As Maestro Hector Guzman takes the podium and the ominous Don Giovanni overture resounds throughout the fading light of the orchestra hall your mind may start to wander, inspired by the intricacies of Mozart’s music. Flashes of recollections of those we have lost may begin to surface, blooming into fuller ghostly apparitions: best friends and brothers, wives and daughters, husbands and grandfathers.

Remembering the departed doesn’t have to be sad. Just as the masterful D minor opening breaks from an eerie foreboding into a happier atmosphere, the initial sorrow at encountering the departed gives way to the joy of being reunited with them. Encounters with the dead offer an opportunity for transformation - or a chance to be weighed down by the past. In Mozart’s opera, the famous D minor opening announces the deathly presence of a man Don Giovanni kills at the beginning of the performance. In the form of a stone statue, the vengeful phantasm gives the titular hero a chance for redemption; Don Giovanni refuses and is dragged into the earth by the deathly embodiment of his unhappy conscience.

Perhaps we can learn from Don Giovanni’s mistake. Rather than run from the dead, we should greet them as the friends they were in life. After all, communing with the departed is as simple as remembering them. Those that have died aren’t really gone until we have forgotten them. The festival of the Day of the Dead is precisely about preventing this forgetfulness. During its festivities, we are meant to reincorporate those that have left us back into our lives and to keep their memories strong. In Mexico, the Day of the Dead festivities actually span two days; November 1st is meant to remember children (Día de los Inocentes) while November 2nd is for adults (Día de los Muertos).

During these days, people go to cemeteries where their loved ones rest and decorate their graves. While flowers (Mexican marigolds are traditional) are certainly part of the decorations, more personal offerings are also given, like things the departed loved while alive. As well, private altars containing favorite foods, drinks, memorabilia, and objects are built closer to home to encourage the departed souls to visit and to keep the memories of the dead integrated with the living. This may sound like it would result in a somber and morose festival, but more often than not it becomes a celebration of laughter, life, and humor. As Maestro Guzman says, “Remembering the departed can be a sad event, but a joyous life calls for a celebration! This is the Day of the Dead in Mexico.”

This lively celebration can certainly be heard in the Three Mexican Waltzes by Mexican composer Gori Cortes. These waltzes use a variety of influences but are lively triumphs of Mexican composition. As Maestro Guzman explains: “During the 1940s and 50s, Cortes was a fine violist and composed a series of chamber pieces for violin. These were later arranged for a string quartet by Yuri Kassian, who was a member of the Jalisco Philharmonic. Cortes wrote an array of music for the violin based on original themes but also used some melodies performed during the turn of the century.” Many of these themes were dedicated to the culture of Cortes’s home of Jalisco, just west of Mexico City.

Oftentimes, our memories of the past and the dead are tied to the communities in which we grew up. Jalisco is said to be the land of beautiful women and the birthplace of Mariachi music. Similarly, Jalisco dance embodies the playful

steps of light-hearted and often humorous courtship. It is unsurprising, then, that Marila and Un Cielo para Ti are titles dedicated to women and Jalisco de Mis Amores is a piece evoking the rhythms of popular Jalisco dances. These pieces remind us that remembering the dead doesn’t need to be a dark and depressing endeavor. In Cortes’s case, this means a vibrant, exuberant community filled with dance, passion, and romance.

The next two pieces heavily feature the guitar, an instrument that captures the daily rhythms of Mexican and Spanish life beautifully. “The guitar is one of the instruments most widely used in Spanish and Mexican culture: it is present in every social gathering, a romantic serenade, a Mariachi band, a popular trio or quartet or just singing about a lost love by a fire.” As Maestro Guzman suggests, the music of the guitar is the vigorous sound of a life lived with others.

The first piece is composed by Arturo Márquez, who wrote a number of Danzónes. While the large scale Danzón No. 2 was performed by the Chicago Sinfonietta last year, this year’s Danzón No. 3 is much more intimate and composed for a smaller orchestra. The guitar solo reminds us of the steady and reliable presence of community while the flute solo echoes the fragility and unique beauty of our own individual lives. Maestro Guzman elaborates: “The rhythm of the Danzón is ever present” while the “small orchestra sound provides the piece with its own peculiar personality.”

