2
Ions With Noble Gas Configuration
Know the charges of these ions.

3
Ions With Noble Gas Configuration
Know the charges of these ions.
![Page 4: Chem 6a Slide set 14](https://reader034.fdocuments.in/reader034/viewer/2022050808/55cf99f8550346d0339ff013/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
4
Ions of transition elements
Electrons with the highest n value are removed first.
E.g.:V: [Ar] 4s2 3d3 V2+: [Ar] 3d3
So the electrons that were first-in (4s2) are first-out when the ion is formed.

5
Electron pairing and magnetic properties
Paramagnetic: unpaired electron(s); attracted by a magnetic field
Diamagnetic: all electrons paired; very slightly repelled by magnetic field
Paramagnetic MnSO4·H2O is drawn between the poles of a magnet

7
The Inert Pair Effect
Metals in Groups 13, 14, & 15 may show the inert-pair effect:
outer s electrons are especially stable, not necessarily lost when a cation forms.
