A gentle reminder to all parents interested in school based before and after school care to complete a brief survey to help us determine the viability of running this program. The survey will only take approximately 3 minutes of your time and can be accessed online from: https://www.research.net/s/MundaringPrimarySchool Mr Paul Larkin (Principal) FROM THE PRINCIPAL . . . Hello parents and caregivers. I hope you all had a wonderful time with your children over the holiday break and the kids are ready and raring to go for Term 3. This is a very important term as it provides teachers with relatively uninterrupted time for their teaching and learning programs. The term isn’t all work though, with the EduDance program starting next week for PP to Yr 7. Term 2 wound up with a bang with the year 6 & 7 students from Room 14 presenting a simply stunning assembly. Their dream inspired theme saw the older students dazzling the audience with a selection of creative costumes, marvellous music and stunning choreography. SPORT NEWS Interschool Sport: MPS verses Gidgegannup On Friday 27 June Year 6 and 7 students from Mundaring Primary School played games of football, soccer and netball against teams from Gidgegannup Primary while some of our Year 5 students had a game of volleyball. Once again our teams tried to do their best in their games with our soccer and netball A teams having wins and the netball B team, Year 5 volleyball team and the football team losing their games.

We would like to thank the parents who were able to attend and support our teams . A special thank you goes to Mr Neil Cole for his assistance with umpiring at the soccer and Mrs Paula Hill for umpiring at the netball. This was our last winter sport fixture for 2014. Our next interschool activity will be the cross-country event to be held on Friday 22 August at the Mundaring Recreation Ground and Mundaring Golf Course. The four best boys and girls in Year 4 to 7 at our school cross-country will be representing our school at this event.

Jump Rope Now that the Jump Rope activity has been completed the sponsorship forms and money need to be returned to the school as soon as possible. Students who didn’t obtain sponsorship should also return their form. Where a large amount of money has been collected it would be appreciated if the money could be sent in as a cheque made out to the school. Payments can also be made online. We would like to finalise the money collection by the end of Week 4, August 15th.

After School Sport Mundaring Primary School has been successful in gaining funding for the Active After-school Communities Program for After School Sport sessions for the second semester of 2014.

We have received funding for two sessions per week to be run on a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon for seven weeks. Each session will start at 3.15 and conclude at 4.15 pm.

Mr Taylor will be taking T ball on Tuesdays commencing 5 August with the last session on Tuesday 16 September.

A Sports Commission coach (assisted by Mr Taylor) will be taking hockey sessions on Wednesdays starting 6 August and finishing on Wednesday 17 September.

We have funding for 28 students per session. All sessions are free and a healthy afternoon tea is provided in the undercover area prior to the commencement of the session. Registration forms will be available from the office from Monday for the T ball and hockey activities. Boys and girls from Years 1 to 7 are able to participate, however places will be allocated on the basis of the first 25 students for each sport with their completed forms handed to the office. Students may register for both the T ball and hockey sessions.

Cross-Country The school will be holding its cross-country event on Friday 8 August, weather permitting. The Year 1, 2, 3 and 4 children will run their event on the Friday during their sport time between 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm. The Year 5, 6 and 7 children will run their event in their sport time between 2.00 pm to 3.00 p.m. Race distances: Year 1 - 450 m (one and half laps of oval), Year 2 and 3 - 600m (two laps of oval), Year 4 and 5 - 1000m (two laps of the cross country track), Year 6 and 7 - 1500m (three laps of the cross country track) All children participating earn points for the Cross-country Shield and the first four place getters earn points towards the championship medallion for the Athletics Carnival.

ALLERGY AWARE No whole eggs or nut products at MPS please.

LITERACY TIP When helping your child to spell don’t forget how useful it is to do more than just write on paper. “Skywriting”, writing with the fingertip on a textured surface, clapping syllables, doing head shoulders, knees and toes with syllables, or using finger sticks with the left hand which correspond to the sounds in words while writing with the right, all use another pathway to the brain (the kinaesthetic pathway) which helps consolidate literacy learning. Finger sticks are particularly useful for counting the sounds in words, especially with children who tend to clump blends or cluster sounds like pl, st, mp and write only one sound. Some children will say a word like stump has only three sounds (st_u_mp) when in actuality it has five (s_ t_ u_ m_ p). In the pre-school years, putting a fence around each word with your fingers, counting words in sentences and finding the short and long words by counting the letters helps build word awareness when reading. It helps children to understand the building blocks of reading – sound and letters, words and sentences. For more information go to www.talktoliteracy.com.au and click on blog.

This term we are trialling a computer assisted learning program called Fast ForWord. This program works on developing and strengthening the neural pathways

associated with working memory, attention, sound recognition and many other skills related to learning across all Learning Areas but specifically with reading.

We have a trial group of twelve students who are giving up their own time to attend the sessions before school and have already started the process of familiarising themselves with each of the tasks they will soon have to do independently.

HISTORY COMPETITION This term we are introducing the new History component of the Australian Curriculum and to kick this off, we are conducting a History Competition for students. We have sourced a number of photographs from the Mundaring area dating back to over 100 years.

The competition requires students to order these mystery photos from oldest to newest, using their powers of investigation and observation. Photos are posted on the Library and Admin Block windows, and students will also be able to view these in class. Parents may like to have a crack at this too.

Winners from each block will be announced at next week’s assembly where prizes for the best History Detectives will be given out.