The next piece, Concierto de Aranjuez was written by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo about the miscarriage of his daughter, Aranjuez. “It has remained to this day, the best known and the most beloved of guitar concertos. The exquisite orchestration, the spectacular use of the capabilities of the guitar and the lovely themes, continue to make this one of music’s most admired masterpieces.” As Maestro Guzman eloquently states, this is a masterpiece; articulating both the deep sadness of the human experience as well as the profound joy of life.

After moving through the depths of Rodrigo’s Aranjauez, we reach the bright Ocho por Radio written by Silvestre Revueltas. It is so named because it was composed as music to be played by eight players during a radio broadcast. It was (and still is) widely used by Mexican radio stations as their signature sign-off music. Ocho por Radio - like much of Revueltas’ music - is poignant, fun, and rhythmically complex. Maestro Guzman describes the uplifting music of this piece as “Brief… but fun.”

The same could be said about life. In any case, tonight we celebrate life and our memories of the departed through some extraordinary music. Alexander Perry is an arts and culture writer based in Chicago. After pursuing playwriting at the Theatre School and graduate studies in religion and literature at the University of Chicago Divinity School, Alexander decided to leave the academy and explore the world. Hector Guzman, Conductor

A recipient of count-less distinctions, Maestro Hector Guzman is Music Director of the

Plano Symphony Orchestra, the Irving Symphony and the San Angelo Sym-phony in the United States. In 2004, he was declared winner of the “Seven Conductors-One Baton” International Conducting competition and ap-pointed Music Director of the Jalisco Philharmonic in Mexico. As a guest conductor, Maestro Guz-man has appeared with the Monterrey Symphony, Xalapa Symphony, State of Mexico Symphony, UNAM Philhar-monic, Philharmonic Society Orchestra, Bellas Artes Chamber Orchestra, the Vivaldi Orchestra of Mexico City, the San Antonio and Dallas Symphonies, the Wheeling Symphony, the National Symphony of the Dominican Repub-lic, the Mexico City Philharmonic, the National Symphony of Mexico, the Collegium Orchestra of Prague in the Czech Republic, the Japan Philharmon-ic, the Amadeus orchestra, The Sinfonia Venetto, the Milano Classica orchestra and the Bari Symphony in Italy and the Sinfonica de Murcia and Joven Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, in Spain. He made his operatic debut in 2005 with Rossini’s Barber of Seville and his performance of the opera Frida in 2007, was considered the “best opera of the year” by the Mexican press. He has also appeared as soloist and recitalist in venues such as the Meyerson Sym-phony Hall in Dallas, the Spivey Hall Dis-tinguished Artist Series in Atlanta and the cathedrals of Morelia, Guadalajara and Chartres, among others. In his native Mexico, Hector Guzman achieved an impressive reputation as an organist by taking first prize in the “Chamber Soloists” competition and the “Manuel Ponce” national organ competition. In the United States, while a student of world famous master

teachers Alfred Mouledous and Robert Anderson, he earned further distinc-tion by winning solo competitions at Southern Methodist University and the University of North Texas. In 1978, he gained world acclaim when he became the first Latin-American ever chosen as a finalist in France’s “Grand Prix de Chartres”- the world’s most prestigious international organ competition. Mr. Guzman holds degrees from the Conservatory of Music in Mexico City, the University of North Texas and Southern Methodist University and has studied with many illustrious con-ductors including his mentor Anshel Brusilow, Helmuth Rilling and Carlo Ma-ria Giulini at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy. For several years, he was a protégé of the late Maestro Eduardo Mata, Conductor Emeritus of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

In demand internationally as a conduc-tor and recitalist, Maestro Guzman was accorded the “Outstanding National Young Artist” award from the govern-ment of Mexico, the “Golden Lyre” award, given by the Mexican Union of Musicians, the “Meadows” award from SMU, the DeVry Institute’s “Director Par Excellence” award and in 2000, he was included in the “Outstanding Musicians of the XX Century” magazine, published by the International Biographical Cen-tre in Cambridge, England. In 2003, a Dallas based UNIVISION TV documentary on Mr. Guzman’s career was nominated for an “Emmy” award and in 2004 he was the recipient of the “Silver Good Citizenship Medal” from the Sons of the American Revolution for his outstanding contributions to the arts in North Texas. The 2005 “Artistic Merit Medal” was awarded to Maestro Guzman by the Government of the State of Mexico for his contributions to music world-wide and was also the recipient of the 2006 “Artistic Silver Medal” awarded by the government of his native state, Zacate-cas, Mexico. ent of the Mozart Medal, the highest musical honor in Mexico, awarded by the Embassy of Austria and the Mozart Academy in Mexico City.

