20 | Chetek visitor’s Guide 2014
Chetek, the City of Lakes, is located in northwestern Wisconsin on the Big Six Chain of Lakes — but how many other details of these bodies of water and the land surrounding them is well known?
Did you know that these six lakes — Chetek, Prairie, Pokegama, Moose Ear, Ten Mile and Ojaski — cover 3,800 surface acres with the smallest, Moose Ear Lake, covering 33.6 surface acres? Lake Chetek, which appears to be the largest, covers just 683 surface acres, while Prairie Lake has 1,545 surface acres. Lake Chetek is the deepest lake, with a maximum depth of 22 feet.
Fish populations in these lakes include Northern Pike, Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Bluegills, Black Crappies, Pumpkinseeds, Perch, Bullheads, Rock Bass and White Suckers.
MOOSe eAR lAke On the lower part of Moose Ear Creek, this lake has 33.6 surface acres with a maximum depth of just 6 feet, and has a warm water fish population. An intermittent stream from Couderay Lake and a spring feeder from a pond also supply water to the stream. A 150 acre wetland adjoining the stream near Moose Ear Lake provides habitat for muskrats and nesting puddle ducks.
Chetek lAke With a maximum depth of 22 feet, Chetek Lake has a total of 683 surface acres. It is a recreational lake and is surrounded on most of its area by permanent residences, summer homes, resorts, and the City of Chetek. The city operates a public swimming beach during the summer months and a large public boat landing is located near the city Airport on Lakeview Drive. Lake Chetek is also the site of the Hydroflites Water Ski Team’s shows held throughout the summer from their property located adjacent to the boat landing on Lakeview Drive.
ten MIle lAke This lake at the southern most point of the Chain has a depth of 10 feet and 393 surface acres. This lake is also a soft water drainage impoundment in the Chetek Lake Chain. Muskrats, nesting mallards and wood ducks use the 27 acres of lake edge wetlands.
OJASkI lAke Located in the Town of Chetek, Ojaski Lake (also known locally as Mud Lake) covers 567.1 surface acres and has a maximum depth of 15 feet. Pokegama Creek, which flows into Ojaski Lake from the north, provides a spawning area for northern and walleye. Located in a farming area, the lake is surrounded by upland hardwoods. white pine and cultivated farmland. About three acres of marsh wetlands on the northeast shore provide habitat for muskrats, nesting mallards, teal and wood ducks.
pOkegAMA lAke With 494 surface acres and a maximum depth of 19 feet, Pokegama Lake is a very popular fishing lake. A soft water drainage lake in the Chetek Chain between Ojaski Lake and Lake Chetek, the immediate lakeshore vegetation is pine and hardwood with the exception of several marsh-edged bays. These marshes provide habitat for muskrats and puddle ducks. Keep your eyes peeled when cruising along the shorelines as deer and other wildlife come down to get a drink of water. Another sight becoming more common each year are Bald Eagles soaring above the lakes, catching fish to feed themselves and their young.
pRAIRIe lAke With a maximum depth of 16 feet, Prairie Lake is the largest lake in the Chetek Lake Chain with 1,545 surface acres. A soft water drainage lake, the lake level is maintained by the water control structure on Lake Chetek, and the fish species consist of all those named previously. The lakeshore is predominantly upland hardwoods and pine, and three acres of marsh edge along the lake provide habitat for muskrats, nesting puddle ducks and mergansers. Coot and Canada geese also use the lake during spring and fall migratory periods. The haunting call of the loon can be heard also during the early and late migration times. It is in these waters that the famous floating islands originated, moving from time to time to different locations. The lake runs from the north side of Chetek northward, almost to Cameron and Highway 8. While much of the shoreline is developed with residential homes, cabins and resorts, there is still a large portion of the lake that remains wild, offering natural settings for fishing along the banks of the lake.

