Health & HarvestFest

The Springfield Avenue Partnership and Maplewood Loves Wellness are pleased to announce the merger of their individual events, HarvestFest and the Wellness Fair. Together, they will now bring you one event, Health and HarvestFest!

The organizers of the Wellness Fair and HarvestFest held a meeting some months ago to discuss the possibility of joining the two popular events. The discussion didn’t take long. Everyone thought it would be a positive change and agreed to the merger.

“Joining these two events is a great idea” said District Manager Julie Doran. “They are both already well known, popular events and together we can reach an even larger audience. With the best pieces of each event coming together, it will definitely be great!”

“The Fall, harvest season, is the perfect time of year to promote family fun and a healthy lifestyle, so why not bring the two together in one location. The combined fair will definitely offer something for everyone” said Deputy Mayor Kathy Leventhal, chair of the Maplewood Loves Wellness Committee.

There will still be the best of both events at the new Health and HarvestFest. The HarvestFest kid activities like pumpkin painting, pony rides and a bounce house, live music and performances will be combined with the favorite healthy eating cooking contest and popular health and wellness vendors from the Wellness Fair.

This is a win-win for our community, so mark your calendars for Saturday October 10th, rain or shine, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. We’re excited to bring you the new Health and Harvest Fest!

Melanoma (Skin Cancer) Prevention

Did you know that Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States?

In 2011, there were more than 65,000 cases of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin

cancer. Melanoma can be caused by too much exposure from ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun

or sources such as indoor tanning. Tans and sunburns are the body’s response to damage from

UV exposure. It is important for the public to understand: A TAN IS A SIGN OF DAMAGED

SKIN.

• More than 1 in 3 Americans report getting sunburned every year.

• People of any color can get skin cancer, and people with lighter skin are at higher risk.

• The rate of new cases of melanoma double between 1982 and 2011.

• Unfortunately, more than 9,000 Americans die of Melanoma each year.

Here is what you can do to prevent unnecessary exposure to ultraviolet rays when outdoors:

Maplewood and Bats

Every year, the Maplewood Health Department receives phone calls about a bat in the house

from residents. Throughout New Jersey, bats can be found in a house looking for shelter during

the spring, summer and early fall.

Here is some information from the New Jersey Department of Health about the common bat

population you will find in the area, and frequently asked questions about the rabies virus and

rabies exposure from infected animals, including a bat.

What You Should Know About Bats (April 2014)

Frequently asked Questions on Rabies (January 2013)

What You Should Know About Rabies (brochure)

If there is a bat in the house, advise:

• If you find a bat in a room while you were asleep, or in a room with an unattended child,

do not open a window. Remove all persons and pets from the room and enclose the bat

in the room. Please call the Maplewood Health Department at (973) 762-8120 or the

Maplewood Police Department during off-hours and ask for the Associated Humane

Society to capture the bat and remove it from your home

Hepatitis C and Baby Boomers

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) wants to encourage those born between 1945-1965, other

wise known as the 'baby boomer generation' to get tested for hepatitis C. Studies indicate that

those born during that time are 5 times more likely to have hepatitis C than other

adults. Hepatitis C is a serious liver disease that results from infection with the Hepatitis C virus.

Hepatitis C has been called a silent epidemic because most people with Hepatitis C do not know

they are infected. If you do test positive, and have chronic hepatitis C there are treatment options

available that could prevent the progression of liver damage, liver failure, cirrhosis or liver

cancer and may be able to eliminate the virus from the body. Contact your health care provider to

get tested for hepatitis C. If you need a referral to a healthcare provider, contact the Maplewood

Health Department at (973) 762-8120 x 4200 or X4300. For more information, go to:

Summer Safety Precautions

Of the many pleasures associated with the spring and summer seasons, one of

the most popular is the outdoor barbecue. They are fun to use and they

provide delicious tasting food. However, they can be dangerous if not handled

properly. Unfortunately, numerous fires and injuries occur every year due to

the use of barbecue grills. Most importantly, the majority of these fires and

injuries are preventable. Therefore, the following information can contribute

to making your barbecuing experiences pleasurable and safe.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Fired Barbecue Grills

1. The LPG cylinder should always be transported in an upright position

and on the floor of a vehicle with all windows open. Remove the cylinder

from the vehicle as soon as possible and never transport or store a LPG

cylinder in the trunk of a vehicle.

