Halloween
Halloween is fast approaching. Please take extra care with your
children when they are trick or treating. Face paint is a much safer
alternative to masks that can cause problems for the children as they
navigate the streets after dark. If possible, accompany your children as
they make their rounds knocking on doors. If you are driving on that
night, please be extra cautious when there are little ghosts and goblins
around. A well lit patchway to your front door will also help to mitigate
any unfortunate mishaps that could spoil the evening for your little
ones.

Celebrate 30 Years of CERT
at Universal City, CA
Mark your calendars!
This year is the 30th Anniversary of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. To celebrate, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has partnered with CaliforniaVolunteers, NBCUniversal, and other CERT partners to host a National CERT Conference September 8 – 10, 2016 in Universal City, CA. CaliforniaVolunteers is the state administrator for the CERT program in California. CaliforniaVolunteers is part of the governor’s office, and the lead agency for volunteer and donations management during a disaster. Part of the administration of the CERT program is holding an annual conference or a workshop pending funding and resources. Attendees will join around 650 CERT program managers, instructors, and volunteers
during the event. “We want to have a lot of people who have historical relevance to
CERT. We’d also like to have a good amount of presenters outside of California at the
conference,” said Suu-Va Tai, Director of Disaster Volunteering and Preparedness for
CaliforniaVolunteers. Frank Borden, who created the CERT program will attend.
From a tour of LA City’s Emergency Operations Center to advanced training on staffing a
volunteer reception center, conference attendees will enjoy a variety of activities and
workshops. . Workshops include FEMA’s All Abilities Annex and how to teach the CERT
curriculum to people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs.
Other workshop highlights include how to use CERTS in a variety of disaster response
activities.
One of this year’s highlights is the 30th Anniversary National CERT Conference Awards
ceremony. Similar to FEMA’s Individual and Community Preparedness Awards, the
ceremony will be an opportunity to recognize all the great programs, volunteers, and
partners that have made CERT successful. Award categories include Outstanding
Community Emergency Response Team Initiatives and/or Innovation, Most Valuable
CERT Volunteer, and Preparing the Whole Community.
This year’s conference is an event you don’t want to miss! Tai encourages programs
nationwide to register and attend because the benefits are immeasurable. “By
attending the conference, people get to see the whole big world of CERT. People will
know who they can reach out to for help with their CERT program. Many volunteers are
program managers and instructors as well, so they will have new skills and tools to help
with that effort now. You hear about these great programs or great instructors and by
hosting a conference with these people and having them host workshops, you can
better build professional relationships with them.” To learn more about the 30th
Anniversary National CERT Conference, visit the CaliforniaVolunteers website. Please

The FEMA App Can Help You Stay Safe
The FEMA app can help Americans through emergencies. The app provides a customizable checklist of emergency supplies, maps of open shelters and Disaster Recovery Centers, and tips on how to survive natural and manmade disasters. The app also will enable users to receive weather alerts from the National Weather Service for up to five locations across the nation. This feature allows users to receive alerts on severe weather happening anywhere they select in the country, even if the phone is not located in the area, making it easy to follow severe weather that may be threatening family and friends. The FEMA app also offers a “Disaster Reporter” feature, where users can upload and share photos of disaster damage. The latest version of the FEMA app is available for free in the App Store for Apple devices and Google Play for Android devices. Download the app today! Users who already have the app downloaded on their smartphones should download the latest update for the new alerts feature to take effect. Information on the app is available in English and
Spanish.
FEEDBACK FROM OUR TRAINING DEPT
Hi everyone, I personally want to thank all of you for the fantastic training experiences that you provided to our last CERT Basic Training class. Your work, effort, meetings, email and phone calls to revamp,

upgrade and make the training modules more relevant to this day and age was appreciated more than you can imagine. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!! The feedback, not only from the participants, but from their respective CERT leadership teams has been phenomenal! Our CERT training is recognized as the best in our region, thanks to all of you. I apologize that I was unable to meet the deadline for the May newsletter and hopefully, will have space for a blurb on your training in the upcoming edition. Looking forward to working with all of you in the future. We already have 4 folks interested in training. Sincerely, Mary Benedek Vice Chair Quad City Cert Personal note: Mary did a fantastic job in coordinating the training. She made sure that all instructors were well prepared and gave the most update information. She had the sign in sheets ready for all meetings. She even had a delectable graduation dinner for all of the graduates and the instructors.