Chippewa Moraine has 4,177 acres and is dotted with small glacial kettle lakes. Some of the lakes have a decent fish population; others just provide home for a wide array of frogs, reptiles, turtles and what have you. There are 13 miles of trails in the park, including the Ice Age Trail which is a National Scenic Trail (like the Appalachian Trail). Outside of the park is another 12 miles of trail, extending all the way to Cornell and Brunet Island State Park. The trails are for foot travel only—no motorized vehicles, no horses—just feet. Dogs are welcome! In short hiking distance from a parking lot, a well-established Great Blue Heron rookery is visible. Over 60 nests are there, and when in residence, it is very noisy and busy with birds repairing nests, carrying sticks, and going back and forth on fishing trips to feed their young. Hunting opportunities are offered and deer season is busy with hopeful hunters.
The center is open every day of the year from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Inside the visitor center there are glacial displays and cultural and natural history displays. The staff is very hands-on and encourage children to try one of nine indoor scavenger hunts. Upon successful “quizzing” by a patient naturalist, children can pick a prize for a job well done. They can also hold a snake or a turtle and catch bugs outside with a net to fish the fish and turtles. There are family-based nature movies, films explaining the glacial process and documentary films about early logging and river driving.
Hiking some segment of the trail is always nice, and in winter over 55 pairs of snowshoes, for all ages, are available for use on the property at no charge (although donations are welcomed). The reserve has incredible snowshoeing, partly because of the tranquility that is found there. There are also three outpost, wilderness type, campsites available on a first-come, first-serve basis. A fee of $10 a night includes a fire ring and “outdoor” privy. The great blue herons, frogs and coyotes will sometimes provide an evening chorus for you at no charge!
The Chippewa Moraine also abounds in bird and animal life. In the summer, Ruby-throated hummingbirds are there in droves and Red-headed woodpeckers can always be seen on the feeders outside the building. Each season brings a new wave of transient birds to admire and to try to record sightings. Bear, deer, fishers, sand hill cranes, fox, porcupines and raccoon are common to the reserve and sometimes seen by hikers. No admission fee is charged to visit the nature center, although boat landings do require a Wisconsin State Park sticker. Stickers are good at any state park within the calendar year.

The Chetek Area Calhoun Museum, operated by the Chetek Area Historical Society, is a membership-supported, non-profit organization that promotes and interprets the history of the greater Chetek area of northern Wisconsin. In addition to the collection of artifacts from times gone by, which are on display in downtown Chetek, the museum also hosts a variety of events during the year that serve to entertain and teach people about life in another time.
The museum has four focal points: the lumbering industry, the tourist industry, the Native American influence and the service of Chetek area residents in the United States military.
The museum has numerous old plat books, high school yearbooks, over 50 volumes of The Chetek Alert, old community photographs and cemetery records, as well as numerous other historical documents.
The museum is located at 728 Second Street and is open Wednesday–Saturday from 1-4:30 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Appointments can also be made by calling 715-924-4180.
The museum will hold their fourth annual Chetek Boat reunion/rally in conjunction with the airplane fly-in at the Chetek Airport Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible.
www.chetekmuseum.org
Chetek was first settled in 1863 and platted on Oct. 15, 1875, on land owned by Knapp, Stout & Co. and E. M. Sexton. Chetek was never incorporated as a village but became an incorporated city in 1891. At the time, Chetek was the first and only city in the United States to pass directly from a township system to a full-fledged city. It was also the smallest incorporated city in the United States, having a population then of only 531 people.
The origin of the name “Chetek” is mired in controversy. From a variety of sources we are given several explanations as to how the name was derived. One history says the name “Chetek,” which Ojibway Indians called “Sheetak,” means pelican, literally little pelican. This is to distinguish it from Big Chetac located farther north. Another theory says that the name was given by Knapp, Stout & Co. lumbermen for a Chippewa Indian Chief, whose name by various writers was spelled Chetek, Shetek, Shetack, Shetuc, and Chetack, respectively, with the meaning being “between two rivers,” or confluence of rivers. In 1993, a theory presented itself claiming the origin of Chetek comes from the Ojibway word Tchitchag which is part of their high or spiritual language and means soul. The lands now under water due to the higher water levels resulting from the dam were once sacred burial grounds for the native residents. The true origin of the name may forever be a mystery.

