8 APRIL 2013 TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225

We are accustomed to thinking of time asa fixed yardstick against which our lives

are measured. We “pass through” time (or timepasses us by) at an unalterable pace. Timedeeply affects everything about us and everything we do, but we have no effect uponit.

Physical science has since refuted this cursoryperception of time, demonstrating how time, like any other physical phenomenon, is in factquite malleable. It can be concentrated, stretched, speeded up, slowed down, orstopped altogether. This, of course, is achievedmostly on paper or by computer simulation. In practice, time’s dictatorial rule of our livesseems absolute. The irrevocability of the past, the uncompromising temporality of the pres-ent, the impregnable fog of the future—manstill seems very much a creature subject to time, rather than the other way around.

The Torah, however, insists that man can master time, transcend it, and redefine it. One example of man’s triumph over time isteshuvah (“return”)—the power to reach backin time and transform the significance of one’spast deeds.[1] And time itself, according toTorah, is a resource to be molded and developed by man, as man is charged to moldand develop all resources of G-d’s creation.Time can be sanctified—made more porousand absorbent of the all-pervading reality ofits Creator—as it is when it is utilized towardgood and G-dly ends. Time can be imbuedwith joy, freedom, love, awe, wisdom and a hostof other spiritual characteristics—as we dowhen we set the calendar and thereby determine the dates of the festivals. And timecan be accumulated.

From Passover to Shavuot, we conduct a dailycount of the days and weeks in reenactment ofthe forty-nine-day process of self-refinementwhich our ancestors underwent from their

exodus from Egypt on the first day of Passoverto the revelation at Sinai on Shavuot. “Today isone day of the Omer,” we pronounce on thesecond evening of Passover; “Today are twodays...,” we say on the following evening;“Today are three days...” on the next, and soon. Seven weeks later we conclude the countand climb to Sinai with the statement, “Todayare forty-nine days, which are seven weeks ofthe Omer.”

Two questions come to mind concerning themanner of the count. If we are counting thedays to Sinai, why don’t we state how many remain until Shavuot, instead of the numberthat have passed since Passover? Also, “Todayare two days” seems awkward if not inaccurate;would it not be more correct to say, “Today isthe second day,” “Today is the third day,” andso on?

But we do not merely pass through the daysbetween Passover and Shavuot—we accumulate them. Each of these forty-ninedays embodies another spiritual achievement—the refinement of another aspect of our personality and character. Each of these daysbecomes a component of our reborn selves, aswe internalize the freedom obtained at the Exodus as the essence of our commitment toG-d as His chosen people. On the second dayof the count, we possess two days of the Omerprocess; by its final day, we shall have amassedforty-nine units of time, and the specific qualities they embody, with which to approachthis year’s experience of Sinai.Courtesy of www.meaningfullife.com

INFANT FORMULA WITHOUT CERTIFICATION

Q. My pediatrician told me that my child shoulduse a specialized infant formula but I see that it doesnot have a kosher certification. Can I use it anyhow?

A. Most of the infant formula produced in theUnited States is kosher certified and does not poseany concern to kosher consumers. There are evenplenty of kosher options for children who cannottolerate standard formula

However, there is one type of infant formulawhose status is a bit more complicated. This for-mula – which is sold under the names “Nutramigen”or “Alimentum” – includes an enzyme derived frompigs and this enzyme helps pre-digest certain pro-teins to make the formula tolerable for certain chil-dren. Pigs are not kosher and clearly a formula that

contains pig byproducts cannot be certified as kosher.Nonetheless, but due to the relatively small amountof non-kosher mixed into the formula Jewish Law al-lows children to consume the formula. [These for-mulas are produced at companies where all of theother ingredients are certified as kosher.]

Another formula for children with sensitive stom-achs which does not bear a kosher symbol is called“Elecare”. This product doesn’t contain any non-kosher ingredients and is certified by the OU, but itdoesn’t bear an OU logo on the package. Read whyat www.crcweb.org/faq//faqanswer.php?faqid=51.

Lastly, there is Neocate, an infant formula for chil-dren with severe food allergies. It is not kosher cer-tified but Rabbis from different kosher agencies havevisited the factory and are in contact with the com-pany to assure that all ingredients used are kosher.

KOSHER ALERTSThe cRc has verified that the only

store in Ben Gurion Airport thatdoes not buy or sell any chometzover Pesach and is properly sellingtheir chometz for 2013 is the JamesRichardson Store at Gate D7.

Simply 7 brand White Cheddar Pomegranate Chiparemislabeled as cRc DE. In fact, theproduct is actually DAIRY(Cholov Stam). Corrective measures are being taken.

Some packages of Dole Mandarins in Orange Gel weremistakenly labeled with a ’stylizedK Pareve’ symbol. This product isnot certified by the OrthodoxUnion
