FOOTBALL AND/OR BASKETBALL SEASONS

MISSION

Promote and uphold school spirit, unity, and pride.

Represent the school and community to the highest degree. Set an example of good behavior and sportsmanship at all times (whether in uniform or not). Promote friendship with each other and with schools with whom we compete, perform and/or interact with. Promote the development of lifelong values and skills.

CHS CHEER PROGRAM RULES AND REGULATIONS Cheerleaders understand that teamwork and the maintenance of discipline is the key to the success of the spirit program. Cheerleaders are dedicated to promoting spirit, enthusiasm, and a positive winning attitude through example. Adherence to the Cheer Program Rules and Regulations is vital to achieve these goals. All members realize that the manner, in which they conduct themselves in or out of uniform, directly reflects on the entire team, squad, school, and community.

CANFIELD GRIDIRON CLUB

Canfield Cheerleading is part of the Gridiron Club. Even though Gridiron is specific to the football program, all cheerleaders (both football and basketball season) receive benefits (uniforms) from Gridiron. Certain Gridiron–related events must be attended by all squads (ie: football and basketball meet the team). Cheer parents are highly encouraged to attend Gridiron meetings and are expected to participate in year round events, such as working in the concession stands.

ELIGIBILITY/SQUADS

All cheerleading candidates and parents must sign a contract stating that they agree to and are aware of the amount of time, expense, expectations, commitment and responsibility required and expected. Please read the CHS Student Handbook for athletic eligibility as they take precedence.

*Freshmen squad(s): may consist students entering 9th grade *Junior Varsity squads: may consist of students entering the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade *Varsity spirit squad: may consist of students entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade Number on each squad is ultimately dependent on how many girls tryout and the scoring breakdown. All basketball squads (freshman, JV, or Varsity) are not to exceed 8 girls. Placement on either Football or Basketball is random and the only accommodation that will be taken into consideration is if the student plays another school affiliated sport. Band members will automatically be placed on basketball.

o JV Football – All home JV football games and home varsity football games o JV Basketball - All home and away JV boys basketball games o Varsity Football – All home and away varsity football games o Varsity Basketball - All home and away varsity boys basketball games o Freshman Football – All home freshman football games *depending on numbers, this o Freshman Basketball – All home freshman boys basketball games may/may not be the same squad

Each cheerleader will complete season specific duties that include but are not limited to the following:

PRACTICE Safety is our first priority. Never stunt or tumble without a coach present. Cheerleaders are responsible for a certain amount of their own safety and protection during practices, games, etc. Wraps, braces or tapes are to be worn when needed.

Summer practice schedules will be released after completion of try-outs. During the month of August, practices will be held Monday-Friday during the morning hours. In-season practices occur every Monday.

*If planning on taking family vacations, please try to schedule during the month of July as practices will NOT occur.

ATTENDANCE

Cheerleading is unlike other sports. We do not substitute members. Your presence is very important. Please notify the coach before any unavoidable absence or as soon as possible. Please note that it’s ultimately up to the coaching staff to determine if an event is excused or unexcused and if cheerleader will need to sit the next cheer event.

EXCUSED

Illness with doctor’s note, extreme emergencies

Preplanned school functions (ex: ACT/SAT) Approved family events (ex: funerals)

UNEXCUSED

Work or babysitting Family vacations without notice/approval Concerts, Sporting events, Cedar Point, etc. Competitive/All-Star Cheer practices/events

*Any unexcused absence results in sitting the next cheer event. *Attendance at a game or practice without proper shoes, clothes or uniform will be considered an absence. *As stated in the school handbook for Canfield High School Athletics, students must be present for at least four periods (2 blocks) to be eligible for practices and games scheduled for that day. *Missing +3 unexcused OR excused during the month of August results in failure to participate in Fair Show *3 unexcused absences will result in removal from squad.

Refer to Demerit System

as demerits also apply!

TARDINESS/LEAVING EARLY

Being late for any cheer-related event is considered unexcused, unless a coach is notified ahead of time and approval is granted. Please notify the coach if there is a major conflict in time. (1 hour before Varsity games, and a half hour before JV and freshman games)

o Less than 15 minutes late to practice/game/event = sit for quarter of game (this include being late during half time – “two minute” rule)

o 15 to 30 minutes late = sit full game o 30 to 60 minutes later = unexcused absence, sit out next 2 games o During games, the “2 minute” rule will be followed at half time. If late, refer to above rules.

In the event of lateness, suspension or injury, the cheerleader is still required to attend cheer event in full uniform – must sit with the coach, not with family/friends.

Having to leave early from any cheer-related event is considered unexcused, unless a coach is notified ahead of time and approval is granted. For example, if you need to leave practice a half hour early due to work, demerits can be applied. (This is NOT a good reason to ask to leave early!)

APPEARANCE/UNIFORMS All events that are in direct involvement with the cheer program will adhere to the following dress code, unless otherwise stated:

TEAM DINNERS/SENIOR DINNERS Team dinners are a tradition for both football and basketball. Team dinners are usually held during the season on Thursdays. It is required that JV and Varsity cheerleader attend team dinners specific to their season. Missing more than one team dinner can result in demerits. Senior dinners are another tradition that is specific to the football season. These are usually held during the season on Sundays. Attendance at senior dinners is not mandatory, but encouraged. Parents/guardians of football senior cheerleaders will be asked to host a senior dinner.

CONDUCT/EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

By being part of an athletic team, you are accepting the fact that your actions are more prominent than those not associated with such an activity. Because of this, exemplary behavior is mandatory at all times, anywhere in the community and at all school functions where you are recognized as a representative of CHS and the community. A demerit system will be implemented from day one (see attached).

Promote a positive image for the school and community—your peers, parents, teachers, and community members.

Proper appearance is required at all times, with clothing appropriate to the occasion. Cheerleaders can not wear or loan CHS cheerleading uniforms/outfits when attending non-cheerleading

activities (this includes pom poms/bows!).

Your attitude and ability to work with other different personalities must be exceptional. Disrespect to any member of the cheerleading staff will result in immediate dismissal from the squad, practice, season or game at the discretion of the cheerleading staff. Inappropriate behavior and defiance will NOT be tolerated.

While representing CHS, cheerleaders must not: Show unsportsmanlike conduct Show excessive public displays of affection (especially in uniform, at games, or in school) Use vulgar language Drink alcoholic beverages, use controlled substances/tobacco products

All official cheerleading decisions and activities will be made by the coaching staff. All coaches are to be given respect and cooperation by cheerleaders and parents at all times.

Any or all disputes will be addressed in private, not during public events.

SOCIAL MEDIA

As a representative of Canfield High School, Canfield Gridiron, and the community, you must remember that any information you post on social media is a direct reflection of yourself, your coaches, and your teammates. Any information that is posted that demonstrates foul language, vulgar or inappropriate behavior, or any other action that is against the CHS code of conduct will result in immediate disciplinary action. Think before you post. If you have an issue with anyone on the squad, be mature and address it with them, or with one of your coaches. Social media accounts will be monitored by coaches. AWARDS

You are expected to direct enthusiasm and develop loyalty to the student body in support of the school and team. This role makes you a strong influence in guiding student conduct at games, pep rallies, and other performances. We are the leaders of the school, the biggest fans in the place.
