Welcome to Chicago Dramatists. Since 1979 our mission has remained true and fast: to discover and nurture the playwrights of the future. The productions in the 2010-2011 season are just three from the 43 scripts developed in our Saturday Series last year, representing the wide and exciting spectrum of material fostered by our organization.

Working with over 500 playwrights annually, Chicago Dramatists’ most important sign of achievement is its nurturing of compelling, challenging and diverse plays. These plays move on to have productions, earn awards, and help to define the American theatre. In the past year, our plays have seen over 800 productions, awards, readings or festival presentations, helping to enrich the lives of thousands of theatre patrons across the country, exporting Chicago voices to the nation, and boosting Chicago Dramatists’ status as one of the nation’s foremost new play development theatres.

Chicago Dramatists boasts 39 Resident Playwrights, while our associate membership – The Playwrights Network – serves nearly 200 writers, nationwide. Chicago Dramatists also nurtures playwrights and new plays through our Playwrights Studio Classes, the popular 10-Minute Workshop, Educational programs at challenged high schools, and The Saturday Series.

The Saturday Series is our foremost development program. Since 1979, over 1,500 plays have been presented in this weekly staged reading series. Saturdays at 2:00 pm, year-round, audiences can see and discuss some of the best new work in development in Chicago.

Tara Branham (Assistant Director) is thrilled to be the assistant director for Bordello with such a wonderful group of women. She a young director with a passion for female centric theatre and new play development. Most recently Tara directed the world premiere production of “The Last Daughter of Oedipus” with Babes with Blades. She has also worked with The Gift Theatre Company and 20% Theater Company. Tara recently assistant directed Sean Graney on Chicago Children’s Theatre’s “The Hundred Dresses Remount” and is excited to be assisting Tina Landau on “The Hot L Baltimore” this spring at Steppenwolf Theatre. She is also a co-producer of “The InchWorm Play” Reading Series, a series dedicated to producing monthly readings of new work by underexposed playwrights.

Melissa Canciller (Lotus) is honored to be performing again with Chicago Dramatists. A Chicago native, she has performed

throughout the city at BoHo Theatre, Silk Road Theatre Project, The Second City, and iO Theatre. She is an ensemble member of Chicago’s premier Asian American sketch and improv troupe Stir-Friday Night! and a founding member of the comedy troupe Fool for Thought. Recently, you may have seen her selling the heck out of Northshore hospitals, Aldi Foods, and Budweiser (if you can spot her). Melissa sends her love and thanks to all her family and friends. Marianna Csaszar (Set Design)Marianna is thrilled to be working with Chicago Dramatists for the first time. Since graduating from Northwestern in ’08 her other Chicago credits include sets for the “Hypocrites,” “Cabaret, “On the Shore of the Wide World” and “Stage Door” with the Griffin, “Durango” at Silk Road Theater Project, “The Flowers” with About Face and most recently “The State of the Union” at Strawdog, “Boojum” with Caffein Theatre and COV, and “Peter and the Wolf” at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with Lookingglass. Joanne Dubach (Kitten) is excited to be making her debut at the Chicago Dramatists. She was last seen in Northlight Theatre’s

production of A “Life”. Previous Chicago credits include “Moby Dick... Rehearsed” with The State Theatre and “Dracula” with Theatre Hikes. She has also had the good fortune of working at The Phoenix Theatre in Indianapolis and the Bloomington Playwrights Project where she discovered her interest in new plays. She is a graduate of Indiana University.

Emily Duffin (Production Manager) This the 5th production Emily will be working on with Dramatists. Most recently she was the Production Assistant for TimeLine Theatre Company’s To Master the Art. She has worked as the properties designer for Sinnerman Ensemble’s Too Much Memory. She stage managed “the Gimmick” at Pegasus Players. She has also designed for “The Artist Needs A Wife” and worked as a properties assistant for “Rewind” at the side project. She traveled to Novafeltria, Italy as a Stage Manager for “La Traviata”, and Production Assistant for “Don Giovanni”, and “Il Mundo Della Luna” for the program La Musica Lirica. She will be Properties Designering for Seanachai Theatre Company’s production of that was then. Emily would like to give a special thanks to her mom and dad.

