COUNCILS IN
COLABORATION
President’s Message:
I am both honored and humbled to serve as President of the Chicago Archdiocesan Chapter of the Knights of Columbus for the 2018 - 2019 fraternal year. I will do my best to show that I deserve the trust you have placed in me.
I want to thank my wife Darcy, son Patrick, and daughters Grace and Angela for their unwavering support of my involvement in the Knights. Without their support I would not have taken on this responsibility.
I also want to thank Immediate Past President, Scott Hawkins, for his service and mentorship. I am sure that Scott will continue his commitment and enthusiasm in his role as Chicago Chapter Trustee. In addition, I look forward to working with my fellow officers. I will be relying on your wisdom and experience.
Background After being asked by a neighbor after a Sunday Mass if I had ever thought about joining the Knights of Columbus, I joined Holy Ghost Council #4977 in Palatine in July 2004. Since I had a seven-year-old son, I was immediately asked by the Grand Knight to serve as Youth Director. I took my Formation (Second) and Knighthood (Third) Degrees in January 2005 and moved through the council offices. I served as Grand Knight during the 2009 - 2010 fraternal year.
I took my Patriotic (Fourth) Degree in April 2008 and joined Bishop Sheil Assembly #2330. I advanced through the assembly offices and
served as Faithful Navigator during the 2012 - 2013 fraternal year.
I served as District Deputy 3 from July 2011 through June 2016. During this time I used district meetings to foster communication and cooperation among the councils.
Plans for the year I am eager and excited to start my term as President of the Chicago Archdiocesan Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. I view the role of the Chicago Chapter as being in service to Cardinal Cupich and his auxiliary bishops in their mission. How can the chapter do this?
The work of the Knights of Columbus takes place in the councils. The Chicago Chapter can assist the councils in serving Cardinal Cupich and his auxiliary bishops by:
Aiding in new council development
Assisting councils in addressing issues they are facing
Fostering communication and cooperation among the councils
Supporting the District Deputies in any way that we can
We need to review the chapter's finances and look for ways they can be improved. Over the past few years, the chapter has worked to develop a governance model for the Kilker Fund. I plan to implement the governance model, but I need your help. I plan to investigate a fund-raiser for the chapter so that we can do more for the Archdiocese. To further aid with the chapter finances, we need all councils to be up to date on their dues.

Fr Michael J. McGivney Golf Outing Sets an
All-time record
From left - Golf Chairman Tom Purvin DD Bob Fallon – Fr. McGivney Center Board President Joseph Moore – Dave Harman and Em Bataille, Cary Grove Council 12824.
The weather was beautiful; the rain held off, Cary Country Club was in great shape, the golfers were anxious; Holy Family Council 11981 & Cary Grove Council 12824 had all the details worked out to assure a perfect day.
It was overwhelming to the point it gave you chills to see the huge number of sponsorship signs & banners adorning the golf course.
A perfect example of the Knights of Columbus coming together for a common cause. Dioceses, Chapters, assemblies, Councils and local businesses all working together.
At the end of the evening, Joe Moore, President of the Fr McGivney center of Hope & Healing was presented a check for $25,000, the largest amount ever made at this outing and the largest fund raiser ever held for the Fr Michael J. McGivney Center.

WORLD DAY OF
PRAYER FOR PEACE
Each year, September 11, Marks the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States. As the Knights of Columbus observe World Day of Prayer for Peace on that anniversary, we recall the tragic events of that day, and honor the thousands who lost their lives.
We also pray for peace among nations, especially in those places where war or turmoil persist. We pray that religion will be a means of peace and accord and not an excuse for violence and division.
At its annual meeting in 2004, the Supreme Council passed a resolution that September 11
th be
observed each year as a World Day of Prayer for Peace.
Councils, assemblies and circles are urged to organize events and activities on Sept. 11 promoting prayer for peace in the world, and recognize those individuals in your community who work to bring about true peace. It is also a time to encourage members and their families to take time out on this day for personal prayer and reflection.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR
PEACE - September 11th
God of peace, bring your peace to our
violent world: peace in the hearts of
all men and women and peace among
the nations of the earth. Turn to your
way of love those whose hearts and
minds are consumed with hatred.
God of understanding, overwhelmed
by the magnitude of this tragedy, we
seek your light and guidance as we
confront such terrible events. Grant
that those whose lives were spared
may live so that the lives lost …
should not have been lost in vain.
Comfort and console us, strengthen us
in hope, and give us the wisdom and
courage to work tirelessly for a world
where true peace and love reign
among nations and in the hearts of all. -Pope Benedict XVI

SUNDAY
ROSARY PROGRAM
The 5th Sunday Rosary Program continues to be a success and many councils are reporting that prospective members have approached council members after the program with an interest in joining. Councils conducting this program need to be prepared for men inquiring about joining their council by having Prospect Cards (#921A) and Form 100’s available.
This program is designed to encourage more involvement in Church activities by council members, their families and parishioners. Plan now for the new fraternal year; the months that contain five Sundays in the 2018-
2019 fraternal year are July, September & December 2018 and March & June 2019 councils are encouraged to participate.
Councils that wish to conduct this program should first consult with your local pastor or council chaplain in order to obtain permission to conduct the program and to ensure there is no conflict with other scheduled parish activities.
Fifth Sunday Kits (#SR-KIT) are available through the Department of Fraternal Services. The kits consist of a finger rosary and prayer card. The prayer card contains instructions on how to pray the finger rosary as well as the prayers and mysteries of the rosary.
Personal rosaries may also be used when participating in the program.
Please visit the Knights of Columbus website for additional details on the program. www.kofc.org/5thsunday

Celebrating 50 Years of Unity and Empowerment
The spark that became today's Special Olympics movement was ignited at the first 1968 International Summer Games in Chicago, Il., USA.
Five decades later, we are returning to Chicago to launch the year-long global Special Olympics 50th Anniversary celebrations this July.
Join us as we play together, learn from each other, and chart an inspiring course for the future!
Special Olympics International, Special Olympics Illinois and Special Children’s Charities in Chicago are uniting to host nearly a week of exciting events to celebrate the first 50 years of Special Olympics and to launch the movement into the future.
Events planned for July 2018 in Chicago include the first-ever Special Olympics Unified Cup.
Also planned is a star-studded Global Day of Inclusion, where the public can "Play Unified" and join in fun athletic competition with Special Olympics athletes. There will also be a Law Enforcement Torch Run Commemorative Run and the ceremonial lighting of the Special Olympics Eternal Flame of Hope, which will symbolize our burning passion for inclusion and justice for people with intellectual disabilities.
This is a time for all Illinois Knights to show their support for the Special Athletes, where we are most needed:
Friday July 20 - 8:00 AM till 8:00 PM Unified Football Cup Finals – Toyota Park – 7000 Harlem Ave. Bridgeview, to
help fill the stands
Saturday July 21 - 1:00 PM till 7: PM Global Day of Inclusion – Solders Field, we will be in need of volunteers to help
or you can just come and enjoy being with the Athletes.
The web-page https://www.specialolympics.org/50th.aspx has been set up where you can reserve free tickets for all
the events, on the same site you may volunteer for as many events as you wish.
All 4th degree honor guards will be coordinated by VSM Paul Isherwood. Paul will be in contact with our members as
soon as we have the final number of honor guards requested.
Any question please give me a call at 815-790-9737.
