CHICAGO BEARS
Lovie Smith
Lovie Smith enters his eighth season as the head coach of the Chicago Bears,
tied for second longest tenured head coach with their current team in the NFC
and tied for fi fth longest in the NFL. Smith has a regular season coaching re-
cord of 63-49 (.563) and is 66-52 overall including the playoffs after leading the
Bears to an 11-5 regular season record, NFC North crown and NFC Champion-
ship game appearance in 2010. The Bears have won three division titles under
Smith’s tutelage, most in the NFC North since 2004. Smith signed on as the
Bears 13th head coach all-time on Jan. 15, 2004 and guided the team to its fi rst
Super Bowl appearance in 21 years three seasons later. The 2005 NFL Coach
of the Year came to Chicago from St. Louis where he was the Rams defensive
coordinator for three seasons (2001-03). In Smith’s fi rst season in St. Louis he
helped the Rams return to the Super Bowl. The native Texan took over the Rams
defense after fi ve seasons as Tampa Bay’s linebackers coach. Smith began 26
years as a collegiate and professional coach at his alma mater, Tulsa, in 1983
with fi ve other college stops along the way before moving on to the NFL. He
got his fi rst taste of coaching at his hometown high school, Big Sandy, in 1980
before moving to Cascia Hall Prep in Tulsa.
CLEVELAND BROWNS
Pat Shurmur
Pat Shurmur was named the 13th full-time head coach in franchise history on
January 13, 2011. Prior to being named head coach, Shurmur spent the previ-
ous two seasons as offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams (2009-10). Last
season, he helped St. Louis’ offense improve in total yards, time of possession
and third-down percentage, while also scoring 114 more points than the previ-
ous year. Shurmur helped QB Sam Bradford set NFL rookie records for comple-
tions (354) and attempts (590), while his 3,512 passing yards were the second-
most by a rookie in league history, trailing only Peyton Manning’s 3,739 in 1998.
Before joining the Rams, Shurmur spent 10 seasons with the Philadelphia Ea-
gles (1999-2008). He served as the team’s quarterbacks coach from 2002-08
after spending the fi rst three seasons (1999-2001) tutoring the tight ends. Prior
to joining the NFL coaching ranks, Shurmur spent 11 seasons as a collegiate as-
sistant. In 1998 he oversaw Stanford’s offensive line after spending 10 seasons
on Michigan State’s coaching staff as a graduate assistant (1988-89) and tight
ends/special teams/offensive line coach (1990-97).

BEARS-BROWNS SERIES
THE PRESEASON SERIES: The Cleveland Browns have won 17 of the
26 preseason contests with the Chicago Bears since the two storied franchises
fi rst met in 1950.
The Browns started the series with wins each season from 1950-54. The
Bears and Browns then alternated wins in 1995 and ‘56 before Chicago won
two straight from 1957-58. Cleveland won fi ve of the next six contests which
took place from 1959-1980. The two teams did not meet in the preseason
again for another 10 years before a 13-0 shutout by the Bears at the Hall of
Fame game in Canton, Ohio. The fi nal meeting between the franchises before
Cleveland moved to Baltimore came in 1995, a 55-13 victory by the Browns.
Cleveland holds a 5-4 edge since the re-birth of the Browns franchise in
1999. The two teams will be meeting for the eighth consecutive year, with the
Browns holding a slight 4-3 edge in those previous seven contests.