Ariana Dziedzic (Michelle) is a 2010 graduate of The Theatre School of DePaul University with a BFA in Acting and a minor in Creative

Writing. Recently she appeared as Mina Harker in “Dracula: A Tragedy” at Redtwist Theatre and Caffeine Theatres Lewis Carroll Coffee House. Ariana is an Actor Combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors in knife, rapier & dagger, and hand-to-hand combat. School credits include: Head Nun in the “House of Blue Leaves” directed by Keira Fromm, Scheherazade/Dahna in 1001 directed by Carlos Murillo, Cassie in “The Civic” directed by Sandy Shinner, and Clytemnestra in “Iphegenia 2.0” directed by Thomas Weitz.

Marguerite Hammersley (Honey) is an Artistic Associate of Chicago Dramatists and was last seen in “Feast”, which was

also written by Aline Lathrop. Other Dramatists shows are “A Blue Moon” and numerous Saturday Series Readings. Marguerite was long time Company member of Stage Left Theatre where she appeared in a number of recognized and award winning shows including: ”Out of Spite; Tales of Survival in Sarajevo”, “The Waiting Room” and “The Clue in the Old Birdbath”. She has performed at Circle Theatre, Buffalo Theatre Ensemble and American Theatre Company as well as other Chicago and regional theatres. Some favorite roles have included; Hedda Gabler, Maggie the Cat and the Angel in “Angels in America” I & II.

Katherine Keberlein (Jewell) was most recently seen as the Princess in Oak Park Festival’s “Love Labour’s Lost”, where she also performed in “Cyrano

de Bergerac” (Roxane), ‘Blithe Spirit” (Elvira) and “Julius Caesar” (Portia). Favorite roles include Suzanne in “Don’t Dress for Dinner” at the Royal George, Mother/Aunt Mary in “How I Learned to Drive” with BackStage Theatre, as

well as productions with Theater at the Center, Illinois Theatre Center, Light Opera Works, and Buffalo Theatre Ensemble. She is a proud member of SAG with numerous commercial and independent film credits. Katherine sings internationally with TrioChicago & Friends.

Aline Lathrop (Playwright) is delighted once again to be premiering a play at Chicago Dramatists, her artistic home for many years. The critically acclaimed world premiere production of Feast at Chicago Dramatists was cited as one of the “Top 5 Best New Plays” of the year by New City Magazine, and the play won first prize in the Centre Stage - South Carolina New Plays Festival. A Piece of Bone received its Jeff-recommended world premiere at Circle Theatre of Forest Park. And Eat It Too has been developed at American Theatre Company, Chicago Dramatists, and Stage Left Theatre, and was a finalist for the First Flight Festival, Finding Voice Award, the Lark Theatre Company’s Playwrights’ Week, and the Ashland New Plays Festival, as well as a semi-finalist for the Playwrights First Award and the Princess Grace Award. Never Farewell developed at Chicago Dramatists, Circle Theater of Forest Park, and the Women at the Door Festival, was a finalist for the Julie Harris Award. Lathrop has also developed plays at Abingdon Theatre Company, Boarshead Theatre, Famous Door Theatre Company, and the Chicago Cultural Center. Lathrop is the recipient of an Illinois Arts Council fellowship and a Dr. Donahue Tremaine grant. Bordello was nominated for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. The playwright is a graduate of the Northwestern University Theatre Department and a member of the Dramatists Guild. This is one for Viviana and Isadora.

Meghan Beals McCarthy (Director) makes her Dramatists debut with Bordello. Chicago credits include Wild Nights with Emily (Caffeine Theatre), Arrangements (Pavement

Group), Boys and Girls (Theatre Seven) and the upcoming Icarus (Boho Ensemble), in addition to readings and workshops with Steppenwolf, Goodman, Northlight, Stage Left, American Theatre Company, Collaboraction and the Side Project. McCarthy is the Interim Artistic Director for Caffeine Theatre and an Associate Artist at Chicago Dramatists. Previously, she served as Literary Manager and Resident Dramaturg at Northlight Theatre, as Project Assistant for First Look at Steppenwolf and as Artistic Associate for the Pearl Theatre Company in New York.

Kyra Morris (Godiva) is a singing, dancing actor and physical performer. A graduate of UCLA’s Theatre Film & Television Acting

Program, she is glad to be back at home in Chicago. Recent roles include Antigone in Ajax Antigone at State Theatre, Hunter in Neverwhere at Lifeline Theatre, and Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Absolute Shakespeare, where she also served as movement director and dance captain. She is excited to join Chicago Dramatists for the world premiere of Bordello. Love and gratitude to friends and family.

