This summer marked 10 years sinceRoman Abramovich became ownerof Chelsea Football Club and, to markthe anniversary, this programmefeatures a special wrap marking keymoments of the last decade alongwith a message to the fans.

Mr Abramovich arrived at the clubon 1 July 2003 and has brought anunprecedented level of achievement

to StamfordBridge. At thattime, the Blueshad not won thetop-flight leaguetitle for almost50 years, but wewere holding thetrophy aloft at theend of his secondseason.

That was thefirst of 11 top-

notch trophiesthat have arrivedat Chelsea in the opening 10 yearsof Mr Abramovichs ownership, including our first back-to-backleague titles, first domestic Doubleand first Champions League triumph.

Chelsea Chairman Bruce Buck said:If it wasnt for all the help that MrAbramovich has given us, then surelywe wouldnt be here now celebratingsuch a wonderful 10 years.

In 2003, he was a football fan

who had seen some football and

got enamoured with the game.Since then, and very quickly, hehas become an honest to goodnessfootball expert. He has spent a lotof time watching players, watchinggames, talking to experts, and hereally does know a lot.

Chief Executive Ron Gourlayadded: Mr Abramovich just wantshis football club to be successful,

for the club, forthe players and, importantly, forthe fans. Thatsbeen his plansince day one.

The successstarted, really, inthe first seasonand wevecontinued thaton in the last10 years.

    Of course,there has

been far more to Mr Abramovichstenure to date than just on-pitchsuccess. The last decade hasseen the club open our high-techCobham training complex and youthAcademy, launch our own charity the Chelsea Foundation andembrace the Blues heritage morethan ever before by introducing amore traditional badge and increasingthe involvement in the club of our

    former players.

kevinsnext stepter signing rom Genk in January 2012,Kevin De Bruyne has had a long wait or hiscompetitive Chelsea debut. However, ater animpressive pre-season in Asia and the United

States, the Belgian creative midfelder cannot wait to getstuck into his frst Premier League campaign.

Since he put pen to paper with the Blues, the 22-year-old has continued to develop during two highly promisingloan spells, frstly with his ormer club in his homelandand then with German side Werder Bremen last season. He believes he is improving all the time and that he ismore than ready or the next step in his career.

I signed a long time ago and so my frst competitive

game or the club will be a really nice moment, he saysas pre-season prepares to give way to the hustle andbustle o the league campaign. Im just looking orwardto playing ootball in competition orm again ater thesummer.

Pre-season has been good. I had a little injury at thestart, which was a bit o a minus, but the rest has beenreally good or me. I think I am a dierent player to lastyear; I am still young and this pre-season I eel like I haveprogressed individually and the team collectively which I hope will go into the season.

As his team-mate and compatriotRomelu Lukaku rose to ick an aerial ball towards theedge o the area, De Bruyne accelerated past his markerand muscled his way between two deenders beoreputting his bootlaces straight through the middle o theball and watching the net ripple. His bravery came atthe cost o a knock, but by the time the team touched

down in Washington, DC, or the second part o theirpre-season preparation, he was ready or action again.

It was in North America where his subtle touches, quick thinking and Beckham-esque crossing were inevidence. He explains he has been helped fnding his eeton the pitch by the way he and his ellow new boys havebeen welcomed into the old.

I eel I have settled in good, he adds, but Im nota person who makes a lot o noise. I am more the easy-going one and I think it is a good group with a lot opeople who make more noise than me!

Among the more boisterous o his team-mates are hisellow Belgians, Eden Hazard and Lukaku. Although De

to have some ellow countrymen around as he looks tosettle in.

I have been playing ootball with Romelu since I was14 and Ive known Eden rom the youth national team

since we were 16, he explains. They were always topo their groups, so it was obvious they had somethingspecial to their game. Its always difcult to know orcertain, though I saw a lot o good players who dontplay ootball now or who play in the lower divisions. So,in ootball, you have to work hard and be lucky as well. Those guys always had a bright uture and now they areproving it.

The connection between Hazard and De Bruyne couldbe bad news or opponents trying to stop Chelsea romdragging their deenders all over the place between thelines o midfeld and attack. Alongside Juan Mata, Oscar,Victor Moses and Andre Schurrle, the Belgian pair orm

a rightening collection o quick-thinking schemers in the

Blues squad or the coming campaign and it should bequite the spectacle to see them working in tandem.

For the creative players who link midfeld and attack, some o the most telling movements happen in an

instant, a split second in which their body shape shitsand completely changes the complexion o the gamebeore you. It is during these moments that De Bruynescomposure ceases to be a mere personality trait andbecomes a weapon.

That inner calm and sel-confdence displayed itselthroughout his Bundesliga campaign with WerderBremen over the past year and was in evidence duringpre-season with Chelsea. It allows a player to see clearlywhere to place the ball, whether that be at the eet o anarriving team-mate or into the bottom corner o the goal.

Im always really relaxed, De Bruyne adds. Youalways need to perorm, so it wasnt just because I was

season.I was just busy helping the team by playing aswell as I could. Its always been one o my qualities, Ihave always been relaxed. Its just my personality and it ishow I have grown up in my game.