Denis Azabagic, Guitar

Denis Azabagic is one of the most compelling classi-cal guitarists on the international concert

circuit today. A native of Bosnia, he performs concerts around the globe, maintaining a balance between his solo recitals, chamber music with Cavatina Duo, and engagements as a soloist with orchestras. Between 1992 and 1999 he won twenty-four prizes in international competitions, of which eleven were first prizes. He has written a book, On Com-petitions, based on his experience dur-ing these years and it is published by Mel Bay. Azabagic has recorded seven CDs for international labels such as Naxos, Cedille, Opera Tres, and Orobroy as well as two DVD’s for the Mel Bay Company. His recordings and live per-

formances are highly praised by music critics for his elegant approach to music and his unique way of communicating and reaching the audiences’ hearts.

Eugenia Moliner, Flute

Eugenia Moliner has been acclaimed as a “brilliant young musician” by the British Flute

Society magazine. Born in Spain, she has performed with the principal and co-principal musicians of the Chicago Symphony and Rotterdam Philharmon-ic orchestras, and has been featured on radio and television programs in Spain, the Netherlands, Mexico, Taiwan and the USA. Her discography includes six CD’s. Mrs. Moliner is an Artist-faculty Member at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University in Chicago. She performs with guitarist Denis Azabagic as the Cavatina Duo. The duo’s blend of Spanish passion and Balkan sensibility make their concerts a unique experience.

The Chicago Sinfonietta was founded by Maestro Paul Freeman in 1987 in response to the lack of opportunity for minority classical musicians, composers, and soloists. The orchestra remains a true trailblazer and a national model for classical music. Chicago Sinfonietta musicians truly represent the breadth of the city’s multi-cultural landscape, welcoming audiences from all walks of life.

Under the guidance of Music Director Emeritus Paul Freeman and now Music Director Mei-Ann Chen, the orchestra performs at the highest artistic level and has achieved an outstanding reputation for its innovative programs. The Sinfonietta is dedicated to the authentic performance of Classical, Romantic and Contemporary repertoire and excels at presenting imaginative new works by composers and soloists of color.

The Chicago Sinfonietta has a proud history of having enriched the cultural, educational, and social quality of life in Chicago, while gaining significant recognition on the national and international stage. The orchestra prides itself on programming one-of-a-kind performances that stretch the boundaries of classical music presentations. During the first ten years of the Sinfonietta’s history, the orchestra embarked on six international tours performing concerts in Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and the Canary Islands. The Chicago Sinfonietta has produced fourteen compact discs, including the much heralded three-disc African Heritage Symphonic Series released on Cedille Records in 2002 and a live recording of the 2007 tribute concert to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The orchestra has performed twice at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. In August of 2008, the Chicago Sinfonietta made its Pritzker Pavilion debut to over 11,000 people with a multimedia performance of Gustav Holst’s The Planets accompanied by a video suite created by Adler Planetarium astronomer and artist Dr. José Francisco Salgado.

With the announcement of Paul Freeman’s planned retirement in 2011, the organization conducted a two-year international search that resulted in the 2010 announcement of Mei-Ann Chen’s appointment as Music Director. Maestro Freeman’s final season culminated with a national broadcast of his final performance on WFMT 98.7 FM that also featured Maestro Chen as co-conductor for the evening. Maestro Chen’s tenure as Music Director was formally introduced to the city on August 14, 2011 with “Hello Chicago!”, a spectacular concert in Millennium Park celebrating the diversity of Chicago’s neighborhoods and people.

The 2011-2012 Season is the first under the baton of Mei-Ann Chen.


MISS ION

The Mission of the Chicago Sinfonietta is to serve as a national model for inclu-siveness and innovation in classical music through the presentation of the highest quality orchestral concerts and related programs. The Chicago Sinfonietta aspires to remove the barriers to participation in, and appreciation of classical music through its educational and outreach programs that expose children and their families to classical music, and by providing professional development oppor-tunities for young musicians and composers of diverse backgrounds enabling new, important voices to be heard. This will help America become a true cultural democracy, in which everyone can share fully in its cultural resources and in which all can contribute to its cultural richness.

