guru Julia Gray.is month: how to install awooden floor to add to the

value of your home.Wooden floors are practical, look

fantastic and help to sell homes becausethey have universal appeal.

If you're lucky enough to have periodfloorboards in your home, you've got a headstart, but if not, installing a wooden floor iseasier than ever.

Laminate flooring, which has a pictureof wood printed on to the boards, used to bethe easiest way to get the look, but laminateisn't as fashionable as it once was.

If you want the real deal, the good newsis that other types of wooden flooring arenow as easy to install as laminate.

Fitting real wooden flooring used to betricky, but not any more. Boards that justclick and fit together, with no nails, screwsor glue required, are widely available. isapplies to both engineered wood and solidwood flooring.

Engineered wood has a layer of wood ontop of the boards, but it doesn't go all theway through - there's a cheaper middle and

bottom layer.e thickness of the wood varies (usually

between 0.6mm and 6mm), so make sureyou know how thick it is and how manytimes, if any, it can be sanded.

A floor that can be sanded a few times isa good investment because it can take morewear and tear.

As lovely as solid wood is - and for somepeople, nothing else will do - engineeredwood can be a more practical choice (bothstart from around the same price).

Because engineered wood consists oflayers, it has more strength and durabilitythan a solid wood floor. It shouldn't shrinkand expand when exposed to moisture andchanges in temperature and humidity, unlike a solid wood floor.

Most wooden flooring comes finished, sealed and ready to fit, but you can also getbare wood if you want to stain, wax, varnishor paint it yourself, either conventionalfloorboards (new, or reclaimed period ones)or, again, boards that click together for easyfitting.

If your home's leasehold, you may haveto get the freeholder's permission to fitwooden floors or have the original

floorboards exposed, especially if you haveneighbours underneath.

See what the lease says because it mayhave clauses about wooden floors or causinga noise nuisance, which, of course, woodenfloors can.

One way to get round this is to proposeinstalling special sound-absorbing underlay, which may be acceptable to the freeholder. In this situation, getting the wooden floorof your dreams could be a bit of a battle, butthe end result will be worth it.

PRODUCT OF THE MONTHDIYing can be dangerous - drilling througha cable or pipe can have catastrophicconsequences. e new PMD 10multi-detector, £79.99, Bosch (seewww.bosch-do-it.co.uk), minimises the riskbecause it locates metal, cables and alsowooden studs.

A traffic-light system (and differentmodes) makes the PMD 10 really simple touse: green means 'nothing found', yellowmeans 'object nearby', and red means 'objectfound'.

A ring around a hole on the detectorlights up and when it's safe, you simply putyour pencil through the hole and mark thewall - very clever.

For extra safety, it makes a noise when itfinds something, and also displays theinformation on its screen.

e detector is extremely lightweightand has a big, comfy handle so you can glideit across the wall with ease. A must-havepiece of kit.

HOW-TO TIPBefore sanding wooden floorboards, it'sessential to bang down all the protrudingnails. Use a nail punch or a hammer andoffcut of wood, so you don't damage theboards.

If you leave any nails sticking up, they'llbreak the sanding sheets on the industrialfloor sander, which is annoying,time-consuming and expensive because youhave to pay for each sheet you use.

To start sanding, lift the sander drum offthe floor and turn the machine on. isavoids damaging the boards and letting thesander get away with you - it's powerful, sobe careful.

Walk the sander steadily across the floorin a diagonal direction, but don't linger inone spot because you'll create ridges in theboards.

When you turn the sander off, ensurethat the drum has stopped before putting itdown

A GARDEN ROOM CAN ADD VALUE TO YOUR PROPERTY AND MORE ENJOYMENT FROM OUTSIDE SPACE.

I t has been an unseasonally warm March, and we are all hoping that summer is just around the corner and we can start looking forward to outside living. But if you are lucky enough

to have a garden room or a gazebo you can enjoy garden living all year round. Not only that, but a garden room can add value to your home and increase your quality of life.

Crown Pavilions manufacture a whole range of garden rooms which can feature outdoor kitchens or barbecues, sitting rooms with plasma screens, studies with storage and internet connection, screens or fold-back doors to protect you from the weather, mood lighting for evening entertainment, heating, hot tubs, home gyms. Crown Pavilions can create a wide range of buildings for a variety of requirements, all of which will enhance your use of outside space, whether it be leisurely breakfasts with the family early evening drinks with friends, lunches and dinners, or just a private, quiet sanctuary.

One of the questions that often arises is whether planning permission is required. Luke explains, “A garden room should

be an extension of your home and you can put it wherever you want. In most cases our buildings would fall under permitted development. However in certain circumstances planning may be required. We always advise that you either contact your local planning ocer, or why not let us do it for you. We provide a seamless hassle-free product and service from order to completion.

“When we install a garden room we are especially mindful of the landscaping around it. Our sister company Crown Gardens, will look after every aspect of planting and creating a beautiful setting which ts in with your existing garden. e lighting and heating are also important, especially if you want to entertain in the evening. We take care of all that too. “

In an exciting development, for Chelsea Flower Show, Crown Pavilions is launching e Crown Duchess, a new garden room designed in partnership with the Duchess of Rutland. Working closely with the Duchess on every aspect of design and nish, Crown Pavilions has created a versatile, handcrafted garden room with elegant interiors that echo Belvoir Castle, the beautiful home of the Duchess of Rutland.