It certainly helped the 22-year-old as he notched up10 goals and nine assists or a struggling team who came14th in the German top ight last season. Finishing onlya handul o points clear o the relegated sides, Bremenwere grateul or his ability to produce the goods under

pressure and he was voted the Bundesliga Young Playero the Year on the leagues ofcial website. Now, theBelgian wants to bring that orm to the top end o thePremier League.

It is always nice when you play good and I couldntcomplain, on an individual level, about anything rom lastseason, he explains. I only wish that we had played alittle bit better as a team.

I always give my best it doesnt matter what thegame is. I always try to give my maximum and sometimesthat is better than other times. Overall, I learned a lot othings in Germany; I got better in every way and grew asa player. Now, I am really looking orward to starting this

One of our summer signings was a fellow goalkeeper,

    THE COMEBACK

I really recognised the significance, but in recent times ithas come to the fore.

In stark contrast to the beautiful sunshine which litup the Gunners iconic old stadium on a balmy Augustafternoon in 1984, a wet and windy Burnden Park playedhost to what was effectively a relegation play-off betweenChelsea and Bolton Wanderers in the penultimate week ofthe 1982/83 season. Anything less than a victory wouldsurely put paid to the clubs Second Division status with, perhaps, worse to follow.

In a clich-ridden preview of the game, the Daily Mirrorwrote of the clubs future hanging in the balance andof the trench warfare that awaited the moody Bluesin the North West. However, right there in black-and-

One of the most iconic images in the history of ChelseaFootball Club: Kerry Dixon, arms aloft in front of Blues

supporters, considerably outnumbering their Arsenalcounterparts, at Highburys Clock End.Fifteen months earlier, it would have been unthinkable.

Fifteen months earlier, there may not have been a footballclub to support. However, fifteen months earlier, CliveWalker scored a goal which is arguably the most importantin Chelseas history, a strike which allowed King Kerry toturn Highbury blue for one afternoon.

Its a goal that people have discussed with me a lotover the past decade. For a long period, maybe 15 yearsor more, no one ever mentioned it, said Walker, now aregular presence on Chelsea TV. At the time, I dont think

white, was a sentence no Chelsea supporter wanted toread: Rumours suggest the club will be finished if theygo down.

Having travelled up to the game on the Thursday, the players were joined three days later by a large Bluesfollowing of the 8,687 supporters at Burnden Park thatday, the majority were supporting John Neals boys.

As fortune would have it, the suspension of David

Speedie, initially seen as a huge blow due to the Scotstenacity, proved to be a blessing in disguise. His absenceled to Walker moving up front to partner Colin Lee and, with just 10 minutes remaining of a tense encounter, thebreakthrough came from the makeshift centre-forward.

It was one of those shots that, in that weather, wasjust about making good contact, he explains.Where theball hits the net is immaterial just make good contact anditll fly off your boot.

As many of you will know, or will discover over thecourse of this season, John Neal was one of the majorprotagonists of Chelseas promotion-winning campaignin 1983/84.

Having quietly established a reputation as a managerof some promise, working wonders on a shoestringbudget with both Wrexham and Middlesbrough, theDurham-born tactician headed to west London in May1981.

By the time he departed, Neal had won the adulationof the Blues fanbase after turning around the clubsfortunes, but it could have been a different storyaltogether had chairman Ken Bates taken the advice of

the supporters shortly before the crucial trip to BurndenPark to face Bolton Wanderers.

Following a 1-1 home draw with Rotherham atStamford Bridge, which left us third from bottom withjust three games remaining, fans staged a sit-in afterthe game. They chanted for Eddie McCreadie who hadcontroversially left the club six years earlier to returnas manager and carved NEAL OUT on the pitch.

I wish they would get off his back they aredestroying a fine man, Bates told the Daily Mirror.Every old boy has been mentioned [for the job], fromHarris, Webb, McCreadie, Greaves and Hutchinson. Imsurprised Vic Woodley hasnt got a mention.

Neals two years in the job up until then had been

distinctly underwhelming, but the chairman was notfor turning. Soon, he, and Chelsea Football Club, wereabout to reap the benefits.

some outstanding performances in a Chelsea shirt, butnone of them were more important than this one.

Having seen the transformation that has occurred overthe subsequent three decades, it was a very different kindof pressure that day. For example, being nervous aboutwinning a penalty shoot-out in a Champions Leaguefinal is a high-class problem compared to going to Boltonneeding a win to avoid dropping down to the third tier.

That result, combined with a nervous 0-0 draw on thefinal day against Middlesbrough We had a six-man

defence, recalls Walker kept the Blues in the SecondDivision, albeit with our lowest-ever league placing as wefinished 40th out of the 92 clubs in the Football League.

However, it paved the way for a rebuilding processthat would kick-off one of the most fondly rememberedseasons in the clubs history; with a side packed full ofplayers who are still revered in the stands to this today.

Come along, come along, come along and sing thissong; were the boys in Blue, Division Two we wont behere for long, sang the supporters. They werent wrong.

