This document outlines some o the general principles o item construction used by examdevelopers at Learner Assessment, contains the Chemistry 30 Program o Studiesoutcome statements, and includes numerous exemplars.
The ollowing document was prepared by committees o teachers rom variousjurisdictions. The teachers developed questions and identifed questions rom past
diploma examinations relating to each curricular concept. The purpose o this documentis threeold:
To provide exemplars that indicate how a particular conceptcould be assessed
To help item writers produce relevant and varied questions
To have an efcient and consistent means for classicationo items, not only in terms o content, but also in terms oskills, STS connections, expectations, and cognitive levels
Teachers using this document or item writing and feld-test development shouldunderstand that it is open-ended. I necessary, it can be supplemented or revised as eachcommittee uses it. Teachers should not eel limited to what is in this document, as it is tobe used only as a general guideline during item writing and feld-test development.

Ensure that all items ft within the program o studies and that the concept hasbeen correctly categorized (or knowledge, skill, and STS components).
Balance items in terms o difculty and quantitative versus qualitative type.
Balance items to reect the program o studies. I there is duplication o aconcept, ensure that the items are addressing dierent aspects o the concept.
Check that the current data booklet values are used and that the science is accurate.
Include only plausible distractors. I the distractors are a result o a calculation,
include how each distractor is calculated.Linked items must be linked rom a multiple-choice item to a numerical-responseitem. All linked items must be identifed so that students who complete the frstitem incorrectly in a series o linked items still have a chance o completing the nextitem correctly.
All numerical-response answers must fll all our felds in the numerical-responsesection on the answer sheet (possible types o responses are 1245, 45.2, and 2.38).
I possible, do not start or end calculated numerical-response items with a zero.
Indicate the correct response or each machine-scored item and provide ascoring guide with a sample response or each written-response item.
Secondary Components to Check
Diagrams are clearly drawn and labelled. Provide a reerence or the source, ione was used.
Distractors are approximately equal in length.
Scenarios are relevant (trim out extra inormation) and include any sources used.
Scenarios consist o a minimum o three items.
How to Start
Develop a blueprint or the feld test that covers as much o the program o studies aspossible and includes a range o cognitive levels. Start by fnding the written-responsecomponent. The written-response question determines the other questions that canbe put on the feld test so that concepts are not covered more than once. Next, lookor two to three scenarios to ft your blueprint. Group and order your items/scenariosaccording to units as ollows: thermochemical changes, electrochemical changes, chemical changes o organic compounds, and chemical equilibrium ocusing onacidbase systems. Scenarios that include inormation rom more than one unitshould appear at the end o the units they cover. Fill in any remaining spots withindividual items or add items to the existing scenarios.