LAST PRESEASON GAME vs. CLEVELAND
Cleveland 13, Chicago 10
Thursday, September 2, 2010 -- Cleveland Browns Stadium
CLEVELAND - Browns K Phil Dawson hit a 36-yard fi eld goal as time expired to give
Cleveland a 13-10 victory over the Bears at Cleveland Browns Stadium to close out the
2010 preseason.
With a handful of Bears fi rst-team starters missing on offense and defense, the units
were productive in their limited time on the fi eld. Starters Jay Cutler (QB), Olin Kreutz (C)
and Matt Forté (RB) all sat out the Bears preseason fi nale on the offensive side of the
ball.
Veteran-signal-caller Todd Collins saw his fi rst action with the Bears, playing the fi rst half
of the contest. Collins was productive, completed 10 of 15 pass attempts for 139 yards and
a touchdown for a 118.5 passer rating. The touchdown was a 15-yard strike to TE Greg
Olsen, which gave the Bears a 7-0 lead fi ve minutes into the fi rst quarter of play.
The drive was set up after the fi rst -team defense recovered a fumble attempt in the
unit’s only play of action. MLB Brian Urlacher and WLB Lance Briggs both sat out
but fi rst-year linebacker Kevin Malast, starting in place of Urlacher, took advantage of his
time with the unit, recovering a botched exchange between Browns C Shawn Lauvao and
rookie QB Colt McCoy at the Browns 19. This was the second-straight year the Bears’ No.
1 defense exited the preseason fi nale after generating a turnover on its only play after CB
Zackary Bowman had an interception against the Browns in 2009 at Soldier Field.
The Browns tied the score on a 1-yard touchdown run by RB Montario Hardesty with
3:40 to play in the fi rst quarter. Like the Bears touchdown, Cleveland’s score was set up
by a botched center-quarterback exchange after Collins was trying to signal for a timeout
when backup C Josh Beekman’s shotgun snap glanced off the quarterback’s facemask.
Browns LB Jason Trusnik recovered the fumble at the Bears 13.
After Dawson’s 24-yard fi eld goal gave the Browns a 10-7 lead with 3:29 left in the sec-
ond period, the Bears tied the game on K Robbie Gould’s 46-yard fi eld goal two minutes
later. Gould’s kick was set up by Collins completions of 22 and 18 yards to WR Rashied
Davis.
The second half degenerated into a punting duel between Brad Maynard of the Bears
and Reggie Hodges of the Browns. The two combined for nine punts in the fi nal two quar-
ters. Maynard’s last effort was blocked by DeAngelo Smith, setting up Dawson’s winning
fi eld goal.
McCoy was 13 of 13 for 131 yards for the Browns before exiting in the third quarter.
As Forté rested, Chester Taylor totaled 23 rushing yards on four carries (5.8 ypr) and
added 12 receiving yards on two catches.

