Bloomberg LLP is known for its unmatched financial data, data analysis and news reporting. Over the last several years, we have diversified and expanded into a range of analytical businesses and media properties, adding world-class expertise in legal, government, energy and other industry analytics and media coverage. Each of these independent businesses has benefited from this increased expertise well beyond the economies of scale and synergies created. The charge for our strategy team is to create the mechanisms and opportunities for each of these independent areas to work together and further increase these benefits to produce a stronger Bloomberg, as well as lead the development and implementation of new products that take advantage of the expertise and output of these businesses and introduce Bloomberg to new audiences.

Business Models for Emerging Countries - Will one size fit all?

The catalyzing effects of urbanization and a growing middle class are forcing an historic shift in where the markets of the future will develop. Capturing this market requires a new way of thinking for companies that grow quickly in a different market reality. Speed, agility and perseverance are some of the key elements required to succeed in these markets, and this presentation will look at how companies can be relevant in these economies.

Agile Strategic Planning

The subtext of this presentation is avoiding the temptation of the "tail wagging the dog" - or the sexy region having too much sway over the boring core of the business. I define successful strategy development as a conversation - and the strategist is measured on the quality of outcomes from standing in the flow of knowledge-sharing and ones ability to direct the flow of conversation to achieve stated corporate objectives. The examples I use relate to my own role in my organisation; about the conversation that head office directs towards a regional strategy manager, and their ability to shape that conversation. I then talk through the success factors of successful strategy development and execution, some quite normal, but some also quite political.

Nurturing home-grown innovation for future growth

It is becoming increasingly important for companies to be able to identify and drive internal innovation as it is critical for future growth. However, emerging opportunities/businesses cannot be managed on a "business as usual" basis, they require a flexible environment and an entrepreneurial spirit in order to succeed inside large corporations. This presentation will provide a glimpse of how Schneider Electric, a €24bn global specialist in energy management, interacts with internal and external start-ups and the process it developed to nurture "home-grown" innovation.
