Parent Opinion Survey Reminder

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. Please contact the school office if you would like more information.

School Production

The Year 6’s are already putting in lots of time to practise their speaking parts with Mrs Digby in preparation for the school production later this term.

A special thank you to Mrs Digby who gives up so much of her valuable lunchtime so the children can perform to the best of their ability. Each class will be learning their dances for the production later in the term.

Special Welcome to Country

We had a visit from Jaeden representing the Boonwurrung people as well as Jade and Merinda during yesterday’s entertaining assembly. Jade and Merinda will be helping the students paint an indigenous wall mural at the entrance way to the school. Jaeden performed an official welcome to country complete with a smoke ceremony as a blessing to be able to go ahead with the project as well as showing how we connect to this land. Jaeden also presented a plaque to the school which reads “We are proud to acknowledge the Boonwurrung as the first people of this land in which we live, love and play.” This will be displayed alongside the mural. The children learned some key words and concepts from the Boonwurrung language from Jaeden and got to make a wish through the ceremonial ‘coolamon’ as they left the assembly area. The children will not only learn more about Koori culture and ways but it will also aesthetically lift the front of the school. We can’t wait to see what they come up with. A big thank you to Ms Reid who has organised for the project to go ahead - it will look fantastic at the front of the main building.

Year 5 Sovereign Hill Excursion

The Year 5 students and teachers journeyed to Sovereign Hill last Friday as part of their Australian History/Gold unit. They had a great time and were lucky with the weather. They gold panned and they learned about what life was like when gold was first discovered. They also learned about Chinese immigration and mining. The children were very well behaved on the day. The bus trip home was loud and enjoyable with buses arriving back at school at around 7pm. Thank you to Ms Doutch, Ms Bull and accompanying parents for their supervision during the excursion.

Pick Up/ Drop Off Reminder

A reminder to parents that the children are not to be called across the road from your cars. This is an extremely dangerous practice which could see a fatal accident occur. Please hop out of cars and walk your children across the road using the school crossings so your kids are safe and you are modelling the behaviour we want to see for your children.

Annual data collection for students with a disability

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability is an annual collection of data. It takes place in all in government, Catholic and Independent schools across Australia in August of each year. It counts the number of school students receiving adjustments because of disability. The aim of the data collection is to make sure that students with a disability have access to the same quality education as the others in their class, in schools right across Australia. Students included in the data count -

meet the definition of disability under the

Disability Discrimination Act 1992, and

currently receive an adjustment for their

disability.

Some students who meet the definition of disability under the DDA may not receive an adjustment. However, if they have their needs met through a differentiated learning program, they will continue to work at their appropriate level. While every school will collect data, no information that will identify the student, such as their name, will be collected by the school. The information given to the Australian Government will not identify individual students. Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all children and their families is essential and is a focus of the national data collection. The national data collection provides better information about school students with disability to help parents, carers, teachers, principals, education authorities and governments to support these students to participate in schooling on the same basis as other students. Additional information about the national data collection, including resources for parents and carers, is available on the Australian Government Department of Education and Training website. See Data on school students with disability.

Enrol Now for 2020

We are open for 2020 enrolments and forms can be collected at the Office. If you have a child turning 5 by April 30, 2020, please complete an enrolment form and bring in a copy of your child’s birth certificate and immunisation record and we will process the enrolment immediately. It helps us enormously with planning, if we have a clear indication of enrolments as early as possible.

School Uniform Reminder

Parents - uniform policy for footwear: Black shoes or sports shoes with closed toe and flat heels (slippers and ugg boots inappropriate.) We appreciate that

3

there are times when students are out of uniform for legitimate reasons and these will be accepted via a note from home. However, a prompt response to this reason should see students return to full school uniform as soon as possible.

Children Arriving Early

Parents are reminded that children should not be arriving at school before 8.30 am in the morning. The students are not supervised at this time of the morning as teachers are preparing their classrooms for the day. Before and After Care facilities are available for parents who have to go to work early. Students should not be inside the buildings before the first bell unless supervised by a teacher.

School Supervision

Children are supervised between the hours of 8:45am and 3:30pm.

CEPS KIDS ARE FRIENDLY KIDS

This term we are working on CO-OPERATION

and next week we are looking at

Saying ‘NO’

Sometimes it is really hard to say ‘No’ to your friends. Friends can pressure you to do things that you don’t really want to do, or are against the rules, or dangerous.

When you are saying “No” remember to:

Look in their eyes. Tell them you don’t want to do it.

Briefly say why (eg. “No, I want to do something else after school.” If it is a mean thing or against the rules or dangerous, point out the

consequences (eg. “No, it’s too risky,” or “No that’s mean.” Sometimes you may want to thank them for including you (eg. “Thanks

anyway.”) Keep your tone of voice and expression friendly and calm.

REMEMBER Cool people say “NO” if they don’t want to do it

THANK YOU!

Thank you to all the families who supported our school by collecting Woolworths Earn and Learn points. We managed

to collect a total of 35,786 points which is a great achievement.

This week we placed our order for some great new sports equipment that can be used outside during recess and lunch

breaks. This equipment will arrive throughout term 4.

Thank you for your support!

Principals' Day, initiated by the Victorian Principals Association (VPA) over 18 years ago, is an ongoing opportunity to recognise the valuable

work performed by the Principal Class in Victorian Government Schools.

The leadership of Principals and Assistant Principals is essential to

making our Victorian schools vibrant and stimulating places of learning. School communities are encouraged to support this annual day and

commend the tireless efforts of their Principal Class Members.

Principals Day will be held on Friday 2 August 2019.
