Hazardous materials are any items or agents(biological, chemical, radiological, and/orphysical), which has the potential to causeharm to humans, animals, or the environment, either by itself or through interaction withother factors.
You can find chemicals everywhere and it isnecessary to have a basic knowledge of how torecognize chemicals and what should be done(or not done) about any spills and just basichandling.
WHATISAHAZARDOUSMATERIAL?
All activities involving chemicals must be donein a way that ensures compliance withapproved procedures that will protect companyemployees, the environment and thecommunity. However, each chemical hasdifferent safety measures that are required andusing the wrong method could create adangerous impact. The best way to ensure asafe workplace is to educate personnel at alllevels of the business. Consistent training ofestablished chemical safety protocols is thefoundation of a effective safety trainingprogram.
The most important responsibility of anycompany managing chemicals is compliancetraining. Not only does this training adhere tolegal responsibility but also will impactoperational efficiency. The complexity oftracking and administering compliance trainingcan be overwhelming due to all the regulationsand varying timeframes required.

OSHA’S HCS (Hazard Communication Standard) system provides a common and coherentapproach to classifying and communicating hazard information. The HCS has twoclassifications that they use in defining hazardous materials.
Health Hazards – present dangers to human health (breathing, vision)FIRE HAZARDS: Combustible liquid | Flammable liquid | Flammable aerosol |Flammable gas | Flammable solid | Oxidizer | PyrophoricREACTIVE HAZARDS: Organic peroxide | Unstable (reactive) | Water-reactiveEXPLOSIVE HAZARDS: Explosives | Compressed Gas
Physical Hazards – cause damage to the body (i.e. skin corrosion)SYSTEMIC EFFECTS: Carcinogen | Toxic agent | Highly toxic agent | Corrosive |Irritant | SensitizerTARGET ORGAN EFFECTS: Hepatotoxin | Nephrotoxin | Neurotoxin |Blood/hematopoietic toxin | Respiratory toxin | Reproductive toxin | Cutaneoushazard | Eye hazard
The HCS system is now aligned with GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classificationand Labeling of Chemicals). The reduction of trade barriers will help American companiesand result in productivity improvements and cost savings in documentation and tracking.
The new GHS was developed by the UnitedNations for international standardization ofhazard classification and communication. GHSimpacts the preparation of labeling and SDS ofchemical manufacturers, importers anddistributors to communicate their hazardousproducts into class and category. Within a hazardclass, there can be several hazard categories. The GHS has both Health and Physical hazardclassifications but also includes a thirdclassification for Environmental hazards.

Yes. Pacific Coast Warehouse Company is certifiedto handle hazardous materials. The certificationprocess is robust with audits and requirementsfrom a variety of governmental agencies includingEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA), the DrugEnforcement Administration (DEA), OccupationalSafety (OSHA), Department of Homeland Security, plus local fire departments. The complianceassociated to storing hazardous materials is strictand rigid.
Chemical distribution is a complex supply chainwhere safety is paramount. Each state and regionhas different rules regarding chemical transport.Outsourcing is the best way to gain efficiencies, expertise and infrastructure.
Since PCWC works with a variety of chemicalcompanies and a wide range of hazardousmaterials, it is important to stay attuned to theindustry and best practices that are being used. Asa member of National Association of ChemicalDistributors (NACD), Pacific Coast constantlyaccesses updated supply chain initiativesassociated to chemicals. As a member of NACD,PCW is involved in the Responsible Distributionprogram which outlines a set of safetymeasurements that are mandatory for allmembers.
