2000 bismuth, Bi bismuth, Bi I 5400 21 - 023 A Naked Diatomic Molecule of Bismuth, [Bi 2 ] 2- , with a Short Bi–Bi Bond: Synthesis and Structure. Single crystals of (II) are obtained by a diffusion process in an ethylenediamine solution layered with toluene. The compound crystallizes in the rhombohedral space group R 3 with Z = 3. The structure contains isolated Bi 2 2- anions with a Bi–Bi bond distance of 2.838 ˚ A. Each Bi 2 2- unit is surrounded by eight [K + (crypt)] cations. Additionally, two other phases, [K + (crypt)] 2 InBi 3 and [K + (crypt)] 6 (In 4 Bi 5 ) 2 , cocrystallize with (III).