CHICAGO SINFONIETTA EDUCATIONAL AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Audience Matters is the Chicago Sinfonietta’s core educational program. This pro-gram provides an immersive introduction to classical music for elementary school students in the Chicago Public School system. Through the program, students learn about the families of instruments in the orchestra from teaching artists – Sinfonietta musicians – who also relate composers, history, art, and architecture to the various periods of classical music. On multiple visits, musicians from different sections of the orchestra demonstrate their instruments through experiential tools, integrating visual, audio, and tactile elements to help the students learn. In addition, students and their families are invited to all Sinfonietta performances for the season. Over 1,000 students are participating in Audience Matters this year thanks to our generous donors.

SEED (Student Ensembles with Excellence and Diversity) provides mentoring for young musicians. The SEED Program identifies talented high school musicians and offers them a series of workshops and master classes taught by Chicago Sinfonietta teacher-musicians in small ensemble settings. The program concludes with a con-cert performed by the ensembles. The goal of this program is to both inspire and mentor these young artists, and encourage their professional growth for the future.

Project Inclusion: Musicians of Color Fellowship Program

The Chicago Sinfonietta is delighted to welcome the 2011-2012 Fellows for Proj-ect Inclusion. This program, begun in 2007, provides professional development opportunities for talented minority musicians funded through the generous support of the Chicago Community Trust, the Joyce Foundation, and others. Project Inclusion addresses the Sinfonietta’s long-term goal of increasing the number of minority musicians playing in orchestras across the U.S. by providing fellowships and ensemble experience for promising young musicians. Recent data shows that less than 3% of orchestral musicians performing with the top 1,000 orchestras are people of color.

Project Inclusion provides 2 year fellowships for young musicians of color that include rehearsing and performing with the orchestra, receiving one-on-one mentoring from senior members of the Sinfonietta, attending master classes and mock auditions, and assistance in job placement after completion of the program.

Harris Theater for Music and Dance: A Partner to Chicago’s Performing Arts Community

Opened in 2003, the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park was the first multi-use performing arts venue to be built in the Chicago downtown area since 1929. Today, the Theater continues to host the most diverse offerings of any venue in Chicago, featuring the city’s most acclaimed music and dance institutions as well as world-renowned national and international artists and ensembles through its Harris Theater Presents series.

The Harris Theater’s mission is to partner and collaborate with an array of Chicago’s emerging and mid-sized performing arts organizations to help them build the resources and infrastructure necessary to achieve artistic growth and long-term organizational sustainability. The Theater supports this mission by providing these resident companies subsidized rental, technical expertise and marketing support, thus allowing the organizations to focus on what they do best – bringing the finest music and dance to the public. Additionally, the Harris Theater is committed to presenting world-class music and dance organizations in order to maintain its reputation as a venue of growing importance as well as to help build audiences for the Theater’s resident companies. Lastly, through its Community and Family Enrichment Initiatives, the Theater works to advance family enrichment and engagement for children and adults in order to provide a strong educational framework to promote the understanding of the performing arts for Chicago residents of all ages and communities.

Harris Theater Performance Information

Rental Information: If you have any questions about the Harris Theater, including rental of the facility, group tours or volunteer opportunities, please call the administrative office Monday through Friday during normal business hours at 312-334-2400.

Ticket Purchases: To purchase tickets visit www.HarrisTheaterChicago.org 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; or call 312-334-7777 and visit the Harris Theater box office Monday through Friday from 12 – 6 pm or on days with performances until curtain.

IN CONSIDERATION OF OTHER PATRONS AND THE PERFORMERS:Turn off all cell phones.

For your safety, please take a moment and note the nearest exit. In the event of an emergency, please follow the directions of the Harris Theater house staff. In the event of an illness or injury, please inform the Harris Theater house manager.

Photography is not permitted in the Theater at any time. Film or digital images will be confiscated or deleted by the Harris Theater house staff. Infrared assisted listening devices are available from the Harris Theater house staff.

The Theater is equipped for easy access to all seating levels for patrons needing special access. Please advise the box office prior to the performance for any special seating needs.

Smoking is prohibited within the Harris Theater.

Parking: Discounted parking validation is available for all ticket holders using the Millennium Park Garage. A validation machine is located next to the Box Office on the Orchestra Level, as you enter the theater lobby.

Retrieved items will be held for ninety days with the Harris Theater house staff at 312-334-2403.

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of house management.
