• What is matter?• What is not matter?• What is pure substance?• What is element?• What is Compounds?• What is mixture? • Types of mixture (heterogeneous mixtures,

homogenous mixtures, mechanical mixture, suspension, emulsion)

• What is reversible change and non-reversible change?

• What is physical change and chemical change?

Matter Is anything that has VOLUME and MASS

VOLUME – Is the amount of space something takes up (put picture of volume)

MASS – Is the amount of matter (put picture of mass)

Page 4: Chemistry

Examples of matter

Page 5: Chemistry

Is fire considered matter? Yes, fire is matter. Fire takes up the

spaces and fire itself is mixture of vaporized fuel, oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and water vapor, etc. So, fire is matter.

Page 6: Chemistry

non-matter Is anything that doesn’t have volume and

mass

※shadow- Shadow doesn’t take up any place.

※ light-It doesn’t take up any space.

Page 7: Chemistry

Non-matter

※ heat- Heat isn't matter its just something you feel.

※ gravity- It is a force. It holds us on the surface of the earth, but we can't see it or feel it.

Page 8: Chemistry

Pure substance

A substance that contains only one kind of particle.

water salt

Page 9: Chemistry

Element

A pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substance.

beryllium lithium

boron gold

Compounds

A substance that is containing two or more elements.

nitrogen oxygen

Homogenous Mixture

The substance that we can’t see the difference.

milk saltwater

Heterogeneous Mixtures

The substance that we can see the difference.

Page 13: Chemistry

Suspension

A mixture that clumps of solid or liquid are scattered throughout.

soil fog

Page 14: Chemistry

Emulsion

A suspension that keeps the parts of the mixture from separating.

milk lotion

soap

Mechanical Mixture

A mixture. We can see two or more different parts inside the mixture.

sand concrete

Reversible Change

Changes that can be reversed

Page 17: Chemistry

Non-reversible change

Changes that cannot be reversed coffee