L and Rover and Victoria Beckham have unveiled a new bespoke luxurious, hand-nished Range Rover Evoque Special Edition. e exclusively design is the result of a collaboration

between Land Rover Design, led by Gerry McGovern with Victoria Beckham, winner of the coveted Designer Brand of the Year award at the 2011 British Fashion Awards.

Victoria was appointed Creative Design Executive in July 2010 and has worked with the Land Rover design team over the past 18 months to create her Special Edition.

Victoria Beckham said: “I am very excited to be working with Land Rover as I have an enormous amount of respect for the brand. I’ve always driven a Range Rover, for me they are the epitome of quality and luxury. When I rst started working with the team I did a lot of research, and created mood boards to show the team my love of timeless and classic design. I looked at yachts, luxury jets and classic cars. It’s the small detail that makes all the dierence. I want everyone who gets into this car to feel special and empowered by its quality and craftsmanship. I like that it feels luxurious but also has quite a classic edge to it as well as a contemporary feel.”

Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern said: “e design of Evoque has truly captured the hearts of customers worldwide. Working with Victoria the intention was to create a Special Edition that extends its character in a new direction through understated, restrained colour and detail changes. Both Land Rover and Victoria Beckham are British luxury brands with credibility and global appeal, this dual ‘Britishness’ makes the collaboration even more exciting especially when considering the huge audience for bespoke products around the world.

Working with Victoria we quickly recognised our similar design tastes and ambition for this car. For example at the rst meeting, Victoria herself inspired the use of rose gold. She was wearing dark clothes and no jewellery apart from a rose gold,

man’s watch. I was struck by the juxtaposition of the masculine watch on a very elegant, feminine wrist. We both agreed it was the ideal way to introduce a softer touch to the bold, assertive exterior colour scheme.roughout the process we were keen to ensure that the vehicle would appeal equally to both men and women, in fact Victoria always maintained that she wanted her husband David to be proud to drive this car. We fully enjoyed working with Victoria and I am condent this special edition will appeal to discerning luxury consumers globally.”

Quintessential British luxury is a hallmark of both the Land Rover and Victoria Beckham brands. is Special Edition allows that impression to be further heightened through the use of the nest quality materials and

craftsmanship. Powered by the lightweight, all-aluminium 240PS 2.0-litre petrol engine the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition will be hand-nished by Land Rover’s Engineering to Order division (ETO) in Warwickshire.

Essential to the design is the high quality hand-nished matt grey paint, unique 20” gloss black forged alloy wheels and luxurious rose-gold details, limited solely to this Special Edition.

Complimenting the ultra-modern, stealth-like exterior is an elegant and luxurious interior. e sport design four-seats are nished in a semi-aniline Vintage Tan leather, with a bold ‘baseball’ stitch detail chosen by Victoria as a tongue-in-cheek reference to her sporting husband David. e same leather is also used to cover the door inserts, arm rests and central storage box lid.

Another personal touch are the exclusive and ultra-luxurious oor mats. e designer explained that when she was a young girl, her father owned a Rolls-Royce and she would enjoy taking her shoes o to sink her bare feet into the thick carpeting. Land Rover’s designers replicated this for her by using mohair, usually reserved for luxury clothing, to make the mats.

Bespoke luggage completes the holistic design package that is the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham. is four-piece set is based on the designer’s own luggage range, using the same high-quality internal structure and clothed in hand stitched black leather. e set comprises two his and her’s wheeled suitcases and wash bags, all of which are lined in the same microsuede used for the roof lining, and as a nishing touch the zip pulls are nished in the same matt grey as the exterior. A beautiful hand stitched leather wallet, with rose-gold detail containing a guide to the exclusive features of the car is co-branded Range Rover Evoque and signed by Victoria Beckham.

Victoria Beckham is a joint venture between Victoria Beckham and Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment Ltd.

ABOUT LAND ROVERSince 1948 Land Rover has been manufacturing authentic 4x4s that represent true breadth of capability, versatility and premium design. e Land Rover Defender, Freelander, Discovery, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover each dene the world’s 4x4 sectors. All Land Rover’s products are designed, engineered and manufactured in the UK with 85% of production exported to over 177 global markets.

The Audi TT has received a significant performance boostwith the imminent launch of the TT RS plus Coupé andRoadster models at all Essex Audi Centres.

Audi has taken the already very potent Audi TT RS and boostedthe power to 360PS, moving it firmly into supercar territory, yetkeeping its price below the £50,000 mark!

is was achieved by tuning the 2.5 litre five cylinder engine toextract an additional 20 PS and increase the torque to a massive465Nm – all channeled of course through the famous quattroall-wheel drive system.

is latest addition to the TT line up means that discerningdrivers can now choose from a wide range of models that featuresdiesel and petrol variants that can deliver over 50 mpg and modelsthat can achieve over 170 mph.

For example, one of the most popular model variants, the AudiTT Coupé 2.0 TFSI S line features a 211PS engine for blistering

performance, lowered sports suspension, 18 inch 5-spoke alloywheels, and a plethora of equipment – all for the price of anordinary car!

And with prices for the range starting from £25,325, the AudiTT continues to demonstrate that it is certainly one of the bestvalue true sports cars available today.

Which means that this most iconic of sports cars may well bewithin your reach…
