PREGNANCY AT WORKEmployers Duties

� On receiving notification that an employee is pregnant, the employer must carry out a risk assessment to ensure the employee is not exposed to anything harmful to her or the unborn child.

� If the assessment reveals a risk, the employer must:

� Provide suitable alternative work.

� Allow warm or chilled waste to reach ambient temperature to prevent vacuum or pressure occurring in a container.

� Secure lids tightly.

HANDLING OF WASTE CHEMICALS

� Ensure proper storage and prevent environment and health risk.

� Check drums for any possible damage such as leaks , Swelling , Indentations.

� Place solvent waste into 2001 drums only.

� Check MSDS for correct PPE.

� Remove obsolete labels and attach new labels.

� Fill drums with waste material it originally contained.

Damaged caused by incorrect handling of chemicals

� Example: Ethanol (Alcohol)

� Acute:Is the effect from short term exposure or single contact.

� Symptoms:Drunkenness,Inconsciousness.

� Chronic: Is the effect from long term exposure or repeated contact.

� Remove the casualty to fresh air(wear protective clothing and breathing apparatus if necessary).

� Restore or support breathing if necessary.

� Make the casualty comfortable by sitting or laying them down.

� Immediately flush with copius amounts of water including under the eyelids for at least 20 minutes.

� Ensure adequate flushing of the eyes by separating the eyelids with the fingers.

� Speed and thoroughness is important to prevent permanent eye injury.

FIRST AID : SKIN CONTACT

� Remove all contaminated clothing and shoes immediately, unless stuck to the skin.

� Drench the affected skin with running water for at least 15-20 minutes. Soap may be used depending on the chemical.

� Contact supervisor and medical personnel immediately. Discard contaminated clothing and shoes.

� Ensure of your personal hygiene.

� Health problems do not always occur immediately, they may take days , months or even years.

� Not all chemicals have an odour.