BEARS POSITION BREAKDOWN: OFFENSE
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR MIKE MARTZ
QUARTERBACKS (3) - Coach Shane Day
Entering a second season under offensive coordinator Mike Martz, Bears quarterbacks will build on a strong 2010 campaign which culmi-
nated with an NFC North crown and an appearance in the NFC Championship game.
Jay Cutler enters his sixth NFL season having completed 1,359 of 2,207 passing attempts for 15,964 passing yards, 104 touchdowns
and 79 interceptions to compile an 84.3 passer rating. In two seasons with the Bears, Cutler has established the top passer rating in
franchise history (80.9), ranks tied for sixth in touchdown passes (50), eighth in passing yards (6,940) and third in completion percentage
(60.5). Also a threat on the ground, Cutler had a career-high 232 rushing yards in 2010, sixth in the NFL among quarterbacks, and has
rushed for 828 yards in his career with fi ve touchdowns. In the Bears fi rst preseason game of 2011 versus Buffalo, Cutler played one series
completing his only pass attempt for 0 yards and rushed for 10 yards for a fi rst down on third-and-8. Cutler was 12 of 21 for 171 yards, in-
cluding four passes of 20-plus yards to three different receivers, with no interceptions or touchdowns for an 83.6 passer rating, in Chicago’s
second preseason contest at the New York Giants. In Chicago’s third preseason game at Tennessee, he was 13 of 21 passing for 170
yards and an interception.
Backing up Cutler will be Caleb Hanie and rookie Nathan Enderle. Hanie is in his fourth season with the Bears after signing as an
undrafted rookie free agent in 2008. He has appeared in four regular season contests completing eight of 14 pass attempts for 66 yards
and an interception. During the NFC Championship game last season, Hanie replaced an injured Cutler and led the Bears on two scoring
drives, completing 13 of 20 passing attempts for 153 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Versus Buffalo, Hanie completed three of
seven pass attempts for 32 yards and found the endzone on a four-yard run for the only touchdown of the game. In his second preseason
contest, Hanie completed 17 of 28 pass attempts for 166 yards with one interception, leading the Bears to their only touchdown drive of the
contest. In Tennessee, Hanie completed nine of 18 pass attempts for 107 yards and an interception.
Enderle, the team’s fi fth round pick (160th overall) in the 2011 NFL Draft, fi nished his career at the University of Idaho as the school’s
all-time leader in attempts (1,427), ranking second in school annals in completions (779), third in passing yards (10,084) and fourth in TD
passes (81) and total offense yards (9,935) in 45 games as a four-year starter. In his fi rst NFL preseason action, Enderle completed seven
of 10 passing attempts for a game-high 110 yards with an interception versus Buffalo, leading the Bears to a fi eld goal in the fourth quarter.
RUNNING BACKS (8) - Coach Tim Spencer
Quickly becoming one of the deepest units on the Bears roster, a pair of familiar veteran dual-threats will roam the Bears backfi eld once
again, while a new veteran face will add even more depth to the group.
Matt Forté enters his fourth season with the Bears, ranking fi fth in the NFL in yards from scrimmage (4,731) since 2008. Starting all 48
games in his fi rst three years with the team, Forté has rushed for 3,236 yards and 18 touchdowns on 811 carries (4.0 ypc). His 171 recep-
tions and 1,495 receiving yards since joining the league in 2008 are the second most by a NFL running back during that span. In 2010,
Forté joined Hall of Famer Walter Payton as the only running backs in team history to have 1,000 rushing yards (1,069) and 500 receiving
yards (547) in a single season. His 4.5 yards per carry in 2010, was highest by a Bears running back since Neal Anderson in 1989 (mini-
mum 200 attempts). In his fi rst start of the 2011 preseason, Forté played in one series and caught one pass for zero yards. Forté totaled 49
yards on fi ve touches in the second preseason contest at New York with four carries for seven yards and one reception for a 42-yard gain.
In Chicago’s third preseason game at the Titans, Forté had a game-high 74 rushing yards on 17 attempts (4.4 ypc) with a touchdown, add-
ing a 15 yard reception.
Chester Taylor enters his second season with the Bears and 10th in the NFL. His 285 receptions and 2,233 receiving yards since enter-
ing the league in 2002 are eighth among NFL running backs during that span. Taylor has also rushed for 4,663 yards and 25 touchdowns
on 1,140 carries (4.1 ypc) during his career. In 2010, Taylor converted nine of 11 attempts into fi rst downs on third-and-1 and fourth-and-1
situations during the regular and post season, including fi ve for touchdowns. Taylor carried the ball three times in the Bears preseason

The Bears added veteran receiver Roy Williams at the beginning of the preseason, giving the Bears a 6-3, 215-pound target. Williams
has hauled in 356 receptions for 5,208 yards (14.6 ypc) and 42 touchdowns in 100 career games played (84 starts). He was in Detroit when
current Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz held the same title for the Lions (2006-07). In those two seasons, Williams had 146 recep-

TIGHT ENDS (5) - Coach Mike DeBord
The Bears tight ends will have a much different look entering the 2011 season with three veterans that display size and strength and rook-

In eight seasons with the Bears, veteran Desmond Clark ranks ninth in team history with 242 receptions. His 2,639 receiving yards
ranks 20th in Bears annals and his 18 touchdown receptions are tied for 18th. Clark has appeared in 110 contests with 99 starts for

His 2.4 receptions per touchdown ratio is third best in franchise history. At 6-7, 262 pounds, Davis has been used mostly in red zone pack-