Christine Pascual (Costume Design) is excited to be working again with Chicago Dramatists. Wherefore she designed Ten Cent Night. Recent credits include 26 Miles for Teatro Vista/Riven-dell, GL 2010: Not Your Generic Latina for Teatro Luna, Sizwe Banzi is Dead at Court Theatre, The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity at Second Stage Theatre and at Victory Gardens Theatre, Our Lady of the Underpass at 16th Street Theatre and for Teatro Vista, The House on Mango Street at Steppenwolf and Welcome to Arroyo’s for American The-atre Company. She has also designed for American Theatre Company, Congo Square Theatre, and Steppenwolf.

Jeff Pines (Lighting Design) is an Associate Artist and the resident lighting designer at Chicago Dramatists, as well as resident lighting designer for Loop Players at Harold Washington College. He has designed a wide range of shows for Chicago Dramatists including Playwrights for the 90’s, A Steady Rain, 10 Virgins, and this past fall’s production of The Invasion of Skokie, among others. Jeff has worked with a variety of other Chicago theatre companies in the past including Famous Door, Noble Fool, Victory Gardens, City Lit, Rivendell, Powertap, and Prop Thtr.

Jenniffer J. Thusing (Stage Manager, Properties Design) is always happy to be working with Chicago Dramatists. This is her second season serving as Stage Manager and third season as Properties Designerer for the company. Last summer she and Robert Groth designed the set for Chicago Dramatists’ Aiming for Sainthood at the Pritzker Pavilion. Her work as a set designer with Robert can be seen on Seanachai Theater’s production of That Was Then. Jenniffer is a proud member of Actors’ Equity. Brian Loevner (Managing Director) is a theatre manager, producer, production manager, and arts educator. He was a founder and the Managing Director of Theatre Conspiracy in Washington D.C. In 1998, he co-founded TriArts, Inc., where he created programming partnerships with the Chicago Park District, Gallery 37, and the Department of Aging. Over five years, Mr. Loevner grew TriArts into a Jeff nominated theatre with strong support from the theatre community. Brian Loevner has also produced and production managed over 80 shows with companies such as Famous Door Theatre, Timeline Theatre, Collaboraction, and The Actor’s Gymnasium. He also has extensive expertise business consultant, assisting sole proprietors and small companies

in setting up accounting and office systems. He attended Virginia Tech and George Mason University where he majored in Theatre Arts with a focus on Arts Management. As an arts educator, he taught circus arts, clowning, and general theatre for three years at Louisa Mae Alcott School in Lincoln Park. He lives in Humboldt Park with his two daughters, Carlisle and Lucy.

Russ Tutterow (Artistic Director) Now celebrating 25 years as Artistic Director at Chicago Dramatists Russ has nurtured the art and careers of countless playwrights at Chicago Dramatists. In 2005, he received the Artistic Leadership Award from the League of Chicago Theatres for his “outstanding achievement in developing new plays and his long time contribution to Chicago theatre.”Most recently he directed Chicago Dramatists’ productions of “Jade Heart” by Will Cooper, “A Steady Rain” by Keith Huff (Jeff Award for Production and New Work, Jeff Award nomination for Direction), “How I Became an Interesting Person” by Will Dunne, “10 Virgins” by Laura Jacqmin, “Water” by Alice Austen (Jeff Award nomination for New Work), and “Voyeurs de Venus” by Lydia R. Diamond (Jeff Award for New Work). Mr. Tutterow has been involved in not-for-profit, commercial and educational theatre for over thirty years. He has directed, managed or taught for such Chicago theatres as Goodman, Victory Gardens, Royal George, Mercury, Briar Street, Prop Theatre, Zebra Crossing, Igloo Theatre, and Cullen, Henaghan & Platt Productions, as well as Café LaMama Hollywood, and served on the 2005 First Look Council at Steppenwolf Theatre. Mr. Tutterow holds an M.A. in Theatre from Northwestern University and a B.A. in Theatre from Ball State University. He was recently honored with the 2010 Spirit Award by the Equal Employment Committee of The Actors Equity Association.

