For more information, visit www.tinyurl.com/lawdaycontest LAW DAY STUDENT CONTEST: The Constitution of the United States divides the federal government into three branches to ensure a central government in which no individual or group gains too much control. The national government is divided into three branches: legislative, executive and judicial. These three independent branches have actions they can take to ensure the other two branches are not misusing their power. In other words, each branch has powers that it can use to check and balance the operations and power of the other two branches. Student Activities: -Ask students to develop their own flow chart that illustrates the major points of the three-branch checks and balances system – ask students to make their flow chart visually appealing. They can use various art materials, newspaper, magazine or websites to make their work aesthetically pleasing. Students can submit their flow chart into the 2018 Law Day Student Contest as an art submission. -Ask students to locate an article in a newspaper, magazine or website that illustrates the concept of checks and balances and present their findings in essay form.
