This capital city is 327 years old and was rechristened as Chennai from Madras in 1996. Also known as the cultural capital of Southern India, it is the fourth largest city in India.

The majority of the population in Chennai are Tamilians followed byTelugus (Andhra Pradesh), Marwaris (Rajasthan), Oriyas (Orissa), Malayalis (Kerala), Anglo Indians, Punjabis (Punjab) and Bengalis (Bengal).

With a local population of 4.6 million, Chennai is also a favoured destination for expatriates and has a large demographic of Korean, Japanese, French and American nationals.

Chennai is one of the fastest growing cities in the world, estimated to grow to a $100 billion economy, 2.5 times its present size, by the year 2025.

The city produces everything from battle tanks to bicycles and is considered as one of the hubs of global auto production with major vehicle producers like Ford, Hyundai, Caterpillar, Mitsubishi, BMW, Nissan and Renault and the home-grown Ashok Leyland and Enfield Motors.