Alice Austen – After a hiatus to finish her novel “The Geometry of Chance,” Alice Austen joined the writing team of Steve Pickering, David Blixt and Kevin Theis at Shanghai Low Theatricals. Alice’s play “Destruction of Curves” was produced at the Cave Theatre this fall, her play “Best of All Possible Worlds” will be seen in Milwaukee and Chicago this year. Her newest play “Cherry Orchard Massacre” will be read at Chicago Dramatists in March.

David Barr III – In 2010, David staged a workshop production of “Mamie’s Angels” at Rainbow PUSH to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the death of Em-mett Till. In March, David premiered “The Moment” (based on the The HistoryMak-ers archive and in cooperation with the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign) at the Krannert Center in Champaign. His biopical/musical “I Gotcha! The Story of Joe Tex & The Soul Clan” premiered at New Horizons in Pittsburgh and received eight Black Theater Awards.

Scott T. Barsotti recently got mar-ried! Scott’s plays “McMeekin Finds Out” and “Jet Black Chevrolet” were produced in the fall of 2010 by The Route 66 Theatre Company and Curious Theatre Branch, respectively. Early in 2011, his play “The Revenants” will be produced by horror the-atre companies in Los Angeles and Boston.

Mary Ruth Clarke is working on a com-missioned TV pilot about the dawning days of the unisex health club and is happy to be learning the new discipline of writing for television. She is teaching Screenwriting 1.0 at Chicago Dramatists, and will teach 2.0 in the spring. She is also thrilled to be leading a Story Workshop for Google, through Chicago Dramatists.

Randall Colburn Recent productions include his horror play, “Ghostbox”, with InFusion Theatre and is opening “Halfshut” with The Right Brain Project and “And He Flew Over The Forest” with Brain Surgeon Theater. He is workshopping his play, “Verse Chorus Verse” at the DCA Storefront Theatre in January and is also working on a commission from Writers’ Theatre.

Cheryl Coons’ musical “River’s End” will be presented at The Spirit of Broadway Theatre in Connecticut in March 2011. She recently performed two sold out New Years Eve shows at Davenport’s with composers Chuck Larkin and Becky Menzie. In January 2011, she’ll receive a 2010 ASCAP Plus Award for original work she created in 2010

Lydia Diamond’s play “Stick Fly” is being produced this winter at Mo’olelo Perform-ing Arts in San Diego and at Everyman Theatre in Baltimore this spring. Her play “Stage Black” will be produced by Clockwise Theatre in Gurnee this May.

Will Dunne recently had a staged reading at Chicago Dramatists of his new play “The Roper”. Meanwhile his book “The Dramatic Writer’s Companion” is in its second printing and continues to top the “Playwriting” and “Scriptwriting” catego-ries of the Amazon bestseller list. He also continues to teach sold-out playwriting workshops at Chicago Dramatists and the Phoenix Theatre in San Francisco.

Marsha Estell was honored with the 3Arts 2010 Fellowship and will spend two weeks of uninterrupted time writing her new play “Water/Memory” at Ragdale.

Joseph Fedorko completed the fifth season of “Democracy Burlesque” a political cabaret/variety show he founded (and currently serves as Executive Producer and contributing writer) at Mary’s Attic in Chica-go. “Democracy Burlesque” was featured in stories appearing in New City, Northwest-ern University, and WCPT radio in Chicago.

Dana Lynn Formby’s play “The Small of her Back” had a workshop production at Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. Her plays have been read at New York Theatre Workshop, PICT, and Victory Gardens Theater. Her play “Armed with Peanut Butter” is being translated into Russian for the Playwright and Director Center of Moscow.

John S. Green’s “The Liquid Moon” (Jeff Award) most recently had a reading at The Geffen Playhouse in L.A. His play, “Twilight Serenade,” was published by Dramatic Publishing. He is develop-ing a project, “Dare To Dream,” with L.A. director/producer, Nick Celozzi.

Jim Henry’s new play “Brother of All” had a staged Saturday Series reading in November at Chicago Dramatists. His newest play “Bury Me” will have a staged reading at Chicago Street Theatre in February. Jim’s “The Seventh Monarch” will be produced at Missouri Valley Col-lege in April 2011 and is entered into the American College Theatre Festival. Jim will also conduct playwriting workshops at the college during the run of the show.

Andrew Hinderaker’s play “Suicide, Incorporated” premiered at Chicago’s Gift Theatre in June 2010 to rave reviews. The sold-out production was extended

twice and was nominated for multiple Jeff Awards, including Best New Work. Andrew’s follow-up play “Kingsville” premiered at Chicago’s Stage Left Theatre in October. The production was named one of the “11 Best Shows in Chicago This Season” by Chicago Magazine.