2. Never leave a LPG cylinder in a parked vehicle.

3. Store LPG cylinders, including those attached to barbecues, outdoors

and in a shaded cool area out of direct sunlight. Never store a LPG

cylinder inside a home.

4. Fittings on LPG cylinders may have left-handed threads, which require

movement in a counterclockwise direction to tighten. Therefore, care

must be exercised when removing and re-attaching the flexible supply

hose.

5. A soapy solution applied to connections can be used to detect leaks, as

they will produce bubbles.

6. When the barbecue is not being used, the valve on the LPG cylinder

should be kept in the off position.

7. Avoid grease dripping on the flexible supply hose as well as on the

cylinder.

Charcoal Barbecue Grills

1. Use only starter fluid designed for charcoal barbecue grills. Once a fire

has been started, never add fluid. Never use gasoline.

2. Use extreme caution in disposing ashes. Wet ashes thoroughly with

water before emptying the barbecue.

3. Store charcoals in properly sealed containers.

All Barbecue grills - LPG, Charcoal as well as Natural fired:

1. Read the manufacturer’s instructions and make sure you understand

them.

2. Keep barbecue grills away from anything that can burn such as your

house, car, dry vegetation, etc.

3. Do not leave barbecue grills unattended and keep children as well as

pets away.

4. Barbecue grills should only be used outdoors and not on porches,

balconies, under overhangs or in garages.

5. When lighting a barbecue grill the cover should be in the open position.

6. Avoid wearing loose fitting clothing while barbecuing.

7. Make sure everyone knows how to Stop, Drop and Roll in the event

clothing should catch fire.

Other simple precautions that can keep you and your family safe from

injuries that commonly occur during the spring and summer seasons are as

follows:

1. When using lawnmowers, wait for the engine to cool before refueling.

Never refuel while the engine is running.

2. Store gasoline outside the home, in approved safety cans, out of the

reach of children and away from open flames.

3. Use caution when using a garden hose that has been exposed to the sun.

Standing water can become extremely hot and cause serious burns. Let

water run and pre-test the temperature.

4. Set time limits for sunbathing. Use sunscreen and do not wait for skin to

turn red before applying protective lotion.

5. When the interior of a vehicle is hot, check the metal parts of seat belts

as well as plastic or leather seats before placing children in them.

Maplewood Village has been and will continue to be abuzz with action lately.

We welcomed two new merchants recently; Abril Cocina, a Mexican Fusion restaurant at 175 Maplewood Avenue.

It opened to rave reviews and continues to be a popular destination. Visit if you haven't yet. It's delicious.

We also welcome Kimaya Kama, a lovely women's clothing/accessories store, at 168 Maplewood Avenue. Recently

relocated from South Orange, she's a wonderful addition to the Village.

We also held our annual Girls Night Out in June. Record crowds came out for this perennial favorite event. Over 25

merchants participated, each offering a little something in their stores for attendees. Wine tastings, signature

cocktails, fashion shows, trunk shows, prizes, or games just to name a few. We were also proud to add a charitable

component to this year's event and collected money for brain cancer research in memory of merchant, resident and

friend Angelo Vayas, owner of the Village Trattoria, who recently passed from this disease. Merchants were very

generous and donated a portion of their nigth's proceeds to benefit brain cancer research through The Caroline Fund.

Looking ahead, we are holding our 4th Annual Art & Music Walk on Sunday September 27th, so mark your

calendars. Maplewood Village comes alive with art and music for the entire day. It's always a fun time so be sure to

come check it out. For all details, visit: http://maplewoodvillagenj.com/events/art-walk-music-fest

Springfield Avenue Partnership

Springfield Avenue, always alive! The last few months we have seen a few new merchants including the relocation

of Blue Life Karate to the old B of A building at 1882 Springfield Avenue and we welcomed Lexann Pharmacy, at

1885 Springfield A. They took over the old Topf's Pharmacy. Everyone is excited so please go in and say hi and

welcome!

MayFest was held on Sunday May 24th and even though it was Memorial Day weekend, we

packed them in on Springfield Avenue! Thousands of people came to enjoy the food, sights

and sounds of this street fair, Maplewood's biggest event of the year. Pony rides, inflatables,

food of every kind, vendors galore, and music on four stages! Fun was not lacking at

MayFest!

Looking ahead, we are proud to announce the merger of Springfield Avenue's HarvestFest

with Maplewood Township's Wellness Fair. We now will bring you the Health and

HarvestFest! The best of both events come together in one, bringing you a day of

celebrating Fall and healthy lifestyles. There will still be all the kid activities such as

pumpkin painting, bounce house, pony rides, and games as well as live music from local

bands plus the wellness vendors and healthy eating contest. We're so excited! Mark your

calendars for Saturday October 10th!