walleye (Sander vitreus)• Generally dawn and dusk are the feeding times for this light sensitive fish—they are a schooling fish, and like the perch, can be found within a few feet of the bottom near rock bars, drop offs and underwater points
• Feed primarily on minnows and other small fish, but will eat insects, leeches and worms• Average size limit in Chetek chain is 11 to 24 inches
northern pike (esox lucius)• Can be found in virtually all water depths throughout the year• Prefer shallow, cool water with extensive weeds/weed lines• As lake waters warm, they often seek cooler waters near inlets streams and springs• A voracious feeder that finds most fish and creatures—even ducks, squirrels and sandpipers are fair game—feed primarily on suckers, shiners, shad and fish 18 inches or under.
• Average size limit in Chetek chain is 24 to 32 inches

CHETEK RESORT OWNERS’ ASSOCIATION IS A PROUD SPONSOR OF CHETEK LAKES PROTECTION ASSOCIATION AND WALLEYES FOR CHETEK
The Chetek Lakes Protection Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to protect and enhance the Chetek Chain of Lakes. The CLPA has approximately 460 members who not only recognize the Chetek Chain of Lakes as a natural resource that greatly enhances our quality of life, but also the value the chain of lakes brings to tourism economies and local tax bases.
Membership consists of local residents, local businesses, non-residents, lakeshore owners and people from other states who vacation at our resorts that love the lakes. You don’t have to live on the lake to become a supporting member.
The CLPA works to protect the natural resource and preserve our privilege to fish, boat, hunt, swim, plus numerous winter sports, and enjoy the scenic beauty of our lakes.
SOMe Of OuR gOAlS ARe:• Preventing invasive species from entering and establishing themselves in our lake system• Pursue policy initiatives to reduce polluted runoff from urban and agricultural sources
We provide educational materials for shore-land owners on shoreline management and the impact it can have on water quality and lake health on our beautiful lakes. We continue to craft lake policies that fit our lakes needs such as installing fish habitat structures, winter aeration and shoreline restoration practices. We have members who are part of the Citizens Lake Monitoring Network (CLMN) who monitor water clarity on a weekly basis and submit the results to the DNR to assist in their assessment of the health of a lake. We are currently pursuing a state grant through the Wisconsin DNR to fund a study to track down the causes of high nutrient levels in the chain of lakes. The study is necessary before we can receive funding to address the problem. It will include intensive water testing of the streams entering the lakes and an analysis of the bottom sediments of the lakes.
We are the voice for the Chetek Chain of Lakes—please join us! Send an email or visit our website for more information: [email protected] • www.cheteklakespa.org
2013 marked our 11th year of annual stock of extended growth walleyes in the Chetek chain of lakes. Population of legal size walleyes is getting better but not good enough. During the year we stocked approximately 6,000 more walleyes—bringing the 11-year total to 61,000, at a cost of $110,000.
Thanks to everyone who supports our effort, especially the Chetek Resort Owners Association, Fish-O-Rama, the CLPA (Chetek Lakes Protection Association) and everyone who purchased a Walleye for Chetek raffle ticket.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources kicked off a 2-year Wisconsin Walleye Initiative program to stock 400,000 extended growth walleye in northern Wisconsin. The Chetek Chain received approximately 38,000 walleyes in the fall of 2013 as part of this effort. There are preliminary plans to make this an annual project. Go to “dnr.wi.gov and search “walleye” for more details.
Thank you to everyone that supports this effort.

The Chetek Southworth Municipal Airport is located one mile east of downtown Chetek on Lakeview Drive. The land for the airport was originally donated by Fred Southworth, a prominent businessman in Chetek’s earlier days, and was dedicated back in 1939.
Some of the more recent improvements to the public airport include upgrading the fueling system to allow pilots to obtain fuel 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a major credit card (September 2009); rebuilding the entire runway , as well as a new ramp and turnaround and installing a new runway lighting system. In conjunction with these last three upgrades, which were completed back in 2000-’01, was a new terminal building, built with 100% donated labor (except electrical and plumbing work), as well as mostly donated materials. Members of the airport committee at the time of the construction of the building named the structure the Beuthling Terminal, in honor of the late Irv Beuthling, a longtime Chetek pilot, airport manager and Chetek mayor. Beuthling was also one of three Chetek pilots ( along with Dr. David Pierpont and Dr. Fred Bannister) who collectively purchased 40 acres of additional land near the existing airport and donated it to the city for airport use. A small pictorial history display about the airport can be found on one of the walls in the lobby area of the terminal.
The seventh annual Airplane Fly-in and Boat Show benefit for Chetek charities is to be held Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014. The charity is put on by Chuck Harrison and John Banks and is attended by many.