Keith Huff’s upcoming theatrical produc-tions include “The Detective’s Wife” at Writers Theater (Glencoe, IL), “Pursued By Happiness” at The Road Theater (Los Ange-les), “The Bird and Mr. Banks” in London, and productions of “A Steady Rain” in Barcelona, Budapest, and Paris. In film, he recently completed the screenplay for the film ver-sion of “A Steady Rain” (EON, Inc.) and is cur-rently writing “Kill Switch” (EMJAG, Inc.) For television, he is developing “The Brothers Buczakowski” for HBO and “Why We Fight” for Steven Spielberg/DreamWorks TV.

Laura Jacqmin’s play “Dental Society Midwinter Meeting” will be remounted in February-March, 2011 at 16th Street Theatre after a sold-out run at Chi-cago Dramatists. Her play “Dead Pile” will premiere with XIII Pocket at Stage 773, February 2011. Laura is a member of the Goodman Theatre’s 2010-2011 playwrights unit, and is currently working on commis-sions for the Goodman, Arden Theatre Company, InterAct Theatre and Ensemble Studio Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Founda-tion Science & Technology Project.

Susan Lieberman’s musical “Crazy Mary” (lyrics by Jan Trannen, music by Jay Schwandt) will be presented as a reading in the Saturday Series this summer, directed by Michael Halberstam. Her play “Praire Lights” was recently produced by SDITC Theatre Company in Butte, Montana. A scene from “The Pink Parlor” will be includ-ed in the International Center for Women Playwrights’ Diversity Scenes Anthology.

Arlene Malinowski’s solo show “Aim-ing For Sainthood” was produced by Victory Gardens Biograph this fall. She was nominated for a 3Arts award and will be a Visiting Artist in Residence at the Quad Cities Arts Program.

Mia McCullough most recently devel-oped her play “Impenetrable” through Stage Left’s Down Stage Left program, and “The Anatomy Of Pain” through Chicago Dramatists’ Saturday Series. She is currently working on two new plays and a screenplay, and teaches playwrit-ing at Northwestern University.

Carlos Murillo is currently writing com-missions for Steppenwolf and Playwrights Horizons in addition to a piece written for the graduation MFA acting class of The Theatre School, which will be produced at the Merle Reskin Theatre in May. “A Human Interest Story (or The Gory Details and All)”, which premiered in Chicago at Walkabout Theatre in 2004, will have its German premiere at Theatre der Stadt Aalen in February 2011. “Diagram of a Paper Airplane” will be produced at Zoetic Stage in Miami in May 2011.

Christopher de Paola now resides in Mi-ami, FL. He is Founder of the South Florida Playwrights’ Initiative, a development work-shop aimed at thrusting South Florida onto the national stage as a premiere incubator of new work for the American Theatre. He is currently writing the book for a musical with 2-time Grammy nominated musician Elsten Torres. The musical will be developed and promoted through SFPI.

Tania Richard’s play “Selecting Memory” will be produced at North-eastern Illinois University in February.

Emily Schwartz’s “The War Plays” was produced by The Strange Tree Group this fall, running October 28th-November 20th in Chicago. The Strange Tree Group will also produce her “The Three Faces of Doctor Crippen” as a part of Steppenwolf’s Second Annual GARAGE REP opening in February 2011. “Mr. Spacky The Man Who Was Continuously Followed by Wolves” will be produced in March 2011 by The Catamounts in Boulder, Colorado.

Jon Steinhagen is appearing as Big Daddy in Raven Theatre’s production of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” through January 22nd. His play “Aces” will open at Signal En-semble Theatre in May 2011. This holiday season, his film essays were published in the book “Playbills to Photoplays”.

Steven Simoncic’s play “Toxic Donut”, recently won the NAAA (North American Actors Association) Playwriting Contest and received a staged reading in London. His play “Broken Fences”, will be produced in New York with Stageplays Theatre Com-pany in Spring 2011. Also, he has been pub-lished in the most recent edition of Con-clave, a literary journal based in Chicago.

Mark Young completed a film version of his play “The Rocks” over the summer. “The Rocks” was originally produced by the Side Project Theatre Company in Chicago. He is currently at work on a new play, “A Short History of Chicago.”