OFFENSIVE LINE (13) - Coach Mike Tice
The offensive line will have a mix of veterans, sizable youth and new acquisitions shaping the cornerstone of the Bears offense.
Roberto Garza is the veteran of the group, entering his 11th NFL season and his seventh with Chicago. Likely to hold down a start-
ing role at either center or guard, the durable lineman has appeared in all 100 games (94 regular season and six playoff) since joining the
Bears in 2005. In 2010, he started all 14 regular season games he appeared in and both postseason contests. Prior to his time in Chicago,
Garza spent four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons appearing in 52 games with 31 starts. He has played each of the interior offensive line
spots during his career. Garza started the fi rst three preseason contests at center for the Bears.
The guard positions are currently being held by Chris Williams and Lance Louis.
Williams fi nished the 2010 season starting the fi nal 11 regular season contests and the two playoff contests at left guard. The 2008
fi rst-rounder (14th overall) has also started seven contests at left tackle after starting his Bears career at the right tackle position (11 starts).
Williams started at left guard in all three of Chicago’s preseason contests.
Louis started the fi rst four games at right guard for the Bears in 2010. The 2009 seventh round (246th overall) selection, appeared in all
16 contests last season, the fi nal 12 as a reserve. In Chicago’s fi rst three preseason games, Louis has started at right guard.
Gabe Carimi and J’Marcus Webb hold down the starting left and right tackle positions and each have the adaptability to play on either
side of the line.
In his rookie season in 2010, Webb started the last 12 regular season contests and both playoff games at right tackle. At 6-7,
333-pounds, the 2010 seventh-round (218th overall) selection is the biggest player on the roster. Webb started all three preseason contests
at left tackle.
Carimi was selected by the Bears with the 29th overall pick in the fi rst round of the 2011 NFL Draft. The 6-7, 316-pound tackle was
named the 2010 Outland Trophy award winner after being a four-year starter at left tackle (49 starts) for the Wisconsin Badgers (2006-10).
Carimi has started at right tackle in the fi rst three of Chicago’s 2011 preseason contests.
Free agent acquisition Chris Spencer has the versatility to start at center or guard. Spencer started 70 of 80 games played for the Se-
ahawks over the last six seasons, after being selected 26th overall in the fi rst round of the 2005 NFL Draft by Seattle. The 6-3, 309-pounder
started all 16 regular season contests and both playoff games at center for the Seahawks last season.
Adding depth are Frank Omiyale and Edwin Williams.
Omiyale is a versatile lineman who can play both tackle and guard positions. The veteran, who has experience at both the tackle and
guard spots, has started 28 regular season contests (2 at right tackle, 12 at left guard and 14 at left tackle) and two postseason games (at
left tackle) over the last two seasons with Chicago. Prior to coming to the Bears, Omiyale appeared in 10 games for the Carolina Panthers
in 2008, including one start at left tackle.
Williams started three of fi ve contests played last season at right guard after being claimed off of waivers in September of 2010. For his
career, Williams has started fi ve of nine regular season games, all at right guard, with Chicago (2010) and Washington (2009).
Johan Asiata has spent a majority of the last two seasons on the Bears practice squad after entering with the team as an undrafted free
agent out of UNLV in 2009. Last season, Asiata appeared in two contests as a reserve lineman. Levi Horn spent the entire 2010 season on
the Bears practice squad after joining the team as an undrafted free agent out of Montana in 2010.