bIke ROuteSThere are 31.6 miles of marked bike routes available in the Chetek area along the west and east sides of Prairie Lake, along the west side of Pokegama Lake and through the City of Chetek and around the “Island” of Chetek. The routes are marked with a bike symbol and arrows painted on the road. A map of the routes is available at www.chetek.net or from one of the local tourist centers.
All-teRRAIn vehICleSThe Chetek ATV Cruzers, an all terrain vehicle club and its many volunteer members, completed putting the finishing touches on a beautiful trail called the Dallas Trail. This was made possible by some very generous, private landowners (who allow us to cross on their land) and the Barron County recreational officer who goes above and beyond for the ATV clubs of Barron County.
The Dallas Trail is said to be one of the nicest trails to ride by other Barron County ATV clubs. You can go from Chetek to Dallas for a nice, short ride for lunch and back. For a longer ride you can make the circle from Chetek to Dallas, Dallas to Barron, Barron to Cameron and Cameron back to Chetek. You also could go west of Barron on the Cattail State Trail to the county’s 40-acre intensive use area called “the playground”, where there is riding for all ages. Many of the supporting businesses and resorts are located along the trail system (see the Chamber of Commerce Members list on pages 12 & 13 for a complete list of businesses accessible by ATV trail). There are trail-heads at the Chetek Lanes Event Center & Pizzeria and in the Chetek Industrial Park behind Parker Hannifin, where you can unload your machines and park a truck and trailer. Many streets and roads in the city of Chetek are well signed and open to ATV traffic by which you get to the trails.
The club is currently working on a trail south of Chetek to Rusk County, which connects with more trails, and north from Cameron to Rusk County.
New members are always welcome • Visit www.chetekatvcruzers.org for more information
SnOwMObIlIngBarron County has over 250 miles of groomed and well-marked snowmobile trails. The trail-head of the Tuscobia State Trail, a 76-mile abandoned railroad bed, begins just north of Rice Lake and ends in Park Falls. The newest “Rails to Trails” is the Wild Rivers Trail which also begins in Rice Lake and covers 97 miles, going north to Superior.
For the latest information on trail status, please contact David Moin by phone at 715-637-4275 or via email at: [email protected].
The local snowmobile club is the Chetek Snow Flyers. To obtain more information about this organization and/or membership in the club, please contact President Mike Schmidt at 715-829-8925 or via email at: [email protected].
Lodging in the Chetek area is available during the winter by contacting the Chetek Resort Owners Association. Visit their website, www.chetek.net, and click on Info Request Form to inquire with the members that have availability.
the Chetek CROSS COuntRy SkI, SnOwShOe, hIkIng & RunnIng tRAIl The cross country ski/snowshoe/hiking/running trail begins behind the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser High School/Middle School building on the west edge of town off of Knapp Street. There is ample parking at the start of the route. The trail begins adjacent to the maintenance shed located next to the baseball field. The cross country ski/snowshoe trail loops out onto Bailey Lake.
If you’re interested in the hiking/running trail, follow the school loop that is located behind the school. This trail is used by the cross country running team when school is in session.
The cross country ski/snowshoe trail is a project of the Chetek Chamber of Commerce. Donations are accepted for snowmobile gas/maintenance. Grooming is done annually on a volunteer basis.

the Chetek ReSORt OwneRS ASSOCIAtIOn IS PROUD TO CONTINUE OUR CAbInS fOR CupbOARDS PROGRAM.
We are going to be collecting a variety of items for the Chetek AReA fOOD Shelf. Many cabin guests leave behind canned goods and other non-perishable food items. We want to not only gather what is already left behind but ask cabin guests to donate their unused items. The Food Shelf can accept canned, boxed and unopened food items. We can also help by collecting paper products such as toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, plastic and paper plates, foil and other such items. We also are looking for help with soap, dish soap and shampoo items that are often too costly for some families. With the help of our summer guests, we are hoping to have a big impact on the availability of goods during the summer months when giving seems to be at its lowest level. If you have a seasonal home, you can donate items to any local resort and they will be donated to the Food Shelf. Please help us assist local families who need some help.
