Chemical CalligraphyUsing the Dscript BioChem Notation it is easy to turn organic chemicals into attractive calligraphyworks. Dscript BioChem Notation is a component of Dscript Notation ( http://dscript.org/note.pdf !
which is "uilt upon the Dscript #lpha"etical $D writing system ( http://dscript.org/dscript.pdf .
Dscript BioChem attempts to simplify the memori%ation of the large comple& molecules and structuresin organic chemistry.
'his method is NOT meant to replace standard notation.
'his is primarily meant as a mnemonic device andart form.
'o fully grasp the molecules and their properties you will still need to understand "ond strength! andvisuali%e the D molecule. )isuali%ation is "est done with computers and D rendering. *ere we focus
on the elements and their arrangement/connections.
*ydrogen is dropped entirely. +n a "iochemical environment hydrogens are "ounced around! traded andswapped so much that we will consider them ,like electrons-.
'his is not a replacement to standard studies! "ut a supplement. ith a proper understanding ofchemistry you should easily "e a"le to use this to memori%e the overall structure and then fill in theother details on top.
Element #1 Carbon
Car"on can "e drawn in $ possi"le forms.
#"ove you see a Ben%ene ring. 'here are actually many ways to draw this! here are ust a few. #ll ofthese read as ,0 car"ons in a ring-.
+n all of these e&les you will notice the intersection only has lines! not 1 (which is also valid.
+ find using only lines makes it easier to process and memori%e. 'he primary goal is to simplify.

Element #2 Oxygen
2&ygen is drawn as a circle
#"ove you see 3 possi"le forms of ethanol. #ll read e&actly the same as ,C 4 C 5 2- or ,2 4 C 5 C-
Below we have an e&le that uses a "en%ene ring and some o&ygen! as well as some more car"ons.
'hese are ust $ possi"le forms of acetylsalicylic acid! there are plenty more ways it could "e drawn.
Determining which is the "est mnemonic device is a personal issue! whatever works "est for you6
Element #3 Nitrogen
Nitrogen is drawn as a loop. hen a third connection is needed a line is e&tended out of the loop!
#"ove is a an e&le using a nitrogen with $ connections! and "elow an e&le of connections.

Element #4 Slfr
sulfur is drawn a curve! connected on either side with sharp angles.
#"ove we see an e&le with sulfur using one connection! and "elow using $ connections.
Element #! "hophor
7hosphorus is an intersection of $ lines with a third line making a triangle in one of the 1 8uadrants.
*ere is a simple e&le using all 1 connections.
Complex $ing
Comple& ring structures yield many possi"le ways of drawing them! and it can take some time todevise optimal methods of drawing them "ut there are elegant ways of drawing almost any structure.

Other Element
#"ove is a periodic ta"le of elements with a sym"ol for each elementhen other elements are needed they can "e drawn either....
9. cut off from the main structure! ust like normal notation puts their letters in empty space anddraws "ond lines.
$. encapsulated in a circle and connected to from the edge of the circle
2n the left you see the Chlorophyll amolecule
Notice the loopy shape in the center+t is cut off from the rest of the strucutre
+f you look at the ta"le of elements a"ove you willnotice this shape identifies magnesium
Bond lines "etween the nitrogrens surrounding itcould "e drawn as well! "ut for this e&le +decided they are rather o"vious and can "e left out
'o use the ecapsulation method the sym"ol formagnesium would simply "e placed inside a circleand the circles perimiter used for connections.(ust like o&ygen! e&cept with something drawninside the circle

*ere are some e&les of the encapsulation method
'he sym"ol for ;g(magnesium can "e simply encapsulated with a circle
2r you can try to conserve pen strokes "y first drawing the circle then continue inwards with the ;g
2r you can "e creative and first draw the ; then continue into the circle and add the < curl aftercoming all the way around. (+t looks correct even though the stroke order was changed
2r you can "e creative with the sym"ol itself! in this e&le we reverse the ,< curl- to the left side.=ou must "e very careful when altering the sym"ols to ensure it does not "ecome am"iguous with otherelements.
*ere is >e with the circle drawn fluidly after the element sym"ol
'his is how the circle is added fluidly
*ere is yet another way of drawing >e! "ut this time drawing the circle out of the ,>-

*ere is ? in $ "asic forms
'his is Na! it can "e drawn without lifting the pen at all
'his is Ca in a few of its possi"le forms
'he system is designed for fle&i"ility and creativity. But am"iguity is not accepta"le! so "e careful @
Calligraphy Example*ere are a few e&les of what the calligraphy can look like.
Aemem"er! each is ust an e&le of 9 of the many possi"le ways a molecule could "e representedwith this system.
>or the vitamins one form of each was chosen (many vitamins are actually groupings of many differentmolecules that all share a single function or purpose
