Lab Safety

Expectations for Behavior

NO Horseplay in the lab Wear P.P.E. at all times in the lab Follow written procedures without

deviation Do not eat, drink, or inhale chemicals Keep lab space clean and tidy In case of emergency or accident,

notify instructor immediately

Expectations for Dress

Wear long sleeve shirt (at least to elbow) Wear long pants If you have long hair, it should be tied back Wear close toed shoes Wear goggles at all times

– Even those who wear glasses must too wear goggles as glasses provide no splash protection.

– Contact lenses are okay to wear, but notify instructor that you wear them.

Personal Protective Equipment

Goggles (Always required)– You may get your own from any home

improvement store, but make sure they provide splash protection around whole eye.

Nitrile gloves (provided when needed) Lab aprons (available)

– Lab coats can be purchased from collegiate bookstores for little money.

Split large groups in half– You can run 2 trials side by side, saving time– Everyone gets a better opportunity to participate

Know the procedures ahead of time– If you know what to expect, there is less chance

something will go wrong Be familiar with chemicals to be used and their

hazards– No matter how safe we are, accidents can still

happen. It is imperative that everyone knows how to deal with potential emergency situations.

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

Can be found by searching the internet

Will be researched ahead of time

Speak to reactivity Speak to potential

hazards Speak to disposal


Contain basic information about the chemical and properties– Name– Formula Mass– Empirical Formula– Physical Properties

• melting point• conductivity• solubility• etc.


Take the MSDS you were given and determine the following for your chemical as a group:

• Chemical Name

• Formula Mass

• Empirical Formula

• Melting and boiling points

• Density


Contains Hazard Information– Possible Routes of Entry

• Inhalation• Ingestion• Skin Contact• Eye Contact

– First Aid• Has specific first aid for each route of entry

that applies


Take the MSDS you were given and determine the possible hazards of the chemical and determine the appropriate first aid procedures to deal with each type of exposure.


Also contains reactivity and disposal information.– Describes classes of chemicals that would

be very reactive to the substance– Explains thoroughly how chemical must be

disposed• Environmental repercussions of poor disposal• Cost of disposal


Take the MSDS you were given and determine if there are any types of chemicals that are reactive to the chemical and how it should be disposed.

Emergency Equipment

The lab is equipped to deal with several types of emergencies.

There are several pieces of emergency equipment whose locations should be known.– Fire Extinguisher– Safety Shower– Eye Wash– Fire Blanket– Telephone

Safety Shower

For use in the case when a hazardous chemical spills onto a person.

Remove clothing (adult present will be same gendered and others will be removed from area)

Stand in drenching shower for 15 minutes

Seek medical attention

Eye Wash

For use in the case when a foreign body or chemical gets into an eye.

Take covers off eye wash and press lever

Hold eyelids open and allow eye wash to rinse eyes for 15 minutes

Seek medical attention if irritation continues or MSDS recommends it

Fire Blanket

For use in the case when part of or a whole person has caught on fire.

Remove blanket from red pouch and cover person(s) affected to smother the flames.

Seek medical attention.