Chairs of Inclusion Exhibit

Opening Reception - Sunday, August 2, 2-5 p.m.

Artist Talk - Wednesday, August 19, 7-9 p.m.

The Chairs of Inclusion, commissioned and created to celebrate the 10th anniversary of JSDD’s

Wae Center, are objects of art that inspire a change in perceptions about what individuals with

disabilities can accomplish. The Wae (Wellness, arts, enrichment) Center is an alternative learning center in West Orange where members explore avenues for maximizing independence and achieving personal fulfillment. Throughout 2014, professional NJ artists worked alongside the Center’s artists, who are adults with developmental disabilities. You can learn about the project and the lead artists’ experiences at www.chairsofinclusion.org. The chairs, a testimony to the talents that often lay

hidden in people with special needs, will be on display at 1978 Maplewood Arts Center from

Sunday, August 2 to Friday, August 28, 2015, 1978 Springfield Avenue, Maplewood 07040.

Exhibit co-curators Onnie Strother and Mansa K. Mussa serve on the Board of Directors of the

Art Center.

My partnership with the WAE Center on the Chairs of Inclusion Project has helped me to discover another teaching technique: The WAE of the Zen, a

quiet, also meditative, approach to creating art,” states Mussa.

“Each one of the artists who participated in the process sat at the table and

used their unique talents to lift the cloak of disability to reveal the power of

collaboration, the power of making art, and the power of making magic,” he added.

The participating artists are: ArtShare Artists, Susanna Baker, Dan Fenelon, Tim Folzenlogen,

Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern, Ellen Hanauer, Jennifer Levine, Yvette Lucas, Mansa K. Mussa, Stephen

Schwartz, Gladys Barker Grauer and Onnie Strother.

The opening reception is free of charge and open to the public. Light

refreshments will be served. The gallery is open on Saturdays and Sundays,

2-5 PM, and by appointment.

Maplewood Historic Preservation Commission

Maplewood NJ 07040

http://www.historicmaplewood.com/

Two beloved local landmarks have recently been listed in the New Jersey and National Registers

of Historic Places. The Maplewood Municipal Building in 2014 and the Maplewood

Memorial Park in 2015. This listing will insure that in the future, any work or changes

proposed by the Municipality will be reviewed by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)

for conformance with historic preservation standards. Both are also designated as Maplewood

Historic Landmarks. The Maplewood Historic Preservation Commission (MHPC) applied for

and received grants from the Open Space Trust Fund to hire consultants to write National

Register of Historic Places nominations for both the Municipal Building and the Memorial Park.

The 1930 Municipal Building, designed by the noted regional architects Guilbert & Betelle, is

prominently sited to overlook the heart of the Township—the Memorial Park. Through the far

thinking planning of the Township Committee in 1922, which hired the noted Landscape

Architecture firms of the Olmsted Brothers and Brinley & Holbrook to design the park, the

Memorial Park (dedicated in 1931) is a constant in the daily life of our citizens.

To better understand the historic development of the Memorial Park , the design and the

plantings, and to provide a context for future decisions about the preservation of the park, the

MHPC applied for and received an Open Space Trust Fund Grant to hire consultants to create a

master plan for the park. Completed in 2014, the Memorial Park Master Plan will guide the

Township in the long-term planning and maintenance of the Park. The master plan includes a

concise history of the park and background on the landscape architects, an inventory, conditions

assessment and a prioritization for maintenance projects.

For the past two years, the MHPC has been hosting a monthly “Open House” at the R. H.

Grasmere Local History Center at the Hilton Branch Library. Members of the public are

encouraged to visit the local history center to meet members of the MHPC. This is a great way to

learn about the history of Maplewood through documents and to learn ways to research

the history of your house. The Commission can also help guide homeowners who are seeking

appropriate methods and materials for the repair and restoration of their houses. The Local

History Center, operated by the Durand-Hedden House and Garden Association, houses early

maps, real estate files, photographs, postcards and other ephemera to entice you on your journey.

The local history center is open to “Meet the Commissioners” once a month (except for July and

August) from 1:00 – 3:00, and by appointment. The upcoming dates can be found on the

Township website and the MHPC website, listed below.

Information about the Maplewood Historic Preservation Commission can be found on the