season opener adding 16 yards on two punt returns. In the second preseason contest at the Giants, Knox had three kickoff returns for 87 yards
(29.0 ypr) including a 45-yarder, and two punt returns for 15 yards. At Tennessee, he had two kickoff returns for 45 yards.
Bennett has returned 15 career punts for 160 yards (10.7 ypr) and a touchdown. In 2009, when Hester was injured, Bennett fi lled in on punt
returns and fi nished with a 10.2 average (143 yards on 14 returns), including a 49-yard touchdown. The 10.2 average was 13th in the league
among players with 10-plus returns. Bennett had a 33-yard punt return in the Bears fi rst preseason contest versus Buffalo.
PLACE KICKERS (1)
Place kicker Robbie Gould is the fi fth most accurate kicker in NFL history, connecting on 159 of 186 (85.5 percent) of his career fi eld goal at-
tempts. His 159 fi eld goals made are second most in franchise history and are the most in the NFL since Week 4 of the 2005 season when he
appeared in his fi rst career game. In 2010, Gould connected on 25 of 30 fi eld goals (83.3 percent) including a career-long 54-yarder. Gould’s
685 career points scored (208 PATs and 159 fi eld goals) are third most in Bears franchise history. His fi ve 100-point seasons and six seasons
with 20-plus fi eld goals made are tied with Kevin Butler for most in team history.
PUNTERS (2)
The Bears signed veteran punter Adam Podlesh this offseason. Podlesh spent the last four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars compiling
a 42.6 gross punting average (9,751 yards on 229 punts), landing 75 punts inside-the-20. In 2010, Podlesh set career highs in gross (43.8)
and net average (39.2) and punts inside-the-20 (26). In his Bears preseason debut versus Buffalo, Podlesh had four punts for 128 yards (32.0
avg), landing two inside-the-20. He had three punts for 129 yards (43.0 avg.), in the second preseason contest at New York. Against the Titans,
Podlesh averaged 41 yards on two punts, landing one inside-the-20.
The Bears have also added P Spencer Lanning (South Carolina) as an undrafted free agent. Lanning had two punts for 84 yards (42.0
avg.) against the Giants.
LONG SNAPPERS (1)
Arguably the best long snapper in the NFL, Patrick Mannelly is the Bears all-time leader in games played (205). Heading into his 14th season,
which will tie him for the most in team history along with Doug Buffone (1966-79) and Bill George (1952-65), Mannelly has been the long snap-
per in all but three contests since joining the team in 1998. One of the top punt coverage performers for his position in the league, Mannelly has
totaled 77 career special teams tackles.

OFFSEASON ACQUISITIONS: During the 2011 offseason the Bears acquired seven veterans that are currently on the Bears
roster. In a shortened free agent signning period, the Bears were able to ink veterans in all three phases of the team. Offensively, Chi-
cago signed RB Marion Barber (two-year contract), WR Sam Hurd (three-year deal), TE Matt Spaeth (three-year contract),
C Chris Spencer (two-year deal) and WR Roy Williams (one-year contract). Defensively, the Monsters of the Midway added
DT Amobi Okoye (one-year deal). P Adam Podlesh (one-year contract) was added to the Bears special teams unit.
ROSTER RECAP: The Bears entered the 2011 preseason with 47 players who appeared on the roster last season, including 17
primary starters during the season. Twenty-fi ve of the Bears 26 rookies have made their NFL debut this preseason. Ten non-rookie
acquisitions (RB Marion Barber, WR Andy Fantuz, WR Sam Hurd, WR Onrea Jones, DT Amobi Okoye, P Adam
Podlesh, DE Nick Reed, TE Matt Spaeth, C Chris Spencer, WR Roy Williams) all suited up in a Bears uniform for
the fi rst time in the Bears preseason opener against the Bills.
ROSTER CUTS: On Tuesday, August 30, the Bears must cut their roster down to 80 players by 3:00 p.m. CT. Four days later
(Saturday, September 3) each NFL team is required to trim its roster to 53 players by 5:00 p.m. CT. The following day all clubs may
establish a practice squad of eight players. To be eligible for the practice squad, a player must not have an accrued season toward
free agency. If a player does have an accrued season, he is still eligible for the practice squad if he was not on the active or inactive
list for more than nine regular season games. The NFL expanded the size of each team’s practice squad from fi ve to eight players
beginning in 2004. The Bears currently have four players on their roster from last season’s practice squad (T Levi Horn, LB Chris
Johnson and FB Eddie Williams). G Johan Asiata spent time on both the active roster and the practice squad in 2010.
G/C Edwin Williams was also on the Bears practice squad last season before being elevated to the active roster.
UP NEXT: The 2010 NFC North champion Chicago Bears will open their 2011 regular season schedule at home versus the 2010
NFC South champion Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, September 11 at Noon CST.
The match up marks the 25th meeting between the Bears and the Falcons, dating back to a 23-6 Chicago win at Wrigley Field in
1966. The fi rst 24 meetings have been split evenly, 12-12.
This year will be just the third time that the two franchises have opened the regular season against one another with the Falcons
taking the fi rst two such match-ups in 1972 and 1983.

