WHAT IS CHEMISTRY?
Chemistry- Is the study of matter and its changes.
MatterIs anything that has mass and takes up space. Matter is all around you!
Molecule Is the smallest piece of an object, made up of two or more atoms that are held together by bonds.
AtomIs the smallest piece of matter on earth. Two or more atoms make a molecule
Table Salt
One grain of salt is made of BILLIONS of salt molecules.
If you cut one molecule of salt you would discover the it is made up of two kinds of atoms: SODIUM and CHLORINE.
If someone offered you SODIUM CHLORIDE you could safely use it on your French fries.
Review Chemistry is the study of
____________ and its ______________. Molecules are made up of
_____________. Matter has ______ and takes up
____________. Table salt is made up of two
different kinds of __________ called sodium and ___________.
3 Most Common Forms of MatterSolid, Liquid, and Gas (4th Plasma)
Solid Always keeps a definite shape and
takes up the same amount of space. The molecules move around but stay very close to each other, they wiggle or vibrate.
LiquidAlways take up the same amount of space, but they do not always keep the same shape. Molecules in a liquid roll and slide around. This is why the shape of liquids change. The molecules in a liquid move more freely over each other. This movement allows liquids to flow and be poured.
GasHas no shape of its own or definite amount of space. It fills up any space not filled by solids or liquids. The molecules in gases are very far apart. They move the fastest, bouncing off one another.
