Trays of all Types and SizesNorton Chemical ProcessProducts Corporation offers acomplete line of fractionationtrays to complement our widerange of mass transfer and heattransfer products.

In addition to standard valve, sieve and bubble cap trays, wedesign and fabricate many othertypes of trays such as dual-flow,baffle, grid and cartridge trays. We have supplied and designedlarge multipass trays up to 38' 6"(11.74 m) in diameter and car-tridge units only inches in diame-ter. Our high-quality manufactur-ing standards, equipment andpersonnel make us especiallyskilled at working with exotic met-als such as titanium and zirconi-um, providing many nonstandardtray types and working withheavy-gauge material.

Recognized internationallyas a leader in distillation andabsorption equipment, Nortonapplies advanced technology anddecades of experience to answeryour most challenging questionsin engineering, construction andefficient operation of distillationfacilities. We are a leadingdesigner and manufacturer ofrandom and structured towerpackings (metal, ceramic, andplastic), and their associatedtower internals.

Norton has successfullydesigned and produced Hydronylfractionation trays for over 25years in Europe. In the 1980s, weexpanded our tray technologyand capabilities globally byacquiring the resources andexpertise to produce Wyatt andGLF fractionation trays. Thesetechnologies and products have aproven track record in masstransfer service throughout theworld.

Hardware/deck constructionIn addition to the hardware illus-trated here, which includes thestandard top and bottom accessmanway clamp, we offer a com-plete range of Wyatt andHydronyl replacement hardwarefor the large number of these traycolumns that are still in operation.

A variety of joint construc-tion is also available including ourstandard through-bolted Lapdesign and a clamped joggle jointdesign.

Norton also supplies quickaccess manway hardware as anoption when requested.

Note: Items indicated in brackets [ ] aremetric standard hardware suppliedfrom our European operation. Exactappearance may vary from thatshown here.

Services thatSpan the Globe

ServicesNorton is committed to the philos-ophy that our customers pur-chase not only our products, butour services as well.

All of our products arebacked by decades of experienceand employees committed toquality, excellence and service.

Some of the services includ-ed with fractionation trays are:• Tray design procedures based

on numerous successfulinstallations and years ofexperience, plus membershipin technical organizationssuch as FRI and SRP.

• Computerized process, andmechanical design and fabri-cation to permit rapid andaccurate processing of orders.

• Liquid and vapor distributiontechnology to optimize towerseparations.

• Simulation and modelingexperience to aid in verifyingprocess designs.

Research facilities forpilot testing.A valve tray design manualand associated PC programto aid in the evaluation ofNorton valve tray designs.Expertise in fabrication andwelding of exotic metals andheavy-gauge materials.State-of-the-art manufacturingequipment to maintain tighttolerances, produce cus-tomized designs and improvematerial handling.A full range of installationservices from complete towermodification to supervisionby a highly skilled fieldrepresentative.A dedicated and experiencedtray design team to provideexpert service, quality designsand supervision throughoutthe project.

Product OverviewBubble capsThe Norton standard bubble capis the Fractionation Research Inc.(FRI) plain cap. It is available in3" and 4" OD and custom sizesas well.

The FRI cap has a plainskirt; however, we also manufac-ture caps with various cap slotdesigns. Caps and risers can alsobe offered to our clients' specificrequirements.

Bubble cap trays are usedprimarily where large turndownratios are required. Their con-struction allows very low liquidrates to be handled with little orno leakage.

Due to their ability to operateat low vapor and liquid rates, bub-ble cap trays are used in a signifi-cant portion of fractionation trayinstallations.

ValvesNorton offers a wide selection ofvalves to meet customer require-ments. The recommended valvesfor most applications are the MR2Land the L valve, which have an"anti-pop" characteristic due to thetwist leg construction. Both valvesare manufactured with or withoutanti-stick tabs. The anti-stick tabsoffer reduced surface contact areawhich aids in keeping the valvefrom sticking to the deck whenclosed. All valves are produced indifferent gauges and thicknessesto meet mechanical and processrequirements.

Other options include:• Anti-spin orifice tabs to prevent

tray deck valve orifice andvalve leg erosion.

• Caged valves which are usedwith venturi-type deck openingsfor low pressure drop applica-tions, or with plain deck open-ings where nonlegged valvesare beneficial. They are alsoappropriate for low liquid loadapplications or in certain typesof corrosive environments.