Chicago 10, Buffalo 3
Saturday, August 13, 2011 -- Soldier Field
CHICAGO – Fueled by a strong running game and a stingy defense, the Bears defeated
the Buffalo Bills 10-3 in Saturday night’s preseason opener at Soldier Field.
The rushing attack produced 164 yards as Marion Barber compiled 45 yards on
seven carries in the second quarter and Kahlil Bell gained a game-high 73 yards on 13
attempts in the second half.
On the game’s lone touchdown drive in the second quarter, Barber rushed for 37 yards
on six carries to set up backup quarterback Caleb Hanie’s four-yard scoring run up the
middle on third-and-goal.
Hanie’s touchdown gave the Bears a 7-3 lead with 8:07 left in the fi rst half. The score
remained unchanged until Robbie Gould’s 45-yard fi eld goal widened the margin to
10-3 with 5:52 to play in the game.
The Bears defense held the Bills to 190 yards and no touchdowns. Buffalo crossed the
50-yard line on only two of 10 possessions in the game. The Bills’ deepest penetration was
to the Chicago 26 on a fi rst-quarter drive that resulted in their only score, Rian Lindell’s
44-yard fi eld goal.
While starting quarterback Jay Cutler exited after only one possession, the No. 1 of-
fensive line yielded four sacks while playing the entire fi rst half. The reserves then allowed
fi ve more sacks in the second half.
After the Bills took a 3-0 lead with 2:00 left in the fi rst quarter, Johnny Knox returned
the ensuing kickoff 70 yards to the Buffalo 29. But Bills linebacker Shawne Merriman
sacked Hanie on back-to-back plays, pushing the Bears out of fi eld goal range.
On the Bears’ next possession, Barber had runs of 11, 12 and 11 yards to set up Hanie’s
touchdown. On one of the plays, Barber steamrolled Bills cornerback Drayton Florence.
Bell set up Gould’s fourth-quarter fi eld goal by gaining 27 yards on a run and 19 yards on
a screen pass on back-to-back snaps, picking up nice blocks from tight end Kyle Adams
on the fi rst play and guard Levi Horn on the second.
Defensively, tackle Amobi Okoye recorded the Bears’ only two sacks and cornerback
Mike Holmes produced Chicago’s lone takeaway with an interception.

N.Y. Giants 41, Chicago 13
Monday, August 22, 2011 -- New Meadowlands Stadium
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Bears fell to 1-1 on the preseason as all three phases
struggled in a 41-13 loss to the New York Giants on Monday night at New Meadowlands
Stadium.
Offensively, the Bears yielded only one sack after allowing nine in the preseason opener,
but struggled inside the red zone mustering only six points until their fi nal possession of the
game.
The Bears defense allowed fi ve touchdowns and two fi eld goals on nine possessions
during one stretch while failing to record a sack or a takeaway in the game.
The Bears didn’t perform any better on special teams. The Giants scored their fi rst two
touchdowns in taking a 20-6 halftime lead after Devin Thomas returned a kickoff 73 yards
to the Chicago 31 and Greg Jones blocked a punt and returned it to the Bears’ 6.
After Rhys Lloyd’s 25-yard fi eld goal had given the Giants a 3-0 lead, Robbie Gould’s
23-yarder tied the score late in the fi rst quarter. The kick came after QB Jay Cutler hit WR
Devin Hester streaking down the right sideline for 37 yards and RB Matt Forte turned
a screen pass into a 42-yard gain to the Giants’ 7.
Thomas’ long kickoff return then set up Brandon Jacobs’ 18-yard touchdown run on the
fi rst play of the second quarter, which gave the Giants a 10-3 lead they would not relin-
quish. The 6-4, 264-pound running back burst through a gaping hole up the middle and
faked out S Major Wright in the secondary.
After Lloyd’s 37-yard fi eld goal widened the margin to 13-3 midway through the second
period, Cutler’s 32-yard completion to WR Earl Bennett set up Gould’s 42-yard fi eld
goal, drawing the Bears to within 13-6. The offensive line provided excellent protection on
the long pass over the middle.
Playing the entire fi rst half with the rest of the starters, Cutler completed 12 of 21 passes
for 171 yards and an 83.6 passer rating while being sacked only once.
Two plays after the Giants had taken over at the Chicago 6 following the blocked punt,
QB David Carr lofted a fi ve-yard touchdown pass in the right corner of the end zone to
WR Domenik Hixon, who beat CB Corey Graham to widen the margin to 20-6 with 35
seconds left in the half.
The Giants eventually increased their lead to 41-6, scoring touchdowns on D.J. Ware’s
one-yard run, Carr’s 17-yard pass to TE Daniel Coats and Da’Rel Scott’s 97-yard run with
2:46 to play.
The Bears scored their only touchdown of the game with 24 seconds remaining on RB
Kahlil Bell’s one-yard dive.