Find out why over the course of this season, as webring you the complete lowdown on the 1983/84campaign and Chelseas return to the elite of

relegated. I have to say, it was a real team performanceand it was helped by a tremendous following turning up inthe pouring rain, they were absolutely superb.

The feeling was more than mutual, as we discoveredfrom one supporter who had made the long trip up north.

We were forced to come frombehind to win 2-1. Is it alwaystough on opening day?Its easier for something like that tohappen at the start of the PremierLeague season, especially whenyou are playing at home and theopposition come here with nothingto lose.

They were just promoted, sothey were one of those teams withnothing to lose. We knew they wouldplay for their lives and that it was notgoing to be easy. In the end, its up

to you how you make things happenand we expect another difficult gametoday, but we want to start in apositive vein, with a victory.

How do you expect Hull toapproach todays game, havingjust been promoted back to thetop flight under the managementof Steve Bruce?I expect quite a tight match because, with the attacking threat we have,I dont think they will want to openthe game for us. However, I also

We met Hull City at StamfordBridge for our season opener in2009/10 and went on to win theDouble? Do you believe in goodomens?Well, I remember we had a difficultgame that day and we scored thewinner only two minutes from time.

They had a chance themselveswith about four minutes left to go2-1 up and they didnt take it. Then,Didier [Drogba] scored he wantedto chip it inside the far post, he hit itreally well and it went in.

    Promotion and emotion

    EAST STAND

This new grandstand replaced thefrst constructed at Stamord Bridge in1905 by Archibald Leitch. Beautiullydesigned by Darbourne & Darke, it wasbuilt in 1973. A marvel o engineering, theres little doubt it was ahead oits time and it is the only part o thecurrent stadium which survived the massrebuilding o the 1990s. However, itseventual expense and unctionality weremore questionable and caused fnancialstruggles which lasted or many years.Nevertheless, the East Stand remains as

impressive today as it always did.

To adapt the Chinese proverb, each single step at the start o the seasonleads to a journeys end. Sometimes the denouement is a deating one;occasionally it brings unrestrained delight. The latter was happily the casewhen Hull City made the trip to Stamord Bridge or the last game o the1976/77 season.

The baby boomer an culture was reaching its peak, dovetailing withthe snarl o punk rock. Even the Bay City Rollers, idols o pre-teen girls, had contributed: their silk scar merchandise, tied round wrists, wereadapted or use by the ootball an who might otherwise consider himseltoo tasty a geezer or such apparel.

At Chelsea, Shang-A-Lang was replaced on scarves by the name oRay Butch Wilkins, the teams young skipper and midfeld star. Red,white and green scarves mimicking the popular away kit colours were also

popular, as the main photo shows.Continuedonpage64

    FENCINGAlthough the clubs uture Chairman

Ken Bates wanted to introduce electricencing at the Bridge, frst attempts todeter pitch encroachments belonged tothe previous decade. The idea was toprevent rival clubs ans charging at eachother, although, as the photo shows, encing was powerless to preventcelebrations taking place on the pitch.Chelseas supporters had earned areputation or hooliganism, but someincidents resulted simply rom the over-exuberance o a large and youthul

    new anbase.

    SHED ENDStanding allowed large groups

o riends to congregate under thepartial roo and songs to be created.A walk up the Shed End steps wasloaded with anticipation. The ShedWall survives to this day, its top twometres showing where the terracinglevel once began. The South Standwas demolished in 1994, meaning,or some Chelsea supporters, a ocalpoint inside the Bridge was lost. Themantle has partially passed on tothe Matthew Harding Stand at the

    opposite end.

WEST STANDThe vast western terrace was

replaced in 1964/65 to provide morecomort or supporters and a higherseat yield or the club. Its camberedrows and roo also heightened theatmosphere more than the old openterrace. The stand was three-quartersseating and one-quarter concrete slabs, aectionately known as the Benches. The West Stand existed until it wasremoved and replaced at the turn othe millennium. Despite its ricketyappearance by its fnal days, it was a

    sad moment or many ans.

Chelsea TVs team of punditsgathered at the Bridge ahead of2013/14 to share their views on theseason ahead. The former Blues starswill be regular faces on a number ofshows across the campaign and theycant wait for the action to begin.

Pat NevinWe know how good Juan Mata is, Ilove watching him play, but I wouldsay Eden Hazard is the one I amlooking forward to seeing. I think heis one of the top 10 players on theplanet.

Graham StuartFirst and foremost, Id like to seethe Premier League title back here atStamford Bridge. Obviously, the boyswill want to do well in the ChampionsLeague, but lets focus on the breadand butter first.Frank SinclairI think there is really goodcompetition for places throughout

the squad. Its good to have MichaelEssien back, for example, addingmore depth to the midfield.

    Clive Walker

I think its important that we hit theground running and start quickly. We need to get the points in the bagearly because, whoever does that, particularly if its us, it will be difficultto catch them.Kerry DixonThey say the million dollar questionis who plays in attack. However, forme, the million dollar question is whoplays at the back.Tommy Langley

I think it will be a massive firstday of the season. The crowd willbe really up for it and, over thecourse of the season, I want toget our league title back fromManchester United.