Tennessee 14, Chicago 13
Saturday, August 27, 2011 -- LP Field
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Bears left Tennessee late Saturday with their second straight
preseason loss. But the LP Field scoreboard that displayed a 14-13 Titans victory didn’t
convey the whole story.
With the regular-season opener against the Atlanta Falcons just two weeks away, the
Bears made key improvements in the wake of their discouraging defeat to the New York
Giants fi ve days earlier.
After rushing for 81 yards against the Giants, the Bears amassed 148 yards on the
ground as Matt Forté gained 74 yards on 17 carries and Kahlil Bell added 48 yards on
11 attempts.
The biggest positive for the Bears (1-2), however, was a second straight stellar perfor-
mance by their offensive line. In addition to opening holes for the rushing attack, the line
provided excellent pass protection, yielding just one sack for the second straight game.
QB Jay Cutler looked sharp, completing 13 of 21 passes for 170 yards with one inter-
ception and a 67.6 passer rating before exiting after one third-quarter possession. His only
pick came on a pass that squirted through receiver Roy Williams’ hands on the game’s
second play from scrimmage.
The Bears dominated the Titans on the stat sheet, holding decisive advantages in total
yards (416-220), fi rst downs (27-12) and time of possession (35:37-24:23).
But while there were many positives, the Bears struggled in other areas. The offense
mustered just one touchdown for the third straight game, backup QB Caleb Hanie
threw an interception that was returned for the decisive touchdown and Chicago receivers
dropped several passes.
On the other side of the ball, the Bears permitted just one touchdown. But the defense
failed to generate a takeaway for the second straight game and has now produced just one
in three preseason contests.
After Cutler’s early interception, the Bears defense held the Titans without a fi rst down
and K Rod Bironas pushed a 51-yard fi eld goal attempt wide right.
Forte’s 3-yard touchdown run gave the Bears a 7-0 lead midway through the fi rst quar-
ter. Cutler converted all three third-down opportunities on the drive with completions to
receivers Earl Bennett, Dane Sanzenbacher and Devin Hester. The Chicago
offense was 0-of-6 on third downs in the fi rst half against the Giants.
The Bears were in position to pad their lead on their next possession, but K Robbie
Gould hit the left upright on a 29-yard fi eld goal attempt.
Gould rebounded from the miss by drilling a 45-yarder to extend the Bears’ lead to 10-0
with 5:34 left in the second quarter. The kick came after Cutler had completed passes of 21
yards to WR Johnny Knox and 20 yards to Bennett on back-to-back plays.
The Titans, however, cut the defi cit to 10-7 as Jamie Harper’s 9-yard touchdown run
capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive with :43 remaining in the half.
The Bears were on the cusp of widening the margin late in the third quarter when Hanie
fl oated a pass into the right fl at that was intercepted by CB Tommie Campbell, who re-
turned the pick 88 yards for a touchdown to give the Titans a 14-10 lead.
The Bears closed the gap to 14-13 on Gould’s 52-yard fi eld goal early in the fourth quar-
ter, but they never threatened to retake the lead the rest of the way.
